Wow! He knows about the connection between the Hodges letter and the anti-slavery Baptist division in Virginia and Kentucky that went on between the 1790s and around 1820. That’s a remarkably rare thing. Carter Tarrant’s role in the Baptists Friends of Humanity is largely ignored even when people know about the Lincoln family’s connection to abolition. That made some serious points with me. I feel less like the voice in the wilderness.

Finished "And There Was Light" a few months ago. A great, currently relevant read. Funny guy, too.

Thanks for this posting. Meacham for me personally is very much like America is for Europeans at times. I know that he's a dear but naive nevertheless too. He actually mirrored my own liking for Douglas and Nixon at the same time here. America needs great men but they'll never be truly perfect. Yes, Trump wouldn't have been president without his time on television. He mastered today's most popular media protection, the reality show. There, however, navity makes one fall down alright for someone like a Talleyrand would have seen the disaster coming and would have atleast tried to avoid it

The manner in which Jon cuts off the moderator and ignores her questions needs improvement. I had to stop watching 22:23

She didn't even get billing in the presentation's description. Of course you went through the introduction to find her name. They are old friends. She holds her own. Look her up.

Thought provoking. Interesting comment that our many of our Presidents either had strong father figures who set a high bar for achievement (both Roosevelts, Kennedy, both Bushes) or were absent and/or less than inspiring figures (Ford, Reagan, Clinton, Obama). Lincoln had a strong moral compass that he followed, even though it pointed in a direction that the country was not ready to follow. While I don't necessarily agree with the direction that several of the Presidents necessarily wanted to take us over the past 100 years, the best of those Presidents: Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Reagan, along with others, did have a vision for America being something better. Can't see it with Trump. And while Meachem is a friend/advisor to Biden, if Biden has strong moral convictions, he's not necessarily able, at this stage of his life, to both articulate them and/or lead the country in pursuing them.
