Years ago, i moved into a house that had a garden bed. So i bought a bunch of starts and spent several hours put them into the bed. I was so excited the next day when I woke up. I grabbed a cup of coffee and raced out to see my hard work. But unknown to me, my neighbor who was an appliance repairman, had many (about 40, i guess) old appliances in his backyard, which also house many rats. Overnight, they came into my yard and pulled out every plant, rootballs and soil included, from the ground, through the hedge between our properties and ate most of the plants. We know this because we followed the dirt and eaten to the roots plants into their yard, and even found several still munching. Wish I knew your tuille trick then. It was a very expensive lesson, from the loss of the cost of the original plants, the replacement plants, and the t-post and hardware cloth fence I had to erect around the garden i was told I needed if I wanted to ever see a plant mature. Those were very expensive meals I made from the produce. Lol

You may think poorly of me but I actually used my moms 70 year old wedding veil which went way down over a train so very long for several years when I first moved to Florida. May sound irreverent but I was trying to be less of a pack rat and I was stunned by the poor soil and vast number of birds, insects and diseases to contend with. I gardened all my life but never more difficult than north central fl. It lasted several years then I went onto using old sheer curtains.

I watched this video at the beginning of the 2022 growing season. It SAVED my plants! This year for the first time, four legged critters started eating my plants. This was the first Spring since our two dogs passed away, and the critters must think it's open season on my garden. I only had time to put the tulle over two of my raised beds, and the plants in the other beds were eaten to stems! I reseeded and made sure to cover the newly seeded beds in tulle and it worked like a charm! Thank you for this terrific tool!

You call it tulle (tool). Here in Washington State we have always called it tully (tool-lee). Thanks for sharing all your innovations! I love them! Here's an idea for you...Instead of peanut butter jars for hummingbird feeders, you could buy the plastic lids for the Ball or Kerr canning jars (the small ones) and burn holes in the top of those! This way you can put them in your dish washer when they become empty! Ball and Kerr jars come in a variety of small sizes, and they both can use the plastic lids!

Based on your video, I ordered some tulle. It arrived yesterday, and I'm already using it all around the garden. So far, so good. Thanks for the tip! When planting seeds, I plant them all and water in properly and then lay a window screen on top. That keeps the birds and critters out until the seedlings get a foothold. Once the shoots appear, I remove the screens. Neighbors think it's weird, but I'm having much more luck in the garden this year being consistent with my screens.

The right Tule for the right job. Way ahead of you Darlin', I started using it last year. I have a large planting area under a huge Apple Tree. Here in Colorado we are subject to violent hail. I grow dozens of Peppers (Sweet and Hot). I cover rows with wire fencing standing on top of tomato cages (tunnel shaped), then I drape Tule over the top! It keeps bugs out. Unless I lift the sides. It keeps the hail out! Lets the sun in. Keeps Tree Debris out. And rain can go through and I can hand water right through it. I love the stuff. I might Marry it! LOL I washed it in the washing machine and bought yet another, now they are both out there. I will be buying more. I like your seedling box idea.

My grandfather, long before vertical gardening was popular, used tulles to make slings for melons he grew on trellises. I don't remember him ever using string to tie up any plants.. always strips of tulle. My grandmum had a home business making ballet tutus so tulle was always on hand. I suppose that might be where he got the idea. Even the smallest scraps would find their way into his garden to protect a plant or tie up another. One of the things I remember most about his garden was all the colorful patches of tulle scattered about. When they got older & were unable to handle the maintenance on their home they moved to an apartment with a good sized patio. I remember it was a jungle with everything growing vertically or hanging and of course the patchwork of tulle color. Your video brought back such fond memories, thank you.

Thank you so much for the best tip ever in warding off rodents, critters etc.. I've watched your hummingbird videos, made a quick fountain for them with your fantastic videos on them and now am getting Tulle!! Absolute life saver for the heartache I have gone through in the past with the critter nonsense! So, thank you so much!! God bless!

Wow Sweetie - I see that I'm 2 years late, but better late than never! You are incredible, I just love your 'Spirit and Smarts', your passion is wonderful!! I just also watched your great video about gardening in Tote containers. O M Goodness, I am 72 and dying to begin planting in my postage size gardening area, you have me so excited :) My daughters took Ballet dance for 12 years, so I really, really understand Tulle :) Plus, I use some stacked clear Tote containers for sweaters, pullovers, etc. in my solo bedroom. Thank you so much for your Passion and Wisdom (all on a shoestring, so to speak) - YOU really made me smile, and made my day! ~~Waving @ you from the West Coast of Canada ~~& Big Hugs and Thanks, Ursula

Thank you for the idea of using tulle. I had recently heard of using organza (the stuff I saw had a much tighter weave than tulle, almost like a sheet), but I like your idea better because I think the airflow will be better, but I'm hoping the tulle will work as well for bugs. I haven't gardened in over 30 years, so I'm a newbie again. Zone 6a here in southeast Michigan. Just starting out small this year with a few containers. Hoping to go bigger next year, we'll see how it goes. I really enjoy your great personality and down to earth (no pun intended) approach to gardening regardless of what kind of space or budget people have. : ) P.S.- just now ordered 2 of the tulle (white) from your link.

I got so fed up with dealing with squash borers that I've switched to growing squash plants in containers this year and covered the plants with tulles as per your methods and been hand pollinating them. So far so good. Thanks to your great ideas!

Thank you Robbie! Just bought 4 for my yard. Im going to drape it on my grapes, fruit trees, and plants. We need to detour the squirrel's in our yard. Maybe I could drape it on my bird seed poles to stop squirrels from eating bird seed out of the feeders. Love your videos!!!

Great idea for the tote lids, Robbie, also might offer some protection from this relentless heat in Cen Cal. You have given me an idea for lining the beds of my above ground gardens too, would be worth a try against gophers and much cheaper than chicken wire. Love your little puppy at the end of the video with her tulle bow. Have a great day.

Its probably a bottomless pot and the roots are anchored in the ground. A small pot like that would topple over and wouldn't hold a tree that size.

Hi, I use tulle in my sewing. Thanks for info on the use of tulle for gardening and the great sale $$. I ordered 4 bolts(rolls). Update 08-27-20: it has been a few months since I purchased my tulle. It has worked great in keeping the pest off of my container crops. I had to hand pollinate my cucumbers and tomatoes which are thriving. I had not gotten around to putting tulle around my collard seedlings and overnight they had several chew holes. I picked caterpillars off and installed tulle around the container. No new chew holes. I now place tulle right away on my seedling containers. I have stakes in each corner and wrap the tulle around. I make top out of tulle to keep out pest. Thanks again Robbie for the tip.

OMG... may I say I LOVE YOU!!!! I am so glad I subscribed. I wish I had done it sooner. I never thought it was the birds that chewed up all my new seedlings. How dumb and I should have figured that out. I bought a whole bolt of Tulle a few months ago. I was waiting until spring to cover my zucchini plants to keep the squash bugs out. I will be covering some milk cartons and cover my new seeds. OMG now I know how to keep the birds from pecking my JUJUBE fruit. I will spread some over the trees to confuse the birds. (I feed them you would think they would appreciate that LOL) The neighbors think I am a crazy lady: now that I will have pink tulle all over they will know I am crazy. I gotta go now and cover all my new winter garden...… Thank you, thank you. You are the best. I wish you were my neighbor down here in Tn.... :)

Hi from Southwest TN. This tip have saved my garden for 3 years now! I wrap my tomato clusters loosely with tulle and secure with clothes pins. We have black worms that destroys the fruit. I pick my tomatoes as they get ripe then close the cluster. This is fantastic! Thank you Robbie for saving my organic garden. 🌻🐛👒🐸🐞🏵 Rhonda

Yes, crinoline and netting is stiffer than tulle, used for slips like Robbie mentioned. But definitely would do a similar job, gives you options for which is cheaper for your project. Worked as a bridal consultant for over 10 years.
