The turnbuckle probably wasn't working as well because the aluminum part was acting as an anode? I bet the steel would clean up better if you disassembled the parts and had them not touching.

Maybe, but this bath had started taking weeks to work so I think its near its end

The commercial rust removal products like this one and Evaporust work well, just expensive and as you show, a lot of volume is needed to cover the parts. Look up DIY Evaporust to find videos of someone trying a home recipe which he found work better than Evaporust. Inexpensive, washing soda, citric acid and a splash of dish soap. Dave.

Yeah I see people using citric acid a lot. Ive been using muriatic acid a bit here and there
