On February 9th at 7pm at Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C., Princeton University’s James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions and Ford's Theater hosted renowned historian Allen C. Guelzo in conversation with Lucas Morel of Washington and Lee University and Richard Brookhiser of National Review. The trio discussed the newly released 2nd edition of Dr. Guelzo’s book, Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President, which has been updated and revised with a new preface. Since its original publication in 1999, Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President has garnered numerous accolades, not least the prestigious Lincoln Prize. Join Dr. Guelzo for an exciting discussion exploring the legacy of America’s most celebrated president!
This event was co-sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute, the Ethics and Public Policy Center, American University’s Lincoln Scholars Program, the Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia, and the Civil War Round Table of the District of Columbia. This event was also part of the James Madison Program Initiative on Politics and Statesmanship.
Allen C. Guelzo is Thomas W. Smith Distinguished Research Scholar and Director of the James Madison Program Initiative on Politics and Statesmanship. Previously, he was Senior Research Scholar in the Council of the Humanities at Princeton University, and the Director of Civil War Era Studies and the Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era at Gettysburg College. During 2010-11 and again in 2017-18, he served as the Wm.L. Garwood Visiting Professor in the James Madison Program at Princeton University. He holds the MA and PhD in History from the University of Pennsylvania.
Lucas Morel is John K. Boardman, Jr. Professor of Politics and Head of the Politics Department at Washington and Lee University. He has taught at W&L since July 1999. He also teaches in the summer Master’s Program in American History and Government at Ashland University in Ohio; summer programs for the Claremont Institute for the Study of Statesmanship and Political Philosophy; and high school teacher workshops sponsored by the Ashbrook Center, the Gilder-Lehrman Institute, the Jack Miller Center, the Bill of Rights Institute, and the Liberty Fund. In 2008-09, he was the Garwood Visiting Research Fellow at the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University.
Richard Brookhiser is a senior editor of National Review, a senior fellow at the National Review Institute, and the author of several books, including Founders’ Son, Right Time, Right Place, George Washington on Leadership, What Would the Founders Do?, Gentleman Revolutionary, Rules of Civility, America’s First Dynasty, Alexander Hamilton, American, Founding Father: Rediscovering George Washington, Way of the WASP, and The Outside Story.

I loved that Dr. Guelzo made the point that Lincoln did not see vengeance as a principle of democracy. We should all remember that in 2024 as we go to the polls.
