And there's a checkbox labeled 'Invert' right there on the panel that flips the gradient and doesn't require remembering yet another esoteric keyboard shortcut.

I was thinking the same thing. Invert it and it literally affects precisely what wasn’t a part of the original gradient.

Hi anthoney good way to alter and use then gradient tool but how do you not alter the lighthouse maybe you dont need or want to add contrast to the lighthouse or rhe land

Ah, you go into the "subtract" button, choose the brush and paint over the lighthouse. Adversely, if you wanted to use that same contrast of the sky to the jet ski, you'd select "add" button and then brush. Use your density / flow / feather to control. It's just like painting in or out a layer in PS using black or white.

Anthony, I really would like to determine how to lock a mask in place. Frustrating when you have one (like the brush) and every time you try to add or subtract from your original mask, it moves the shading if you cross over it with your cursor. Please, is there a way to lock that in place?

Good tutorial. Thx! Do you know what happened with the presets that used to be there for gradients and radial filters? I.e before the masking feature I used to be able to select an area with the filter and then apply a preset to it. Now those presets are gone so I have to manually make the changes each time

Anthony, you should stop embarrassing those of us who've been using Lightroom since Moby Dick was a minnow. I did not know this trick but should have. I've used invert or its apostrophe shortcut once or twice -- okay, hundreds of times -- on rad filters, so why didn't I think of trying it on a grad? BTW it also works on brushes. Did you know that, Mr. Smartypants? 🤣

What happens if you create a new mask and invert it?

You wouldn't need to invert a new mask. You'd simply create the new mask and select the area but you'd need to adjust all settings as compared to duplicating the first mask.
