This is interesting. As a test, I spent three months this year in Thailand and tried to live like a local person. I have friends in Thailand who gave me tricks and tips, for sure. Housing for me was 12,000 (utilities included). Unlimited internet: 1,000. Transportation was about the same: 4,000. Food was much less: 4,600, more or less, and physical training was 1,000. When I'm in Thailand I eat only Thai food, and never cook, except once a month I will splurge on a pizza or a burger. My budget includes going out with friends in my running club once a week, which is part of my food budget and part of my workout budget. I'll add some extra for drinks or sundries: 2,000. I didn't feel deprived of anything, but I didn't include regular medical. I only had traveller's medical insurance. So, all in all my budget was 24,600 THB (I'm sure it would be at least twice this amount if I was not single). I think that's workable for a retiree who lives like a local. Same same, really, although I know some Thai people who are paying 6,000 for their apartments, or they have cars, or cook a lot, which will change things. Considering their salary might be only 15,000 in total, I think they're even better than me or Ying at being economical. That's $1,025 Canadian per month, by the way, and a far cry from the $4,500 I spend in Vancouver for essentially the same lifestyle.
@ApatheticNonbuynary4 сағат бұрын
You're indeed living like a local. I splurged once a month also, but on MK restaurant instead of Pizza. I like Shabu.
@briannewton93693 сағат бұрын
@@ApatheticNonbuynary I did do that too. I guess that's comes under the splurge catagory. The place I like is 299, and I usually treat someone, so it comes out to around 1,000 with beer. It's a sundry expense. Haha!

If you stay away from the touristy areas and do not eat Western food, you can get a meal for less than $5 USD. A dish may run 50 baht or $1.47 USD, a soda for 70 cents, and a dessert for $1 USD. The minimum wage in Bangkok is $12 per day so local food must be priced cheap so locals can afford it.

Since you're paying for a separate gym membership, do you feel like you are getting value for the facilities at your condo? Would you be able to find a condo closer to your job, with fewer facilities at a price comparable to what you're paying for rent now? Your monthly income can cover all that expense?! I'm only spending 25k ~30k Bhat a month for everyday living in BKK as an expacts retiree. It is super convenient to staying in walkable distance to local supermarkets without relying on transportation every time go out shopping for food. Even though I can get my groceries delivered to my place. I still prefer pick up my own vegetables, fresh meat and dairy products. I know sometimes it coast more to cook your own food, but at least take the risk out of getting diarrhea everyday 😅

I can say you spend quite a lot for transportation, it is the price people pay for underdeveloped public transportation (in some sense it is hidden cost). 100 USD per month is more than people pay in Western Europe
@yinginthailand16 сағат бұрын
Yeah, I agree that the cost of public transportation here is quite high 💯
@GinJ133716 сағат бұрын
True, because in Western Europe there usually are monthly or yearly passes for transport in the city and they cost like 30 Euro to 50 Euro per month (and are deductible from tax usually) but I dont think this exists in Bangkok. I am currently in Bangkok and don't see it.
@yinginthailand16 сағат бұрын
They used to offer monthly before many years ago but it’s not available anymore nowadays. People here have no choices. In rush hours, those transportation are the only options.
@briannewton93695 сағат бұрын
@@yinginthailand, please don't think there must be something wrong with your transit budget. In my city in Canada, a monthly pass is 7,000 THB and so Bangkok is very cheap by comparison. Transit there is NOT underdeveloped in any way. In fact it is much cheaper and more convenient that any transit system I have used in Canadian or US cities, or even the UK. Berlin was similar to Vancouver in Canada. Only Japan is better. In my experience. 🙂

Most of my Thai friends there earn 400-600 per day, unless they work in a bar which means maybe 1200 per day. They work six days a week. One friend of mine lives alone and pays 5,500 for a small room. Most other friends live with family and everybody chips in. I hope that this is useful. There may be more accurate info on Google.

You should learn that counting the average figures is always a jaded method. Saying "double the average monthly salary" does not really say anything useful. You will never get anything truly accurate for almost any metric in the world. While this can definitely not be regarded as low or high or even above average spending... It can be quite easy to see that this is very normal spending for any normal Thai with a respectable and normal range of wage. Most Thai people would actually like jobs that pay more than this monthly amount so that they can increase their savings. For comparison I myself spend about 20 times this amount monthly so I would be an example of the higher spending range for Thai people. For the spending of this video no need to factor in erroneous figures such as the wage of a motorbike driver or anything else seen as "average," out of range, or context.

I'm sorry, but something is not right. I live in Thailand. Please do not take Ying's lifestyle as the 'average ' Thai. A vast majority of Thai cannot afford 15,000 bt on food per month. That's more than what most Thai people make in a month. Most Thai people that I know spend something like 65 bt per meal. And I challenge you to find a gym in Bangkok for 500 bt a month. Most gyms charge 200 + for a day pass. That has to be explained to me. So Ying is obviously not your average Thai girl. If you want to survive on less, don't plan to live in Bangkok. Chiang Mai or other much smaller cities are much more affordable.
