@industrialpalletworx35488 ай бұрын
@user-rn8hl3ll1y there are 3 ways you could go there that I know of. Either join the USAF who does the job now or apply to work for one of the support companies or you could pay to take a cruise there. Russia used to have ships that would pull into port at McMurdo Station. The Coast Guard ice cutter comes through to break up the summer ice.
@michaelhoffmann28918 ай бұрын
@@industrialpalletworx3548 Is it AF now? Was ANG when I went in 2003, who took over from Navy. I doubt Russian cruises are currently allowed at McM 😆 Of course, the "main" way, the "intended" method, is to go as part of a scientific research project. Everything there is merely a base to facilitate science. It obviously has nothing whatsoever to do with strategic goals to lay claims for when the Treaty expires, no sir, not at all!

How was the COVID-19 situation down when you were there? What type of restrictions where there?
@a_legitimate_salvage2 жыл бұрын
There is a tiered system using color codes. Red is a case on station, and basically means full lock down. Yellow is when new people have arrived within 7 days. Masks, physical distancing, and limited capacities in most indoor spaces. Yellow sucks. Blue is masks but nodistancing and I still dont really understand what conditions allow for level blue, or how it makes any sense. Green is no restrictions at all. Ingot back to the states 2 weeks ago and I miss it already. When I first arrived on station we were in yellow for about a month. There was one day of Green thanks to divine intervention and a flight delay and the "Green Party" that took place that night will go down in history.

Why would they need an ATM! It's funny how each country's station comes up with their own additions specific to the culture. They actually fly printed paper bills out there in 2022 like it's the 19th century, I can't stop laughing.
@JoeSpinstheGlobe2 жыл бұрын
There is a store with a variety of items (snacks, souvenirs, clothing, toiletries, alcohol). They do accept cards as payment but it requires internet which isn't quite 100% reliable. But for the most part, the bills just go in a cycle (store to finance to atm). Not a big need to fly them in all the time.
@ramdas3632 жыл бұрын
@@JoeSpinstheGlobe Hey, thanks for the explanation. There still isn't really a need though. They could just use internal NFC cards to keep tap and bill people when they leave. It's not like one can just disappear on Antarctica. And used bills do have to get replaced.
@JoeSpinstheGlobe2 жыл бұрын
Sure that would be possible, but it would also bring other problems. What if someone can't or won't pay their bill? Do you just... Not let them leave? Doesn't work, everyone comes and goes on a schedule. Also difficulties in docking pay since everyone's getting paid by a different employer Also, it's government, so they like to stick to systems that are simple, proven, and don't take specialized knowledge to run.... Even if they are antiquated.
@ramdas3632 жыл бұрын
@@JoeSpinstheGlobe Their names and employers are known. It's a bit of an absurd scenario that a researcher or engineer buys so many snacks as to financially ruin them. But if this were to happen they could also simply ask people to pay into an advance pot or freeze cash in their accounts for the duration of their stay. The NFC card was just an "old school" example btw, it could be done even cheaper by using decentralized digital currency. All people would need is an app on their phones and you could still do transactions when the internet is down, the state of the network would get updated as soon as it comes back up. ATMs are relatively complicated machines that have to be serviced by trained employees. They break down. As I said the notes do have to be replaced from time to time, else the machine wouldn't be able to recognize them anymore. It's just overkill these days, but like I said I do understand why they keep them. It's cultural.
@JoeSpinstheGlobe2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, by "systems" i meant cash, not the atm. The ATM can break down and ppl could still get cash from finance dept. And i forgot to mention that the bars in mcmurdo are also an expense, one that ppl partake in frequently (and the drink prices just went up recently to help curb consumption). You can imagine 9-12 months in a place like that, some people could run up quite a bar tab. None of what you're suggesting is infeasible; I'm just saying it adds more complexity than it solves in this situation, from the government's perspective.
