Well that was another tough day on the Rim. Randy really did not want us having any down time. Now we have to find out how many of our colonists are... well actually our colonists. I really hope it's not the medic or we are doomed.

Curiously, Burc asked mommy: "Why does Dumbshit always eat the human meat? And we eat only the animals?" Her mommy sighed. Once she had told Burc that sometimes, Burc asked "weird questions". Whatever that meant. And then she had sighed just like that. Mommy looked at Burc and said: "Because Dumbshit likes that meat best and we are humans. Humans don't eat human meat." Burc tilted her head to one side. "But why not?" Mommy shrugged. "It is just not done, my dear." Frowning, Burc asked: "But why? Why is it ok for Dumbshit to eat it but not us? I mean, you are wearing a nice human leather necklace. It's really pretty. If we kill them, shouldn't we use their leather AND all their meat? Just like with the animals?" Mommy seemed to think for a moment before replying: "You mean you think it gives their death some sense if their bodies feed all of us, not just Dumbshit?" Burc nodded vigorously. "More sense than just making them explode like Uncle Filip did the other day. What good did that do anyone?" Her mommy was silent for a while longer, and then she asked: "Burc, did you try human meat?" Burc looked at the floor. Then at the ceiling. Everywhere but in mommys eyes. Why did mommy have to ask this question? Now Burc was in trouble. Maybe. Defiantly, Burc looked up and told mommy: "I did. Dumbshit always makes these yummy yummy noises when he eats it and I wanted to try." Her mom crouched down and then looked Burc straight in the eyes. Then she asked: "And did you like it?" Burc nodded. Meekly, she answered: "It was really yummy, mommy." Mommy closed her eyes for a moment and then looked back at Burc. Then she smiled. Burc sighed in relief. Mommy was not mad at her. She hated it when mommy got mad. Although she mostly got mad at Uncle Smerk. Instead, mommy hugged Burc and said: "Do me one favour, ok, baby? I will tell auntie Pseudonym to cook some meals with human meat in them for you, okay? Can you not eat it raw like Dumbshit? His stomach can handle that, but you might get sick." Burc grinned and furiously hugged mommy back. "I will not eat it raw anymore, I swear." Burc knew she just had the best mommy in the whole world. (Totally not me making a plead for the cannibal trait ... 😉)

The game just decides it's time for you to get Metal Horrors and then retcons an excuse for how it got into your colony. I had a case where a 3 year old born at the colony was the source, having been "infected before she joined your colony". Rimworld. :P

Consider going into the mechinator tree. There is a paramedic mech in this tree that cannot be affected with metalhorror, so it never lies when doing surgical inspections

About the metalhorror. You missed a crucial thing and that is interrogating. You are not supposed to wait until you have 3 flesh samples if you have narrowed the possible infected. You should imprison who you think is infected and interrogate them. This will catch the metalhorror and has a lot higher success rate than waiting until you find all flesh samples and your whole colony is infected (about that, metalhorror can infect more people when sleeping in the same room, when one pawn feeds another one, when person gets attacked by insect). Also infected pawn isnt dead. When metalhorror emerges it doesnt kill the host, it just cuts them badly and you have to tend to them (maybe there is a chance to kill, but i had a lot of metalhorrors and they never killed the host). So please interrogate people that you think might be metalhorrors before they infect your whole colony from sleeping in the same room.

I don't think it's sleep in the same room but rather sleeping in the same bed aka couples. I had a Metal Horror in my colony for a year using a barracks without detection or spreading. The infected individual was incapable of Doctoring or Cooking and was not in a relationship. I ended up getting annoyed and saving/loading before killing my colonists one by one to figure out who it was. To my knowledge every single entity + insects has the chance of passing on the Metal Horror infection upon wounding a pawn. (ghouls are immune). Known methods of Metal Horror infection. 1. Wounds from Anomalies/Insects. 2. Surgery performed by someone infected. 3. Being fed a meal by someone who is infected (beware wardens). 4. Sharing a Double Bed with an infected. 5. Social Fights with an infected. Questionable source. 1. Cooked meals from an infected.

@@bahhumbug2072 I can confirm that it is most propably possible to infect by barracks. Ive had metalhorror spread that way. It was a new person who got temporarily assigned to the same room as another pawn and ended up infecting him. He may have fed him a meal but the possibility of that is really low. My bet is that there is a small chance of infection when sleeping in the same room and its all up to luck.

An interesting way to detect the metal flesh is to unties the fact they always lie, for example ,your prisoner most likely have contracted the parasite already. You can let doctors preform inspection on him after you have discovered the bio signiture. If the doctor reports that they are healthy , they very likely have been infected. And let multiple doctors all work on the prisoner taking turns , and noting down the sequence to know who can be trusted is important. If your first doctor finds sign of infection , let the rest two operate and see who lies. If the first round no one reported infection , but when you go around for the second round the doctor caught it have infection , you would know one of the other two doctor have been compromised and you can surgical inspect them with the trusted doctor.

Good job beating robots with zombies. Truly, Rimworld is weirder than you expect, even you try to account for it being weirder than you expect. For ritual effectiveness, what matters are the following: 1) the psychic sensitivity of the one leading the ritual, 2) the number of chanters, up to 4 (nothing about the individual chanters, including psychic sensitivity, matters), 3) the number of shard beacons near the ritual site, up to 4. You can build these (click on the Anomaly tab or the ritual circle for the option) and each costs, unsurprisingly a shard to construct, 4) the number and quality of void sculptures near the ritual site, up to 6. They're small statues made of bioferrite. Artists can craft them like normal. Great play so far, Francis. Happy gaming!

The initial infection is an event and completely random. The game finds appropriate flavor text for the infection like art. It doesn’t actually matter what it says they got infected by expect the cooking/surgery. Enemies don’t give it to you the game is just giving flavor text

I cannot be the only one who noticed that absolute unit of a shambler "Crink Todd" at 12:32 be the first shambler to start wailing ineffectually, but ferociously at the centipede. I imagine him crawling all over the centipede and like biting out some circuits as he electrocutes himself. And then he chews, spits out the wires, utterly enraged that it isn't meat. Vicious clawing and biting ensues, followed by the centipede having its inner workings clogged by shambler parts like a deer does to an engine (poor hypothetical deer) when a car hits one. Metal AF, Crink Todd.

One very good precept is child labour: discouraged, it gives kids ability to fill up learning need 20% faster, so they have more time to work. Clarification, it only has negative mood if you assign work hours to children in schedule, and with a bit of micromanagement and drugs on a first day, i was able to get max tier education while using 600% ageing all the time. but to be fair it dose leave a very small room for error.

Draw animals can be used as a slightly delayed animal pulser, but it requires really bad ritual quality instead of good to get the desired manhunters

Shamplers, are something to behold in this game, taking down the scythers and rushing the centipedes, crashing against them, flesh and bones against metal, they didnt realy do any damage to them, more like guts and bones stuck inside their joints. I had about 50+ shamplers passing by the south of my colony, they needed 3 days to fall and more to reach the other side of the map, I wanted to clear them out without the involvement of my colonists personal interaction and I know from past experiences that mortars and man made fire will only aggro them towards my colony, conveniently they went near and into a big room, that I left it's door open, on the path to my kill box filled with corpses and with a dead life trap in the middle next to a chair, as they triggered the trap, it exploded, filling the room with dead life particles, corpses squirmed and started to rise, the carnage starts, now they are locked in a death reanimate cycle. Earlier, I summoned the Apocriton, hoping it would clash with the horde, it came with its horde of militors, scythers and a Diabolus, as soon as they came near they started shooting the shamplers and them rushing the mechanoids, scythers and militors mowing them down, Diabolus hellspher canon all, shamplers and mechs alike, Apocriton jumping around raising falling mechs, shamplers rising again with the help of my mortar delivered dead life loads. In the end all thats left 8 shamplers against the Diabolus, 7 of them rushed it and the 8th crawled with one hand towards it, flesh and bones crashing against metal, flame burst ignites all, they didn't stop, Diabolus confused starts retreating repositioning to use its canon, firing missing then flame burst again, this went for awhile, all shamplers went down, not knowing what to do at this point, it starts to shoot holes through my walls, that when I sent my ghouls and put it down.

RE: Tox Grenades. One possible use is in your usual grenade tactics. If you are lobbing tox nades out a doorway, with a blocker (possible with tox immunity) in the doorway, the raids will all stack up in the gas. Frags might be more effective but tox would probably allow you to take more prisoners in that situation.

The problem with tox grenades, they have to be in the gas for hours before it has any noticeable effect, in other words, tox grenades are garbage.

Every time I've tried this, using many different kill boxes together with the tried and true grenade mechanics and cherry-picked test-pawns, tox grenades were barely noticable in having any effects. By the time the toxicity rose to medium levels (one up from "initial", where the pawns start to have any exploitable decrease in cognitive and motor functions), the skirmish was over. Tox IEDs in a burn-hall (without the burning), however, has a much higher effect, if vents are used (as they disperse gases through to the other side, unlike walls where it's just visual, and not an actual effect going through). A long enough trek through the gas before going in melee with a blocker leaves the enemies closer to medium, or higher, toxicity, giving a lot more prisoners than (atleast in my testing) a regular grenade "wall".

@@xenomemphate my testing was also based on the same theory, as I had the same mental image of what would happen. And after Francis mentioned something like it in one of the first BioTech episodes, I hit pause and booted up the game. Spent about 3-4 hours running several scenarios. So unless tox grenades (or tox gas in general) has been changed since BioTech's release, it should still hold true. (Please hold true, I don't want to go through that again 🤣 ) Edit: and, if you'd like some different playstyles for Rim, I'd recommend checking out AdamvsEverything and Rhadamant. Both great Rim players, with vastly different styles from each other, and from FJ. My three favorites when it comes to Rim content

Just in case no one mentioned it. The obelisk has a toggle to auto supress, when it shows up its default off. I would probably tick that on. You may want to turn it off when you want people to stay closer to base

About the trees - wall them in, but make sure to not cover the tree (Don't want it getting cut down) and the corpses under a roof tile should be file. That's what I noticed when got a Death Pall. Also... There's a 'Bliss Lobotomy' to add to the standard Yunners. 🤣

A brilliant idea I heard someone suggest: Have a medic robot medically inspect everyone! Before the 3rd flesh sample, it might be wise to have everyone eating paste, tending their own wounds where possible (or just using the medical robot), and not do lovin'

Turns out you can't detect a metal horror with inspections until you analyse enough flesh samples. Though I think you can find them early with interrogations.

Metalhorrors don't *necessarily* kill your colonists when they emerge. They leave them bleeding out and this can insta-kill already injured colonists, the elderly, etc., but if you're fast (and not too many are infected) you can save everyone. Since you were mentioning ghoul implants, a nuclear stomach and a stoneskin implant are great additions to ghouls IMO (if you don't put them into your non-ghoul colonists)

I'm a bit late on watching this episode, but I found my first Metalhorror really easy. We only had 1 new person - a kid - join the colony for a year or so, and when the first piece of grey flesh was noticed, it was *under the kid's feet*! So I suspected that kid the whole time and imprisoned them, then all the flesh pieces were in the prison cell so I was sure. One medical inspection later, a bit of shooting and screaming, and lots of mopping up blood, and everything was fine!

Metal horrors are very easy to deal with if you pay close attention to where the grey flesh drops. It makes it a lot easier to ID the infected. Fortunately, if you do a surgical inspection fast enough, you can save the colonist. I've never had a full outbreak because I go with separate bedrooms very early which means cross-infection is unlikely. (Especially since I stop cooking and fall back on my stockpile of survival meals or nutrient paste.)

As far as the Metal Horror suspects go, I think it's likely to be Brandon. When the flesh sample 2 was found, he had JUST been walking there on his way down the map. Pseudonym was too far away as well as walking towards it, and Nomad was even further away and walking parallel to it, returning to the base. He'd be my prime suspect if it were in my game 😉

You should use the void provocation ritual and activate the obelisk further. Most fun stuff happens only after you do that and trust me that some of the anomalies are incredible to go against.

my first warp obelisk was a tribal run. It accidentaly activated without even studying (so no option for reinforcements) Warped Wombat (6 shooting, 0 medical) in a rags with only recurve bow to the room with shambler in marine armor. Shambler dropped chain shotgun at begining of fight to even out chances. It was fun battle. Also loot value in this maze is incredible.

Her last group were studying another obelisk with it, when she got her scars. She jolted awake and rubbed her scars. "Damn, late for dinner." Nomad headed inside. The obelisk flashed again minutes later.

Metal horrors can be passed to a colonist from a void entity (so far I’ve had it infect a colonist from a sight stealer in melee). They can also show up in newly arrived colonists.

my money is on Nomad or Filip, Nomad could have picked it up during his work with the empire, and Filip is new and was there when the flesh spawned, and so far, it's always been the closest person for me, granted every metal horror I've encountered has been a prisoner.

Francis, that prisoner is a PRIME ghoul candidate. Nimble makes them nearly invincible, the tentacle makes them hit harder and you get some plating and armorskin glands and boom. Ghoul with high armor, damage and hard to hit in melee

Better yet, those tentacles are decent melee weapons, DRASTICALLY improving melee DPS. Having good melee bionics/flesh tentacles is the difference between capping out at 5 DPS and 20 DPS. I suspect that the best DPS would be from one bionic arm (for manipulation) plus one power claw (for damage), but one flesh whip and one flesh tentacle would be much cheaper.

Ghouls can have normal bionics installed and those bionics benefit from the ghoul's regeneration. Note that Ghoul implants don't require medicine, but normal bionics do

@TW-qw5zr As I make Ghampires, I get the fast runner gene on them, which mitigates the loss. My ghamps(I need a better name), were one shotting body parts. Not remotely good for capturing pawns, though.

@Grazui They don't jump, coagulate, or have any ability that uses hemogen, but they do gain robust, improved melee strength and fast runner. They are not afraid of fire, require no blood or deathrest, and do regenerate fatal wounds. Had one have a liver shot out. They entered involuntary deathrest, and they regenerated the liver. They seem to be a true hybrid cross of vampire and ghoul. The nicest part is that it is an all-in-one package that can be made without getting xenogenetics and finding genes.

When Nomad showed up, he came with instructions that stated "this guy adores vampires" I believe he only came because you accepted a quest that gave you the vampire that turned Peshet. Some concrete tips about metalhorrors: - How do they get into the colony: As other commenters mentioned, when the storyteller decides it is metalhorror time, it picks a colonist that could have been infected (basically, anyone who is not one of the original three - or anyone who has been hurt by an anomaly. So anyone), and infects them. Nothing you can do on that front. The colonist having been around for ages will not free them from this fate. - How to detect metal horrors: Metal horrors can be detected by operation (after finding three flesh), by interrogating prisoners (takes some time - In a colony I discovered a prisoner after a social 12 warden interrogated them for 4 days), or by killing the pawn. Operation / killing reveal the metal horror. Interrogation let's you know the infected person, but does not reveal the metal horror yet (you reveal them by operating after the interrogation). When you reveal a metal horror, all metal horror will spawn. Infected pawns take a nasty cut wound, but don't immediately die. Keep DS at hand. - Hint: you found the flesh inside the anomaly room, so it very likely infected one of your anomaly researchers (or someone who decided to clean that room).

Ive got a lot of metalhorrors and interrogation reveals the metalhorror. Ive caught them only through this method and they always attavked right after getting found out by interrogation.

My metal horror started after the first mist event that reanimates corpses. I thought it was the new addition to the team I got just before that, but the second lump of gray flesh I found, which allowed me to start surgeries, it was in the crafting room. Only the dedicated crafter ever enters there, so I sliced him open, without interrogation or anything, and indeed. It was a pawn I started the colony with, tribal start so the monolith wasn't active, so I believe it's exposure to the gray mist thing that causes metal horrors.

Didn't finished watching yet, but: obelisk thingy has red bright text saying that auto suppresion isn't turned on. And right to the word "activity" there is an icon with hand and red cross. I assume it toggles auto suppresion. Should probably toggle it

Warmachine living up to their name. They really wanted to go out to the machines and wage war.. I've been dreading the metal horror thing for ages. I've never actually seen the event, but i've heard of it, and somehow it's the only thing i've managed to avoid. I've had all the other events. It might be an idea to lock up Nomad and start interrogating them, if you really suspect them?

You only mean one or two, right? Right? Brainstorming on how to deal with imposters: Turn the new recruits into ghouls. I *think* that ghouls are immune to normal health conditions, and can't do any tasks, so they shouldn't be eligible as imposters. If you guess wrong and Preshet is the imposter, having extra ghouls will help the kids survive the fallout. If you end up with too many ghouls to feed... kill the extra ghouls, dump them in the freezer, and resurrect them when you need them/can feed them.

You can use the mod "Quality Builder" so only your best crafter will build items that have a construction quality to them. So your production specialist (so long as he has the highest) would do the actualy building of such things so you get the best quality. you can also set the qualty of the item. So let's say you want at least Mastercraft bed, if they make it and it is less than mastercraft they wlll auto-tear it down and try again until it is a mastercrafted one.

The psychic rituals have their quality boosted by up to six neardby void vculptures and up to four shard beacons. With max of these and all the void sculptures being legendary, it boosts ritual quality by 62%. Also ceremonial hoods and ritual masks boost psychic ritual quality, but I don't have exact numbers.

I've found using barracks to have saved me with the metal horrors a couple of times. The thing bursts out, one time two of them but its most likely to happen in the barracks where they are surrounded by everyone else to shoot it down fast.

The next update is supposed to replaced the wood from harbinger trees with bioferrite. I'm not sure what's the exact math on this but I'm almost positive this makes the draw shambler ritual bioferrite positive.

use a mech healer serum on your doctor. if they have metal horror, it's definitely the worst condition they have. if it heals something else or does nothing, doesn't matter - either way you know the doc is clean to start giving inspections without spreading it.

From what i read about he metalhorror is if you use him to tend other pawns he will heal wounds that cannot be healed by normal means but thus allowing him to spread the horrors. With the meme Pain is Virtue this metalhorror mite be a party ritual for all we know!?

I haven't finished the episode yet, but just to be sure I don't miss anything: -Colonists can be infected with the metal horrors by being attacked by the fleshbeasts (attacks that actually penetrate skin) -the location where you find the flesh can give clues as to who might be infected (kitchen ->cook, lab ->researcher etc) -the mechanitor medic bots will NEVER lie about the results! -You can automatically suppress monoliths by clicking the "hand" icon just above the activity meter. -When the warped obelisk does it's thing: look out for ALL scribbles on the floor, strip EVERY corpse for food and micro manage the affected pawn hard. Also sidenote, I had three metal horror infection rounds before I got decent armor. I never lost a colonist or the colony since the metal horror emergence isn't fatal and in most cases leaves the affected colonist able to fight back to some extent. Turrets will help here. I've now spent around 30 hours in my anomaly colony, the metal horrors and nociosphere were by far the most dangerous things though.

It always worries me, when you use proxies to fight for you, that you do not help your proxies. I believe in most cases your situation would be improved with a few potshots at your enemies. Like while the ghouls are completely surrounding the centipedes, it would have been very effective to help them. And you can do it with minimal risk. It is still entertaining to watch your videos of course, I am just pointing out a weakness you got.

Every time I have tried to assist hostile proxies it has usually gone badly. One time a ancient solider I awoke from an ancient danger was having a shoot out with a Centipede. The moment my colonists head came around the corner both of them called a truce and tried to smoke my people. I let them fight and then pick off the winners, far safer if you have a kill area to fall back to.

If you are ground targeting the grenades, then you can rotate the entrance 90 degrees. So the enemies don't have line of sight until they're already in the box.

I have tried that before but then the enemies have less distance to travel in the grenade area. I much prefer them to have to travel at least 5 tiles through a grenade box :)

I had this and waited for 2-3 to drop analyzed it and was able to identify the strain the put the ENTIRE colony under the knife. Once the one or many are found the best pops like a flesh burster but the pawn was slightly injured but fine after the inspection was completed

Burc: Mommy is always drinking people juice. Why not just eat the people instead? Seems like a lot of extra silly work to keep that prisoner lady around just to put their juice in those bags for mommy. Why not just eat her? Uncle Dumbshit seems to like it, and everyone else takes the time to chop up the bad folks who show up for him. And he's always big and strong even after he gets beat and shot up. So there can't be anything wrong with just eating the people meat. It would be kinda cool to sit down and eat with Uncle Dumbshit when we he babysits me too. I'm just saying. Sanguine is the easy boring pick. Cannibal is just the better themed choice for a whole list of reasons for this file. Plus the specific bonuses of Cannibal make it really just a slightly different version of psychopath. It just checks all the boxes for this run and this pawn in particular from a story perspective.

@FrancisJohnYT Once again, I give you this advice, try it when you've done the occult research "Boss, maybe for one time I can help you: -Make a big fat corpse stockage at the entrance of your killbox. -Create a mortar that can shoot at it and a few ressurection obuses(edit:shells I guess, my english is bad). -Become the king of the deads PS:The undead you raise don't attack you, they can use your doors but they won't if the door is forbidden like your other colonists. Resurrection Mines also work but they are less cost efficient. It works with any corpse, even entities corpses." Good luck and thank you for all the tricks you teached me, in Rim as in ONI. You can further improve ritual quality with void statues and the shard link thingies - additionally, it is good to note that bioferrite gear gives both a psy sensitivity and neural heat bonus

Not to give spoilers, but I would highly recommend thick outer walls, sooner rather than later. Though, you seem to be having a few other issues right now. That was a sod of a Randy roll for your current wealth level. Nice job on clearing them. I remember you saying you wanted more of a challenge on the next Rimworld run. The metal horror thing will probably not be as bad as you think. Also, the information given currently by the game is incomplete. I have actually considered a small second base with just a medic in it. Keep very low wealth and just act as a backup doctor/miner that can be brought back if needs. Cryptosleep seems a viable option too.
