This is an excellent resource, very clearly explained. Thanks so much for doing it. Would be interested in your thoughts on how possible it is to bridge aspects of positivism and interprevism in order to 'take the best bits of both'. Is that feasible ever or are they two opposed in approach?
@TheTEACHERSOCIOLOGY4 жыл бұрын
They are. BUT many sociologist may triangulate their methods, e.g. use more than one. So Combine statistics to gain the patterns, and then incorporate via unstructured interviews qualitative data.

Would they ever ask us a 10 mark question on the concepts of Interpretivists or positivist??
@TheTEACHERSOCIOLOGY5 жыл бұрын
I would advise, that If it is on the specification, then they could ask it. It would be useful to be able to understand that positivists prefer science, reliability, representative data and the methods that they use. Likewise with Interpretivists, their main goal is validity and the methods that they use :-)

How do the different approaches of positivism and interpretivism relate to the debate about structure and agency?
@hanamuneer82333 жыл бұрын
Hi. Positivist approach whilst using the scientific method to explain human behaviour in their pursuit of establishing behavioural /social ‘facts’, has to come from a structuralist viewpoint that behaviour is an affect of social structures. When agency, or choice comes into place, behaviour becomes unpredictable, which is why interpretivists counter-argue that sociology cannot be a science and instead choose to look into the meanings people attach to their actions. Hope this helps? Let me know if you have any further questions.

Max Weber did of course introduce verstehen or empathy to study sociology.

@TheTEACHERSOCIOLOGY5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your email. Bowlby theory of attachment is a psychological explanation not a sociological one. So these paradigm would not apply. It would be more beneficial for you to ask a Psychology tutor. I am solely Sociology. Thanks Kate ;-)
