Elle maintained a 4.0 GPA, scored a 179/180 on the LSAT, was already attending a Public Ivy university, was a well-known and well-liked member of a high profile sorority, and was the daughter of obviously wealthy parents who’d probably donate to whatever school she attended. Harvard should’ve been BEGGING Elle to enroll.

Me too! I watched Legally Blonde when I was in middle school (I'm that old, yes), and to this day as a 29-year-old woman who still fan-girls hard in the Barbie aisle and has to consciously not buy everything in pink, rewatching Legally Blonde is probably the one thing that reminds me that being feminine and girlie is not something to ever be ashamed of. Also, I don't care how old I get there will be a day I find an outfit to match with my dog (the cloud dress was also a shirt on Ruffus.)

Honestly same. The amount of painful mansplaining I have to go through is frustrating. People look at me and see the blonde and the boobs and the dresses and presume I need things explaining to me three times or more even when I’ve sorted out what people are asking at work. Legally blonde made me realise I’m more than happy with how I present myself. And if people want to explain things to me forever then I’m not the dumb one they are for not getting that I know what I’m doing.

I like this, because it's both him trying to uplift her, but also still making certain implications that Elle takes to heart. You're right in that he's saying she's too good for Harvard, as seen with the words "dull" and "boring," but he also adds "ugly," and one of the main conflicts of the movie is the idea that it's beauty OR brains. Elle knows she's beautiful and expresses that through fashion, but part of the implication, for her, is that she should JUST focus on her looks, and that she doesn't NEED to be "smart," as represented by the "ugly" Harvard girls who put more effort into their studies instead of their clothes and makeup.

I know this is an old comment but yeahh they might have thought something along the lines of what Vivian thought Elle was doing with Callahan... I also want to add that she majored in something related to fashion and mostly took classes that weren't very academically challenging, so her counselor thought that she wasn't good enough of a student to get into Harvard. But Elle is clearly a clever, hardworking girl, and her knowledge about perms helped her in that case at the end, so the stuff on her college transcript was good for her all along! Just another layer of people underestimating Elle because of her traditionally feminine interests, and then her turning around and showing them that her love of fashion is one her strengths

@@nathaliem3423 So the video didn’t put down the conservative preppy look (she does views Cher, Gretchen, and even Elle’s intern looks very highly). It just the costuming for Vivian is not as polished as the average Ivy League WASP. Which I think is intentionally capturing Vivian’s unhappiness. She plays the part with the matching couples sets but it’s still playing a part, and these boxier looks are essentially a shell she’s trapped in (much like her future with Warren). Also because they’re extremely plain and muted, it forces your eye to immediately go towards her engagement ring. And in the beginning/early second act of the movie, she’s still viewed as the “antagonist” of the film so it’s visually reminding the audience that.

I told an ex that Legally Blonde is a really important film to me. I told them all about how the movie is feminist in a really bold and different way. Like you say, it presents girly girls in a positive way (the Take does a great job of showing how girly girls are often maligned in film and TV). It also shows that women can be strong and empowered even while being girly and traditionally feminine. This film was so important to me because I grew up with feminist ideals. My mom was a feminist and raised me to be one too. But the media I consumed so often showed feminist female characters as defying femininity, by taking on masculine hobbies (like you said) and wearing more masculine or androgynous clothes (like you said). This wasn't reflective of me who had a pink bedroom and a large collection of Barbies. I continuously was made to feel less than, both in the real world and by the media, for being so girly. Legally Blonde essentially said eff all that and embraced femininity. At no point in the film does Elle ever have to 'ditch her pink' or blonde locks. It was so important for me to see that, especially when I was entering college and wanted to be taken seriously. My ex proceeded to tell me that I can get that message 'in other films' and basically undermined the seriousness of the film. But isn't that ironic? The whole point of the film is that people don't take Elle seriously based on face-value, but that's true of this film as well. It's a silly rom-com from the early 2000s; it doesn't seem all that deep. And yet, it actually is a lot deeper and more challenging than many so-called serious films. Anyway, I just needed to vent about that.
@simpleton3781
@simpleton3781 4 жыл бұрын
I think what I love most is that it’s more feministic of a movie than a rom com. Like when I think about her relationship she has at the end is like a minor detail to me. Because the movie is more about her development in the face of prejudice and up holding “girly values” in the professional work place. And her romance isn’t a plot point more so like a nice addition for Elle ? You get what I’m saying ? I also agree that The Take does do a great job breaking down this movie’s feminine aspects in a consistent format

@[·Vintxge Vibez·] that's totally true. Same thing here. It was always so annoying how in media, women who wanted to seem as powerful and be taken seriously were always so dull and serious, and of course they had to have the statement "not like other girls" which just seems to attract men's attention. Elle is someone I relate to. And I love this movie so much. Many people don't see the messages behind it and just dismiss it because it's girly. And I've noticed if a chick flick is your favorite movie then you'd get laughed at.

Vivian is such a sad (in some ways!) and interesting character. Vivian grew up basically internalizing and taking notes on what the expectations of her will be if she wants to have this certain life and career she desires. She dresses a certain way at school because she assumes that if she follows certain rules, she'll get those achievements. It's interesting to watch her bitterness towards Elle because the first reaction is that "Elle doesn't deserve this, she didn't jump through all the hoops like I (Vivian) did, how dare she." To then coming to the realization that these "rules" are almost always just nonsense men put in place to control women.

i noticed that in the beginning, Elle wears a simple green cardigan, does her hair up, and wears glasses becoz she feels in order to assimilate into a Harvard student and their intelligence she has to dress like one. However, in the end during case, when she wears that pink dress w/ curls in her hair, she realizes she can exude intelligence through her attitude and can still retain her girly style.

One thing that I love about Paulette's story is how they don't just brush off her failed marriage. A lot of movies would play that up for laughs. "Ha ha, isn't it funny how this woman cries herself to sleep after being dumped? Let's watch her sob and eat ice cream again!" while other characters cringe and look uncomfortable around her. I love how Elle listens to Paulette and empathizes with her and even goes with her to get her dog back. She's exactly the friend you'd want during a breakup.

that is accurate, but it is a double sided coin as they imply that with their vast privledge and connections they could make the process far less difficult, or make it as easy for her to be placed in as it was for Warner himself. They could make calls or find the loopholes for her instead of the traditional more stressful way of applying, test-taking, be considered, etc. They even imply helping her bypass the process altogether, and if all else fails, encourage Elle to give up when adversity does become too daunting each just feel possible with how they address Elle and with how Elle reacts to their comments

I actually don’t think it’s because Vivian was unhappy with the job that she solely wore greys and blacks. I think it was meant to be a distinction between how the two women viewed professionalism. Vivian thinks color and feminine expression isn’t professional she wants to be taken seriously. Where Elle expresses herself and doesn’t hold that same view which is represented in the movie’s finale.

This perception of colour as "unprofessional" really does seem to be a current thing in some circles! My own epiphany about workplace fashion happened when I was working support staff for a big international accounting firm in the early 2010s, and I realised on walking into meetings (esp. in winter) that they literally looked like funerals!! 😂 So many arbitrary workplace fashion rules too, even for guys: no short sleeves & always ties 🙄 After that I firmly committed to always bringing colour to any office I was working in, & even incorporating flower hair-clips & costume jewellery to express myself, despite how out-of-the-norm it was for those environments... Wanted to remind people that's it's possible to be highly professional and still be an individual!

I remember being in the movie theater and watching it and looking around while others were cheering and I remember the overwhelming disgust I felt. I actually HATE Endgame and it took me awhile to vocalize how I felt and why I felt that way. The WHOLE movie fell flat on it's face. It was legitimately disgusting and nobody can ever change my mind on the fact Avengers Endgame was an AWFUL movie.

@mophead_xu
@mophead_xu 3 жыл бұрын
@@reikun86 if it was the woman with horns, i think it's because the sequence didn't put too much emphasis on the fact that it was women vs. woman (kinda sounds awful when i put it like that lol but you get what i mean). on the other hand, endgame was HELLA on the nose with the women ensemble. also, the context of that particular scene was built upon these women kinda protecting one boy (spiderman) after he got his ass handed to him, immediately. whereas in infinity war, their objective was to protect an unconscious and battle unfit man (ultron), and it "kinda just happen" this one female villain was being stopped by several female heroes. in endgame it came across as, "men ain't shit, women get the job done." in infinity war, it came across as, "oh shit, shuri's not done with ultron yet, we have to stop this woman." endgame came across as pandering; infinity war came across as just another battle scene. that's my interpretation, at least. infinity war came much closer to what a lot of people have been asking in their female empowerment movies: just make it good, there's no need to scream, "LOOK, STRONG WOMAN" every time a woman comes on screen. endgame was more like ... the typical """feminist""" moment in which they try to do a fan service but like most other fan services, it was surface level and really didn't address what people are asking for beyond, "LOOK, STRONG WOMEN."

Both Jackie and Marilyn were exceptional women, but where one was respected, the other was seen as stupid and taken advantage of by almost every person she meant. But Jackie was also a fashion icon and Marilyn by many accounts was intelligent and sensitive. I love that this movie gave the "Marilyn" character the chance to shine as a complex person with determination, intelligent, and sex appeal together.

The gaudy hat with sparkles on it could also mean that Vivian is starting to feel the competition between her and Elle. That scene it is featured in is the scene where we start to see Elle take law school more seriously (and winning the hypothetical case), and therefore, Vivian might be trying to compete with Elle subtly through fashion and try to catch up to her. Because the sparkles don't seem very much like a "preppy" thing to wear, it seems like something Elle would wear instead.

Love love love this! I've always adored this movie and I love the musical even more. My favorite thing about Elle is that she is kind. So often, pretty blondes who dress in pink are portrayed as mean.

I never once considered how threatened Vivian must have been by Elle. Thank you for pointing that out.

I love that when the boy cap outfit for Elle came up, I paused the video and thought "she looks like a mash of Ryan and Sharpay" only to unpause and have you reference exactly that! I love your videos so much. So informative and calm yet gorgeous and fun!!

I loved this! I love this movie but I've never really stopped to think about how the fashion helps to tell the story too. I think a video on the live action bratz movie would be so cool, I think the fashion in that movie also helps a lot with the story telling.

I also love Elle's "lawyerly" outfits more than her others, but that could be because I'm not a fan of pink

I find it so interesting how the Callahan thing was framed as her being “hit on” when it was clearly sexual harassment….even by the standards of the time.

thats why i love this movie. embracing stereotypical feminity instead of rejecting it with disgust and accepting masculine traits insead. i´m so sick of "feminist" movies who are just as sexist by telling women that being feminine is inferior, pathetic, boring, cheesy...its so counterintuitive and doesnt make any sense. just like in sex and the city where everyone criticizes charlot and points out about her being judgemental, while glorifying samantha (allthough she´s just as judgemental) just because shes not traditional.

This is a feminist movie. Not only that but there are movies around the same time that give dimension to feminine female characters - Miss Congeniality and Clueless predate Legally Blonde and I definitely love those movies for that reason.

I too like Elle’s work clothes better, but the fun I get from seeing someone sporting such pink and bold clothes with that amount of confidence, makes me wanna be the girliest girl like her

I had been waiting for this deep dive!! I had noticed the thing about her work wear too, it spoke loudly that she was in a way taking inspiration from Vivien. I always thought that Vivien & Elle's dynamic was of mutual (grudging at the beginning) admiration, where Elle wanted to learn from Vivien how to taken more seriously while Vivien wanted to learn how to be more free-spirited from Elle.

I'm fascinated by the correlations you pick up in these films. I always felt the fashion in chick-flicks was just for fashion and what was trendy, but they indeed are used for symbolism and foreshadowing of things in the plot.
