@The Dark Overlord To a degree, there's some truth. In Asia especially, red is the color of good luck and celebration. More traditional couples will even wear red instead of the more western (and now popular) white during a wedding. So wearing red at a funeral is considered a huge, huge no-no, as if you're "celebrating" someone's death.

I have a feeling that Marcie is the way that she is because in the movie it’s revealed that she never had a mom, and very clearly resents her dad. So she kinda sees Courtney as like a mother figure in her life and that’s why she tries so hard to stay on her good side.
@walqqr14 жыл бұрын
I always felt bad for her dad. You can tell he tries hard to be a good dad, but gets bullied by his own kid in return... you can tell he is a pushover and probably spoiled her to make up for the mom's absence, that would explain why she's a brat. Courtney bullies her too, like in the prom when she made fun of Marcie for being "dumb", you could tell how Marcie was uncomfortable.
@orangecaramellatte4 жыл бұрын
I know it’s really sad. Idk if I’m looking too deep into this but maybe in a way she kinda blames him for their mom not being there. Idk not much was explained in that one scene but she clearly resents him for some reason. And yeah I’m thinking that she tolerates a lot of Courtney’s abuse because she doesn’t want to lose her status as popular, and because Courtney may have been the only mother figure in her life so losing that would be extremely damaging to her.

Just an observation: the teens in Heathers do look a lot more like teenagers. I looked up the actors ages online and found out that four of the main actors in Heathers were between the ages of 17 and 20 at the time of the film’s release while the four jawbreakers girls were between 23 and 27 at the time of the film’s release. Not a criticism, but something I noticed.
@jessicajalali35534 жыл бұрын
For Jawbreaker, they casted the actresses older on purpose as a way of poking fun at past high school movies that casted actors way older than high school age, like Grease.
@laurenconrad17994 жыл бұрын
@@jessicajalali3553 That actually makes sense. In Grease, they had to constantly color Jan's hair because the actress was going grey (31 years old at the film's premiere) and I kept waiting for the school principal to stop scolding Sonny as a student and ask him if he was there to pick up his daughter (the actor was 32, but I thought he looked older. lol)

In the original script, the mom was out of town because she was coming back from a facelift. The husband likely on business. That isnt mentioned in the movie. Also in the script her parents normally spend lots of time away from the home like 6 months out of the year either on business or the mom probably on a ladies vacation.
@Girl-p9m2 ай бұрын
@@mikaelemafi4618 The door unlocked part is crazy. But i do know some people who leave their cars unlocked but never met someone leave their house unlocked especially a nice house like that. Maybe she left the house door unlocked for her friends to arrive in the morning for her birthday? BUT they never show the girls entering the house so they definitely could have broken in like sneaking in through a window or back door. They were very acquainted with Liz’s house. Or one of her friends had a key since they are so close. they never locked it when leaving when they were putting her in the trunk. Her parents were away for lots of time out of the year like 6 months or more, so she likely had these girls over a lot to keep her company.

What I love most about Julies outfits is you can see visually how courtney’s control loosens, her first day out of the group she wears white sunglasses that look like her purple ones she wore the day before, and had her hair done up and a more stylish jacket. Still eye catching, but much more subdued than the days before. Her colors gradually become darker and more casual, and her sunglasses are black like the type of sunglasses a real teenager would wear. as well her clothes are less and less colorful, with either green or blue to represent the calmness you mentioned. However, her prom outfit i feel is her getting to be confident in herself, wearing a brighter shade of blue than usual and being more done up because while she’s been away from courtney, the whole time she was scared of courtney lying to the police and saying she killed liz. but now, she has the upper hand and while not needing to draw attention, she doesn’t have to hide either.
@auburnsongbird20442 жыл бұрын
I felt like her hair at the prom looked similar to the way the Greeks portrayed the hair of their goddesses in those old paintings you find in museums. Could that plausibly suggest that she is a god in her own mind, as well as a callback to her earlier quote; "I made you, I'm god, deal with it!". Don't know...but I did like the hairpiece all the same. 🙂

I've always been obsessed with the looks in this movie, especially the sunglasses. They're soooo cool. I loved that 50s style in the 90s

You should definitely make a style analysis, on Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion, because I’d love to hear your input about the movie and the clothes.

Julie's wardrobe after she breaks away from Courtney is like a mix of Liz and Fern
@ohok.66674 жыл бұрын
fern's outfits reminds me of sandy from grease, and i think this was kind of hinted when she talked about seeing julie's boyfriend in grease twice.

It’s clear that Courtney and fern both wanted to be Liz, but they could never replace her . Fern idolized her, and Courtney killed her out of sheer envy .

Fern wanted to be with Liz. She had a crush on her. Maybe she didn’t have the words for it or understand her feelings because of society but Fern is clearly gay. It is also a running joke throughout the movie. “Maybe she’s bicoastal or just plain bi” “I bet Fern likes it” “How about some public affection, girls?” There are more gay mentions but some are offensive to mention

Courtney wanted Liz’s popularity but she didn’t want to be her. She never wanted to rule with kindness. She despised Liz. She told Marcie to hate pink. Marcie used to wear pink all the time in middle school. As soon as Liz is dead Marcie mentions “now you can be prom queen”. It is very clear Courtney has had conversations with Marcie about disliking Liz and her popularity. She only wore pink when she was trying to impress Dane in the bedroom. Dane was Liz’s former love interest and prospective prom king. Because she knew innocence would convince him to go forward with her seducing him to keep his attraction towards her, so the school would vote her as his prom queen. Liz was cheer captain, Dane was football player. He is described to be “born to be prom king”. Vylette later became cheer captain which shows that as soon as Liz died there was an opening. Courtney wants to be a daring bold pinup style popular girl at school. Liz led by kindness and she was demure with pastels, pinks, elegant and princess like silhouettes. Nothing you see Courtney in.

@@Girl-p9m yeah she definitely had a thing for her ever since Liz helped pick up her school supplies off the the ground. We love a charitable queen lol. & I see the way she looks at her & talks about her, the “cat’s meow” ish lol. Even when she took Courtney’s transactional makeover under conniving circumstances, she started to wear Liz’s signature color. Liz had the little geeky girl gone lol

@@Girl-p9m yes Courtney was always a snake in the grass & it’s sad that Liz underestimated her envy & missed all the signs 🚩

Just popping in to say that Jawbreaker is an old fave movie of mine. At the time it came out none of my friends cared about it and even now it doesn't get the attention it deserves. So thank you for giving it this analysis. My crush on Rose McGowan started with this film as well 💜

Notice how Julie and Marci are wearing similar colors green, purple and blue while Courtney is wearing red a color that not only is different but also stands out it feels like there telling us that Country is the “queen B “ and her friends are just like her minions to her

Pre-makeover Fern is like the prettiest person I’ve ever seen. I mean she’s still gorgeous after, but just her plain face is so beautiful. And her hair and plain baggy outfits are kinda cute, she looks like Sawako from Kimi ni Todoke and her outfits remind me of the ones I’ve seen in some productions of Carrie.
