Like so many others, I was also turned down for the latest round of Ford GT allocations. It would have made for a great flip once I figured out how to buy a $500k car. The new car does look great but I have never loved the 05-06 cars. As a car guy though, you can't deny the insane beauty of the original version. Great story Casey.

@Conor right!! My dad always loved the 05-06's right when they came out as well, and so did I. Being a car guru as a kid, I really did try to get him to buy one. I remember sending him forsale ads for them back when they just came out and were around 100k and I would include some cheesy motivational speech about buying dream cars in the attachment. I was always so stoked to talk about them with him because my dad was never truly a car guy, but he did and still does have a sweet spot for the Ford GT's and loved talking about them. Man, if I could go back in time and convince him to buy one now knowing how much they cost now. If I ever do win it big someday, one thing I would absolutely love is to buy my dad his own GT and get my mom's old red T/A back for her.

I did some autocross with the Mid-South region SCCA in the late 1990's. One beautiful Saturday race day morning, a guy showed up in a car that looked similar to the car in this video. However, it had a lovely patina and was an authentic GT-40, not a replica. The car belonged to a doctor who allowed his mechanic to autocross his car. The car was entered in at least three events that year. It was fantastic to see it run and now a great memory.

Living most of my life in clemson sc, l have a friend, who is a retired radiologist. He loves cars, and back in the eighties he bought a gt 40 race car. It was the bubble roof dan gurney car, painted in the gulf livery. He bought it for 80k, sold it for 120k, and was very happy with his deal. Last time it went through Barrett Jackson, it sold for over a million.
@LapoftheWorld5 жыл бұрын
Those GT-40 replicas are BA. There was a fellow that used to bring one (possibly also a Cav, but in Azure blue ) up to the Le Belle Macchine event in the Poconos in probably the mid-late 90s - early 2ks and would run it at the track. My recollection was that he had some modern tires he would run on presumably heritage-looking wheels but, on the straights at least, he would blow the doors off of everything short of F-40s on slicks, a Group 5 spec Pantera (by Hall), and the occasional Alfa Tipo 33/3. You definitely have to get into some pretty modern stuff before you'd find it's equal in mid-gear acceleration.

@@SigTheSauceMan in the book “Racing in the Rain, my years with brilliant drivers, legendary sports cars, and a dedicated team.” By John Horsman regarding the weight of their three “lightweight” Gulf GT40’s for the 1968 Le Mans race, the weights were: P/1074 - 2,202.4lbs. , P/1075 - 2,233.3lbs, and P/1076 - 2,202.4lbs. In 1969 they were slightly heavier, closer to 2,260lbs. Cobras were heavier, but also cost a lot less than a GT40. The millions invested to make them light and strong. Of course the MkII’s were heavier with the 427 and larger parts to assist with the power and cooling.

Some of my greatest memories of cars was going down to Nelson Lamborghini and seeing all the exotics. I remember before he got the Lamborghini license and being a dodge dealer I was sitting in the Burger King next door when I saw a flatbed trailer roll past with a brand new (back then) 92-93 viper. I ran out as fast as I could just to hear it start up. As I’m standing there at 14 years old salivating all over myself a guy next to me asks if I like it. Couldn’t speak and only shook my head with my jaw on the floor. Very genuinely the guy says yeah I kind of like them too, reaches his hand out and introduces himself “Hi I’m Greg Nelson.” Stunned even more cause now I’ve just met the owner of the guy with his name in a building.

Ive actually got wasted and had a bright red sports car ,slammed tinted after market everything loud exhaust and intakes, tinted taillights and HID headlights and foglamps . Just a cops catcher when I was sober but also a lady catcher lol and was 3 hours away from home never ever drank cause I liked to drive my car and would rather show off my car ?and spend all my money upgrading it) then party and I made this girl I just met sit with me outside the car all night ( was afraid to get a DUI if a cop showed up and we were sitting/sleeping in the car)till I sobered up to drive cause the girl told her friends I would drive her home so that was her ride they left , and Ill never forget the comments we got all night first from people drunk leaving the bar and going from one bar to another , then the random homeless/wonders walking around the sketchy area of downtown Providence Rhode Island. And I never left that car unattended unless I was stairing out the window at it and I was sloppy drunk and would not let her in the car also cause I was afraid she would puke one my expensive Bride racing seats and interior . She was so mad and all I did was talk about the car and what I had done to it and quarter mile times after each upgrade lmao . By the time the sun was coming up she was helping me spay wax the car with my new NANO wax and microfibers. In the end I spent the rest of the weekend at her house she shared with her roommates. Went from great,awful, amazing. That one car brought so many more memorable stories. My Mom called the car Christine after the steven king movie cause when I owned that car I was a cocky young guy that matched his clothes and sneakers to his car and let that car run my life. We won't even mention the 4 motors and 3 -5speed transmissions I put in it . I had a loan on the car and at the same time another loan for motors and transmissions that was bigger that the one I had to purchase the car and the car was 2 years old. But I would not change a thing . Even the fact I lost my license 4 times for 60 days and one time for 5 years. I was always the designated driver and everyone loved the car and had there own stories about it. And it was fast for the times. Not Honda civic fast I mean fast ,fast for the late 90's early 2000's. Car stories are the best stories. Casey and me I feel were one in the same growing up, Id love to hang with him . I can just relate we would've torn the world up in our teens/twentys ...responsibility......... as 2 cool young car guys could. Lol

Still cant, LOL. but have been using mine for nearly 20 years now with no problems at all. Limited spirited street driving but a lot of track days and events. And Yes i do cane it mercilessly.... I have a steel sandwich plate which stiffens up the centre bearing area and service the box every few years... Thats it. My box was As New when i acquired it but i really cant fault it at all.... I was lucky enough to have some seat time in a reproduction 65 GT40, it was the most demanding car I’ve driven. It didn’t want to drive in a straight line, was only happy in corners, it wanted to accelerate/decelerate, no constant speed, seats so tight I couldn’t get my phone out of my back pocket, it was extremely hard to shift correctly, the clutch bite point was tiny (super easy to stall) and it was FAST. To drive it at race speed on a racetrack would be a superhuman feat. To finish or actually win would be a miracle only the best would accomplish. 10/10, would recommend. Hopefully one day I’ll get to own one.
