I've heard it as British ship and Irish lighthouse and a large variety of other versions... but lately it's always a US naval vessel. When a name is given, it's the USS Abraham Lincoln, or the USS Montana, or any number of other ships... the first time I heard it, it was a Canadian lighthouse in Nova Scotia, and the Abraham Lincoln. One thing that seems to be common to the US Navy versions is that all these ships are the "second largest in the fleet" and are "escorted by this number of ships, another number of other ships, and some support craft"

The highest ranking officer in the US Navy probably doesn't sail on any ship very often at all. Nor would any naval officer threaten to blow anyone out of the water like that.

Any mariner that has piloted a large ship knows there can be miscommunication between ships or maritime structures when communicating on the open maritime radio system. All can hear and all can reply. The carrier group knew the light house was there but the carrier thought the sea contact they spotted was talking to them not the light house. The whole idea is to know who you are speaking to and who is answering. Whether this particular story is true or not doesn't make a difference. Mistakes like this happen all the time over the maritime radio system. You are fully aware of the situation around you, you just have to make sure you are speaking with the right contact. I should know because I piloted two carriers during my naval career and miscommunication is a constant thing when dealing with multiple contacts at sea, especially when ships don't properly identify themselves when talking.
