One of the things that I like most about A Link Between Worlds is the character writing regarding Lorule's counterparts to Link, Zelda, and Ganon, especially how the lack of a Triforce affects them. Ravio is Link without the courage to save the world himself, instead loaning his items out to a braver hero to fight in his stead. Hilda is Zelda without the wisdom to see the consequences of her plan or to see Yuga's untrustworthiness. Yuga is Ganondorf without the power to conquer Lorule himself, relying on manipulating and then betraying Hilda to get the power he needs instead of the raw might that Ganondorf can use. It's nothing special, but it is logically tied into the worldbuilding with Lorule being a mirror image of Hyrule with not just major characters but NPCs with counterparts between them, and the lack of a Triforce would mean that the main counterparts would lack their originals' key defining trait that ties them to a specific piece of the Triforce.

that makes a lot of sense actually. that’s probably why Yuga was able to merge with Ganon so easily, because they’re so similar in nature.

@rogue_2k3742 ай бұрын
What I also like is that in spite of not fitting their counterparts Triforce piece, they still end up fitting one of them. Ravio doesn’t have Link’s courage, but he has the wisdom to seek out one who does. Hilda doesn’t have the wisdom to find a solution, but she has the power to do so. And Yuga doesn’t have the power to conquer, but he was courageous enough to literally merge with the one who did, and then somehow become the dominant personality.

I didn't hardcore grind to buy everything right away, I just explored the shit out of the overworld and consequently had a big enough chunk of cash to buy most of the items outright once Ravio offers to sell them. Also, only a fool doesn't take advantage of his first purchase half off deal and use it on one of the Rods, considering they're the most expensive items. As for the ones I can't buy outright? Get good and survive Lorule long enough to do a bunch of treasure caves and then buy them, obviously.

If you're intimately familiar with ALttP, there are a few hints towards this twist, which I missed. His attire (a nod to Link's appearance when he first enters the Dark World), the fact that he has all those "dungeon" items. He moves into YOUR house and the house in the exact same spot in Lorule is vacant. I even connected the dots that that was Ravio's house. But what that all meant never occurred to me lol

Love the color palette and music. >Musta played Majora's Mask Start to Zora Eggs x100 times as a kid, but just never had the prowess to grasp the 3 day system. I'm on the FINAL Temple of the Ocean runthrough on phantom hourglass (kill me now). Not looking forward to a spirit tracks grind :/ And then there is Zelda II. Link Between Worlds always felt like a triumph of concise game size. For a more traditional Zelda game, I'd much rather have a technically shorter title where the playtime feels efficient and valuable than one that might be longer, but feels too bloated for its own good.
@firebert954 жыл бұрын
With that said, how do you view Breath of the Wild? I personally agree with digestible sizes in Zelda titles, which is why this game and OoT are both up there for me, but I was really impressed by BotW and believe the size and scale work heavily in its favour.
@duffman184 жыл бұрын
@@firebert95 part of why I love BotW so much is because it is broken down into small chunks of gameplay. I like that you can just choose a shrine and play for 15 minutes and then turn the game off again, or if you want you can play for hours. With some games, once you start a quest or mission. You're pocked in for an hour or two and in some older games you can't even save until after the mission, a you can't switch to another game, or turn it off, you have to do it. But with BotW you can play for very short periods and still make progress and you can save anywhere. It seems perfect for both handheld and home gameplay, which is quite a feat to manage to pull off, I think. I'm currently playing through the Link's Awakening remake and I love it because it's got that same portable game design. I never like big open world games that you can't leave for a week because then when you come back to it you have no clue what you were doing or where you're meant to go next In Breath of the Wild that's avoided by basically being so jam packed with stuff. Pick a direction and go walking off in that direction and before long you'll bump into something unique or some mission to do. In Link's Awakening, it's usually pretty obvious to remember what you're doing but they allow you to replay any of the Owl's messages to you, I'm order of most recently received, and so that tells you exactly where you need to be going. I have a bad attention span I guess, but I just like playing a game for 20 minutes then switching to something else. I guess it's cos I grew up with the mega drive, and loads of arcade ports, that trained me into thinking a game session is very short. I don't know how people can sit and play 1 game for 5 hours, but yeah
@parker87844 жыл бұрын
Barry Wohlschlegel yeah like I really enjoy playing a link to the past because it’s kind of short and I already know the secrets so I can just go and do everything. I also really like breath of the wild. I do not enjoy ocarina of time. I got it on my 3ds expecting the greatest game ever made like everyone always says but I made it to the water dungeon and I just do not enjoy it. I haven’t enjoyed exploring the world or the story and the dungeons are just too frustrating in the weird clunky way that the camera moves. I guess it’s really hard to go from botw which had complete freedom and bite size dungeons to ocarinas hour to two hour long dungeons.

This game in hero mode is one of my favorite zelda experiences that I get to play once in a while. Being a fan of LTTP since childhood this game took all my nostalgia and made a modern Zelda out of it. Hero mode brings a true challenge, where seriously feels like you need to strategize carefully what to take, if you want to go for the dungeons that increase your defense or your offense. Where dying posses a serious threat of loosing all your items and therefore loosing the rupees you spent. Even in a perfect playthrough rupees are useful almost all the way up to the end, instead of just having a full wallet for 70% of the adventure. It is all challenging and all meaningful. That is more than I can say from the vast majority of zelda games, specially majoras masks 3D which I'm still salty that is the easiest game on the franchise and it didn't get a hero mode.

@@saricubra2867 I'd argue the korok seeds were never intended to be "filler" as much as much as scraps of mini-puzzles that they could fill the world with. "See that mountain, or any mountain? You can go there!" had been done to death and back. Korok Seeds simply let you discover something no matter where you went on your own. Yes, most are "hit balloons" "pick up suspicious rock" "catch the glowing trail" "fill circle with stones" "push boulder into hole" etc but each one was individualized for its environment, a "thank you" for exploring a non-descript spot on the map a little deeper. "You can go to that mountain, or any mountain, and there will be something interesting to do there." They were never meant to be 100% completed (and the game goes out of its way to mock anyone who did grab every single one of them after stopping giving awards a small percentage of the way through them). Meanwhile, Tests of Strength changed up what, the weapons? The near-useless chest reward? Number of pillars? If every Test of Strength machine had a SINGLE unique attack each to mix in with the standard set, they would have been improved 1000%. One with a flame thrower? Perhaps an ice beam? Mirror Images? Something! Anything! As they are, there is nothing interesting after you've seen a few. They're a chore, and you'd wish they'd just give you your reward and let you on your way. And these were for something that was expected to full complete to get the Hero of the Wild Tunic and each one gave you an always sought spirit orb. I could cherish the Koroks, but I still despise those ToS.
@saricubra28674 жыл бұрын
@@SkaiaMechanic "They were never meant to be 100%" Then why you have a lot of them in the first place? It is also the definition of filler because it's like Wind Waker again when you repeat content, the same applies for those shrines that you mentioned. Why they aren't like the stray fairies in Majora's Mask? The game literally gives you after collecting 15 for each dungeon: the Magic Spin Attack, an extended Magic Meter, Enhanced Defense, and the Great Fairy's Sword. It's a slap in the face for completionists like me and can bring the exploration down and a good reason of why they have to reduce the size of the world and reduce the amount of everything, less is more.
@Random15674 жыл бұрын
Star masterc There’s a lot of them because the world is big, and the game doesn’t require all of them to increase your inventory. They’re there to make sure you can easily find all of them needed for full inventory management and because the world is big They aren’t meant to be fully collected by most, which is why the final reward for all of them is literally golden poop that does nothing. Games don’t have to cater towards rules that gamers make for themselves. You don’t have to collect all 900 koroks just because of some “category”.

I think the three Introductory Zeldas I’d suggest to someone are probably -Link’s Awakening (either DX or Switch. I haven’t got to play Switch yet but everything I see about it looks fantastic and everything I’d hoped it’d be with few exceptions. And...that story. OOF.) -Link Between Words. (It’s fun. The music’s fantastic. You get to explore more than you do in any game since LA tbh. Well except botw but that’s a whole different beast. The story’s simple enough to be easy to follow and not unravel with the Choose Your Destination aspect, yet still makes an impact as easily one of the strongest in execution in the series. Great NPCs. Series Staples with health/exploration/dungeons/final boss.) -Windwaker (Still a pretty solid story but it has issues. Fun mechanics and gameplay, and MUCH more forgiving than the Wii Titles (especially SS!!! That game is not user friendly, and is borderline inaccessible if someone has disabilities or various mental health problems. Wish they’d redo the bloody thing from the ground up without the motion+ but they never will.)

I would say that lttp hasn't been entirely outdone by any single game in the franchise, but nearly every aspect of it has been outdone by individual Zelda games. It is one of the most average Zelda games. I would like to say though: There is a point that bothers me about the latest two games that lttp does better if not well. The fact that you can find certain items in the over-world akin to the way that empty bottles are found, is the coolest type of exploration reward in any Zelda ever. I'm referring to items like the cape, the the magic powder, and the ice rod. Later Zeldas didn't really do this to the extent that lttp did. Half of the inventory screen are either optional or appear optional until late in the game (two medallions, the ice rod and the flute). And these are one of a kind items that don't break and are presented in the same way as any dungeon item. It's cool and I want to see it again. The closest I've seen to this is the rings from the oracle games. The various items in breath of the wild don't feel special as they aren't unique and they break and the 4 champion spells come from completing parts of the story. Again It's not like a link to the past wen't very far with this idea, (there were traces of this even in Zelda 1) but it's something that stands out at least to me.

@duffman184 жыл бұрын
@vexew I love BotW for the reason you apparently dislike it. The amount of exploration and the variety of things you can find absolutely anywhere on the map, sometimes in really innocuous looking areas. There's so much unique stuff to find, so many missions or other things to do, so many cool items like the specific armours that protect you from elemental attacks or that phantom armour that boosts your attack and defense massively and makes fighting guardians a breeze, and just random little characters that other players might never know exist but you bump into them and get a sort of mini story, like when you bump into that woman in the cabin in the snowy mountains and suddenly you're playing a snowboarding game zooming down the mountains You can just pick a direction, any direction, and set off walking that way and you'll always bump into something cool and unique. And there's so many things like special weapons to find that again many players might never see but you happen to maybe by lucky chance. And so many areas that are completely unique and have a whole different set of rules to play by, like that forest in pitch darkness. BotW just seems to have so little filler. Everything in it is, I dunno, chunky, meaty, feels like a real cool thing, I dunno how to explain it. The opposite of filler basically. I usually hate games like these, like I hate Fallout 3 and 4, they just drive me a bit nuts. But BotW isn't like those at all. I would absolutely hate for all important items to only be available through random enemy and pot drops. That just seems like a recipe for great annoyance. Speedrunners would loathe it I'm sure. The best games of these kind, like the zelda and the metroids, have specific areas for important items for a reason. If everything is just random, someone might pick up everything within the first 10 minutes and ruin any challenge the game might have had. Or the reverse, a player might get none of the important items until the end or maybe not at all, and have to spend hours mining enemies before the end boss hoping the enemies drop the all important items. No. Eww. Seems like a really bad idea in anything except a rogue like If you want a roguelike style Zelda, go play Cadence of Hyrule on the Switch. But I think most fans of games like zelda and metroid aren't fans of randomizers. It's a kinda niche thing, once you've already played the game to death and want a new challenge.
@FelOld3 жыл бұрын
For me Alttp is the best Zelda ever.
@foodice113 жыл бұрын
@@mattzilla331 Yeah, random would be completely detrimental. But just having them in set places where the item isn't required, like say the thundra plateau, would feel very special. You feel like you found a secret that not just anyone can find. Korok seed and weapons are nice to find too, but everyone will find those no matter where they go. Weapons are all... Weapons. It doesn't feel like you have created some rare toolkit for traversing the world.

That last bit is so damn true. I have a less than favorable opinion of Twilight Princess for being too formulaic with little innovation, but others love it for being the pinnacle of the formula. I love Alttp for setting the formula, but you have a less favorable view because of how much the series expanded from there. Who's to say either view is right or wrong? At the end of the day, this franchise has meant so much to so many that most any game can be strongly argued to be the best or worst with valid points all around. Very few series inspire the kind of consistent passion as Zelda across generations of gamers. It's been great to see so much of it through the eyes of a younger gamer and find myself agreeing with criticisms of some of my favorite games and praise for the ones I'm less fond of. That little montage at the end was great by the way. Makes me want to go dust off a bunch of old games and consoles.

Meanwhile, i only care if a game overall is good and can stand the test of time. I can't go back to A Link to The Past because it feels like a Zelda SNES demo in comparison to other 3D zeldas. I don't care if Twilight Princess follows a formula because it's a love letter to fans of A Link To The Past, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. And the formulaic thing is something that doesn't make sense if nobody says that Ocarina of Time was basically A Link To The Past in 3D. I predict that Breath of The Wild will be a Wii U tech demo in comparison to the sequel.

@@saricubra2867 Oot was essentially Alttp in 3d in terms of overall structure. It largely gets a pass for that because of the massive innovation of moving the series to 3d and helping shape 3d gaming as a whole. I don't dislike Twilight Princess, I just find the formulaic nature dissapointing because of how innovative Zelda games tend to be. Twilight Princess felt like Oot 2.0, it didn't really bring anything new to the series beyond expanding horseback combat. It was by far the most fully realized incarnation of the formula, but it was always the creativity and innovation that made me love Zelda. That each new entry could bring something new to the table while still being fundamentally Zelda. On the other hand, these innovations could turn people off. The sailing in WW, the motion controls in SS, the...everything in MM. TP being essentially a greatest hits of prior concepts leaves it with few polarizing elements and makes it the strongest overall take. Which is why I personally find it to be the least interesting 3d game but not one that I could ever call bad. It felt like a traditional sequel in the vein of any other series, bigger and better rather than the wellspring of creativity I always knew the franchise as.

While I'm sure that this has already been said far more succinctly and elegantly, I'd just like to say thank you for all of the hard work and dedication you've put into to this retrospective series. Tangent Warning: I had fallen out of gaming for almost a decade following my early college years and have only really recently been able to replay all of my old Nintendo favorites. The Legend of Zelda was a favorite of mine, but Ocarina of Time was always my "one that got a way." I was only ever able to play through the first couple hours on buddy's N64 as a kid which made for an easy decision on where to start playing & collecting back in late 2016. A friend had recommended your OOT retrospective around that time as well and I've since had the pleasure of playing through the Zelda series in it's entirety along with your video releases (with a few omissions based on hardware and/or game availability). Suffice it to say, it's been a wild ride with ups (defeating Ganon with a bottle) and downs (for god's sake HURRY UP, Dampe) and just a little backtracking here and there. Your thoughtful and excellently crafted retrospectives have really helped me to meditate on and appreciate the little intricacies of the series. They became an integral part of my overall appreciation of the Zelda franchise and, while I am sad to see this series coming to a close, I can't understate my appreciation for all your efforts putting this series together and I'm very excited to see what series you'll focus that creative potential on next. I liked this game, it was really fun. But when i reached the last dungeon it was kinda dissapointing how short the adventure was considering how much fun i was having. I understand people want a game with nonlinearity because of a sense of freedom it provides them, but if the game doesn't compensate for this freedom by either having a fixed high difficulty that you can master (kinda like Mega Man) to make thing easier for yourself, or a progressive dificulty that evolves with you (Like Prinny) then a more linear game that has scaling dificulty is better without a doubt. I prefer Alttp in the end because despite it being a little more scripted, it challenges you consistently even when you get better equipment because the game was designed that way.
@mattzilla3314 жыл бұрын
I love both formulas. Open worlds are nice. But i hope the next zelda game is more linear. I definitely appreciate the scaling up that naturally happens. My problem with between worlds is the dungeons didn't get harder. In a link to the past they clearly get harder.
@firebert954 жыл бұрын
The difficult scaling for this game is pretty non-existent. I remember gearing up to fight the final boss with faires in every bottle and I don't know if I even used one! Underwhelming for certain. Are there videogames that use this non-linear format and as you progress through the game it either makes the enemies more powerful or limits your own character in some way? Like I wonder if that could ever be explored in a Zelda game after beating each dungeon all enemies get buffed or you as the hero gets punished in some way? Like maybe a reverse heart containers mechanic where you start with a lot and have to sacrifice a heart after each boss or you lose the item that is tied to that dungeon. I think a game like that would be really interesting!
@mattzilla3314 жыл бұрын
@Craig Adams considering technology limitations and the fact this is only the 3rd zelda game they knocked it out of the park. The game isn't perfect but I have a hard time understanding these types of criticisms. Of course there's room for improvement. Its like being used to the CGI work in a modern marvel movie. Then watching a sci fi movie from the 80s and being like damn this movie sucks even though at the time it was a masterpiece. Doesn't make sense to me. The new games begin better (as they should be!) don't take away from the older ones.

I have a weird relation with this game. ALttP is one of my favorites because of the awe that inspired my younger self, it was my first adventure. It's not my favorite Zelda, but I hold it dearly in my heart and it's the one I finished the most and with the most hours in it, probably. But I just don't like ALBW. It was the first Zelda game that disappointed me. I've been trying to understand why. It's not because I'm tired of this Hyrule because I loved to play the Satella View sequel, Ancient Stone Tablets in the same map and visual style. And I LOVE the references Four Swords Adventure makes and even using the same sprites sometimes. I guess it's just the item rental system. It kills the wonder of discovery and the Maimais kill the fantasy of finding a secret being capable of granting wishes, because they're almost mandatory. And I think that's the aspects I love the most in Zelda games. BUT I don't reaaaaally know. I just couldn't like the game. And I'm not trying to be the smartass, I swear, but as soon as I saw Ravio in Link's house wearing a pink bunny outfit (Link's appearance on the Dark World from aLttP), I knew the guy was Link from the Dark World. It was really set up to be a surprise reveal and that's what made me call it so soon. Maybe the game was too predictable to me because I played the original so much? I don't really know. its great to see that no matter the differences, the demographic, political, cultural, ethical diversity in mankind, we all can agree on one thing the baseball minigame sucks

I hope you cover more of the zelda games. I really like your review format and while i've never played any legend of zelda games and thanks to you i plan on playing some of them.

It would be awesome if he got to cover more Zelda-like games, like Okami, Alundra, Beyond Oasis, For the Frog the Bell Tolls and the like.

I often play these zelda retrospectives while on 3-4 hour car rides. While I was hoping for more, as a fellow creative I completely understand the sense of drainage you refer to. You’ve given us more than plenty. Thanks for the wonderful videos, and we’ll be here whenever you decide to continue. I’m sure re explaining concepts like you say is redundant as hell. We’ll be here for your other vids of course lol. Enjoy your break from the series! Much love

It's sad to see that under this open concept, a lot of the puzzles suffered.

While that's true, the wall merging went a long way in compensating for it. The way you view virtually every area changes completely, creating a unique experience that no prior Zelda had anything like.

Just like Breath of The Wild.

@@zeroattentiongaming820 The wall merging was fun, but I didn't like how it became the mechanic of EVERY dungeon, rather than a mechanic in one dungeon. It was used the exact same way nearly everytime (how do I get to this ledge? Maybe I can merge with the wall to get to it). And yes, I think Breath also suffered in the puzzle department, though to me it made up for it with a better overworld. generally I play Zelda for the dungeons and while both Breath and ALBW were just lesser in the dungeon department (I don't agree with KingK in regards to comparing ALTTP's and ALBW's dungeons), Breath compensated with an incredible overworld.

@@Thirteen13551355 Fair point, no other Zelda leaned so hard on its core gimmick. Well apart from Skyward Sword but that's a case of the gimmick being omnipresent on a control level. Can there really be a good compromise between linearity and open design? Linearity gives us well designed dungeons that can take full advantage of everything a player will have at that point where an open design allows for an unmatched sense of freedom and discovery. The core strengths of the two designs are fundamentally opposed in such a way that I can't see a compromise that doesn't dramatically weaken one or both aspects to make it work.

We need a 3D Zelda with this particular open world formula, it actually feels like proper progression unlike BotW and TotK
@user-be3qc7re9o11 ай бұрын
BOTW and TOTK are that progression as they are going off of the base set by ZELDA 1. This game does progress as well, but it's largely basing it off of the linear design and framework that was established in A Link to the Past.
