I was struck by lightning in Sept. 1979 in Tampa, Florida. I was riding my bike super fast, side-by-side with my friend, we both lived in the same college dorm at USF. She was only 2 feet away next to me on my left side. The lightning bolt came down with a huge "BANG" noise & bifurcated in front of my face, striking each of my hands on my handlebars. Shot me & my bike up into the air, then knocked me over to the ground. There was no rain, yet. My hands & fingers were smoking. They said at the hospital, that the rubber from my bike tires saved my life. Eventually my burnt fingernails grew out. But I never felt the same.

Wow! When I lived in Florida we would get lightening like this during the day when the SUN WAS SHINING! Florida the only place where I went into the bathroom during a storm, scared to death by the violent lightning.

I'm from Florida. You think it's bad there? You should see Atlantic Beach North Carolina... 3:00 a.m. we're laying in bed dead asleep, loudest sound I have EVER heard - I swear to god I was absolutely convinced a nuclear bomb had just detonated. I was literally frozen with fear. I laid there for several seconds actually expecting the building to be ripped apart any moment. I couldn't tell if that orange light outside the window was just the porch light or the glow of a mushroom cloud. My husband somehow was still dead asleep, but I reached over and took his hand, still convinced that this was it. After a while, there were some white flashes followed by more loud cracks. Relief washed over me finally, and I cried. About a month later my husband and I were in the living room watching a movie around midnight. Bright white flash with a simultaneous SNAPBOOM!!!!!!! I literally screamed bloody murder. My husband immediately began comforting me and continued to do so throughout the next several peals of thunder. Both times it wasn't raining and it was at night, and came without any warning. Growing up a Floridian I am not afraid of thunderstorms, but Atlantic Beach is on a whole other level.

In our knowledge system, a lightning will always strike the same place a number of times after the first strike. We call that place "isishozi" and we warn children to avoid going near isishozi when there is thunder.

From what I've seen, lightning can either destroy a tree, just damage it, or do nothing at all to it. I think it depends on exactly what path it takes to ground. If it finds the path of least resistance is through the sap in the tree, you can forget about the tree- it will literally explode. If it just travels down the wet surface of the bark, it might do no damage at all.
