Started stacking (Finnish) domestic collectible silver coins ranging from .500 to .925. Hard to find good deals on .350 1 mark 1960s junk silvers and the Grand Duchy marks are antiques. The pages filling up look nice and silver is silver. Plus I get to buy them under the usual [premium + 24% VAT] situation going on with .999+ investment silver. With proper curation of the shopping list, I've even been hitting under melt price purchases!

I just found out that pre 1965 dimes, quarters, halves & dollar coins are 90% silver about 2 months ago. I started with wanting one of each coin for the historical value but now I’m around $80 face value & 14 troy ounces of buffalos & maple leaves. Now I’m addicted, like picking up $500 twice a week from the bank to coin roll hunt.

Back in the 70's I talked to an LCS owner and he said he would send loads of coins for melt. I asked him about the numismatic value and his answer was he was running a business with overhead and if melt was higher it was sent to melt to have cash available as soon as possible. This was at the time frame the Hunt Brothers had many selling off silver like crazy. Lines out the door with sellers.

Thanks, Speg. I've been watching Brian's videos with Vermillion for well over a year now and have been impressed with his integrity. He consistently advocates for rational approaches to stacking. No doubt because he has seen hundreds if not thousands of folks overextend because of the incessant fear and hype advanced by many PM channels and retailers. Brian is a voice of reason while bringing high levels of transparency to his buying/selling process. I'd never live in Florida but if I did, he'd get all my business.

I'd also be buying from Brian if I lived in Florida. In regard to the video; I've sold 90% U.S. pre-1965 silver coins for about 10 years now; running auctions every week. And without a doubt; the mercury dimes and walking liberties are more popular than the Roosevelt dimes and the Franklins and JFK's half dollars. I'd have to check out his prices if he has mercurys and fdr dimes the same price; I might actually be able to buy mercurys from Brian and sell them and make a little

Immediately after the California fires, I was seeing coins for sale, I swear, they had ash on them. It was tragic. Like the folks who are cashing in to pay for insurance, they sold their coins just to live. I bought a few. That's just another layer of historic.

Don't overextend yourself, that's a lesson I had to learn the hard way when I was much younger. Needless to say, I'm much more calculated with my buying decisions now, which helps me keep my silver for longer after I buy it rather than having to sell it a few weeks later to raise money for food.

It was beneficial for you to interview with this fellow. Thank you. You mention the idea when silver gets to be so high that it will go to the smelters. This brings to mind when I was fresh out of high school in 1963 working for REA. My boss come up to me and gave me a 38 special revolver telling me that I am to be a guard for a shipment of bags of silver coins going to the Denver Ment to be melted down for the 1964 Kennedy half dollars. There were heavy canvas bags of silver dimes, quarter and half dollars along with silver dollars. They were piled on skids to be put in reefer cars. If my memory is correct there at least four reefer box cars with floor covered with these skids. I tried to lift one bag. It took great effort for me to do so. My fellow works laughed saying they could see someone trying to steal this stuff running down the street. They couldn't get very far. thanks for taking time to video this. JH

I'm not really a "stacker" as such--more of a "type collector", but if I were socking away "silver for silver's sake", I might still prefer "Constitutional" just for its numismatic interest, and beyond that I might favor types where no clad variants exist to confuse matters (i.e., Mercuries vs. Roosevelts, Franklins or Walkers vs. Kennedys, and perhaps "visibly dated" Standing Liberties vs. Washingtons). A Mercury will always _look_ like old silver, even to the "unsophisticated", whereas even a pre-'65 Roosevelt too closely resembles any other humdrum clad dime.

It’s “junk” silver in that it has no numismatic value. In other words, it’s junk from a collector’s perspective. Its “only” value is its intrinsic value (from the metal content)… and that of course is the only value that matters to those of us who stack.

Personally, while I agreeing there is a "numismatic premium" on Pre-33 I don't believe that premium will ever be completely wiped out. Innately the coins have a historic value and are MS (or high AU) compared to "junk silver" which is always very worn or incredibly common. The premiums definitely did get ridiculous but have come down pretty nicely. $1950 for a $20 Lib is a great price. Only 6% premium for something in that nice a condition over 100 years later. It's not in "MS condition" because it was taken straight from the mint and encapsulated and never touched like all bullion.

My point of view on pre-65 Silver is , if you want to call it junk great , but like the Coin Dealer said if it's junk you should give it to me or throw it in the trash , because that's where junk belongs ! Basically it's a by gone description that people just can't let go of , because the value that's placed on pre-65 Silver today is huge and I firmly believe in the coming decades that " junk silver " will no longer be used as people realize it's actual value .

The problem with junk silver is that it is not marked as silver, so most people will not know or believe it has more value than face value, very risky for barder or shtf scinerios, ask some random person what a silver dime is worth and your answer will be 10cents almost every time

Of you can be good at quickly knowing and learning how to quickly buy small amounts of silver I think I would imho that is.. be kind of def buying if I had a store nearby that I know sells just pre 65 coins. Especially for timing as a hobby.. kind of like how I like to do with copper hence I well and for just for ig sentiment or sentimental value ig fwiw of one gallon ziploc bag of bare copper wire in my room fwiw just like back when I was doing at random every occasional not often but ueah scrapping of sutff.

One thing I don't understand. The supply of gold and silver bullion is not limited. I'm reminded of the old Jay Leno Cheetos commercial where he says "Crunch all you want, we'll make more." Meanwhile the supply of 60-120 year old gold and silver coins is finite. Even in junk grade, there are people like myself who are willing to buy certain coin types or dates when we can afford it even if we get a tiny amount less precious metal than for collectable grades or standard bullion. Also in a crisis, the government may once again decide to ban private ownership of bullion whereas they can't ban actual legal tender coins. Furthermore, for anyone wanting fractional coinage for barter or whatever, the premiums on old dimes or quarters are generally much cheaper than 1/4 or 1/2 oz bullion items. So if the price of either metal was to shoot way up, I get it that the general public would be wanting to buy bullion because they know virtually nothing about junk coinage. But after those sales had been made, wouldn't there still be other stackers who were eager to buy junk coinage at a low premium just above melt? Why wouldn't a dealer choose to send his unsold non-collectable and replaceable bullion to the melt before sending constitutional coinage? And wouldn't a melter prefer to deal with .999 fine metal instead of having to separate out the different metals in 90% configuration? Please explain.

If all stuff hits the fan you he happy you had a few rolls. I not saying stack a bunch I am say stack a few rolls .

I have a question. Why doesn't anyone call Barber Halves, quarters, and dimes junk silver? Is it because to high of a premium, too little of them out there or a combination of both?

The prices of silver has been manipulated and suppressed by several players. J.P. Morgan Bank is the largest holder of physical silver in the world, and probably the biggest manipulator of the price. The main reason it can be manipulated so easily is because the ETF, ticker symbol SLV is traded on the stock market. There are way more shares of SLV than there are ounces of physical silver to back them. J.P. Morgan Bank is the biggest US bank with trillions of dollars held in assets. They have huge stock market buying power, as you might imagine, and can drive the price of just about anything down by shorting it. What they do is technically illegal, but if you are too big to fail and too big to jail, you can get away with anything - even murder.

The dollar certainly Is rigged in my view. However There has been massive amount of silver used latly. And gold could be at a much lower price than it is temporaly. What do you think? Brian
@tonyprice2256

Yes. The USD has been rigged since 1913. It has lost at least 98% of its buying power since then. If you took all the USD cash in the world and put it all in one pile, the pile would be massive, but it would only represent about 3 - 5% of all the USD in circulation. The vast majority of our 'money' is just numbers on computer screens bouncing around electronically. All new 'money' that is created, is created out of nothing by just a few key strokes.

What if the coin has what looks like black tar covering the whole front of the coin so you can't see the date or anything else? What about the quarters you get stuck with that look like they were run over by a lawnmower? I wouldn't be asking if I hadn't come across them.

I bought a good amount of 90% at spot price from a guy that had an ad on Craigslist 4 or 5 years ago...at that time 90% was selling for spot and dealers had it just slightly over spot....why is 90% so expensive right now?

Simple supply and demand. The premiums have fallen by about 50% in the last month. With the holidays and economy, people are selling more than buying. Several months ago, people were buying more than selling. Premiums react and change much more quickly to demand than the spot price does.

It also seems to me that most people that are buying junk are holding on to it and not selling or that’s the way it seems
@ah5836

people are buying gold right now and not selling. If you're just interested in bullion gold, brand new stock is always coming on the market from mints and refiners to satisfy demand. Pre-33 gold only comes on the market when individuals decide to sell. Low supply, still good demand, prices go up, and people have a belief that pre-33 gold will retain their premiums, we will see.

I'm curious if junk silver is still worth stacking, given the current silver prices and high premiums on those coins compared to other silver coins or rounds. What are your thoughts? Thanks for sharing your expertise!
