Fun fact: The first enemy you fought (27:20) never attacked you. If you return to the same place later, it will be closed off with police tape. A fan theory is that James saw a homeless man as a monster and killed him out of frustration, though this might just be a leftover from an earlier version of the plot. True or not, it makes your reaction unintentionally dark & hilarious

@19:12 You're partly right. The devs managed to fit the town including textures completely in PS2's memory. There is no streaming of assets but the amount of detail/polycount would be too much to render without the fog and the very limited draw distance. Ironically the fog itself with all the fullscreen alpha overdraw is a fps killer

Always cool to see new players get excited of these games! Little personal suggestion: The Enhanced Edition mod disables the native Film Grain effect for some reason by default. I'd go to the in-game Options and enable it. It's a kinda crucial trademark part of SH franchise's visual style.

It's nice to see Silent Hill 2 again, but will you also make Silent Hill 3? The beauty of the second chapter is the dark, gray environment and more similar to the first chapter, only that monsters, like Pyramid Head. But even the third chapter, more experimental, was great, but the first chapter remains untouchable. Even if the second and third are respectable in turn.

H had only just killed her then cam to silent hill with her in the back of the car.

@@LIZZgame It's that you've repeated more than a few times that if the game wants you to go somewhere then you go anywhere but and explore. Then in this video you made a beeline for the objective. If you had done the tiniest bit of exploring like you say then you would have discovered the key down the first alleyway shaving a half hour off this video and ultimately getting you to where you were trying to get to sooner.

I hope you played Born from a wish after finishing this. Anyway, a couple of days ago Masahito Ito (one of the developers) stated the influence of Lynch's films in this game, especially the film "Lost Highway". A film that happens to be one of my all-time favorite films. Although its way of experiencing sins is not melancholic or reflective like this game but dark and dangerous. Highly recommended.

Silent hill games all have a specific meaning to the protagonist. To monsters, clues, and people they meet. Also, the fog represents the protagonists' clouded judgment of what they sinned as to silent hill appearing to lure them in. So all in all, silent hill is a dimension not a place that punishes you if you have sinned, and either its up to you to live with the guilt or die with it.

​@@LIZZgameThat's because in the first game the town doesn't manifest Harry's nightmares but Alessa's. Silent Hill is a physical place (otherwise James would never have been able to spend his vacation with his wife). It's just that the town has this ability to transform into "The Otherworld". But that "Otherworld" doesn't punish you (as many others think), but it frees you (said by Masahiro Ito, one of the creators). In the first game, the hospital beds and rusty metal bars found throughout the game replicate the environment of the hospital basement where Alessa was tortured for years, the creatures are aberrations from the stories she read as a child. She didn't commit any sin but everyone else did, in that sense her liberation doesn't come through overcoming her guilt but by releasing her anger, anger at the rest of the town (especially the people of the cult and the members of the hospital). James on the other hand is not bound by anger, but by guilt. Alessa wanted everyone to feel what she felt and through her powers she affected the whole town, Cheryl, Harry, Cybil and everyone trapped in the town. James doesn't want the same thing so the hell of Silent Hill is just HIS hell. In that sense, the first game is considerably more aggressive thematically as it originates from anger, hence its soundtrack is louder, Silent Hill 2 on the other hand, is more introspective and sensual, therefore ambient music predominates. The fog (used due to technical limitations) will always represent the uncertainty of the affected being.

Glad you play SH2! I wanted to comment on something you said as an reflex that was actually very correct. But that would be a massive spoiler. What I can say is that the monster and character designs in SH2 are very well crafted to make you understand the story. Even the environmental designs do carry the story. It will make all sense at one point. SH2 is very cohesive and grounded actually. It is also dealing with very heavy themes that a lot of people can relate to.

Oh yes! I was thinking what to do today I still prefer SH1 over any SH but I feel like you will enjoy this one much more. The PC port + Enhanced Edition mod is pretty much THE definitive way of playing SH2 this day and age. Especially if you want to play it in real HD quality, without any censorship and such. Or if you do not own a PS2 and a CRT.

If it counts Silent Hill 2 generally hand holds you towards one of it's endings which I personally consider the good ending so you won't have to worry about it since you kinda have to go out of the way to get the other endings. But that's the thing: the four endings in SH2 are alot more nuanced than "good-bad" in terms of narrative meaning. It's really up to you which ending is the best and worst outcome.
