Most of the pre-release versions of Windows have a "time bomb", that is, that they refuse to install properly or boot after a certain date has passed. Also, most of the pre-reset builds of Longhorn are quite unstable unless you disable all of the WinFS services and/or the SideBar.

ahernandez094 I would try putting a lightweight linux into it maybe. Or windows 8.1 as its a tablet, it may fit very well. I really wanted to ms make a version of w10 that is basically the technical preview as a option when downloading it from their website or buying in a phisical store.

Kira Slith No that's actually not true, because according to Wikipedia it got an update on July 23, 2018 to build 0.4.9, and I've not tried it myself, but I'm betting it's nothing major as anything major with it seems to take YEARS!! it took them a few years just to get a USB keyboard, and mouse driver implemented.

Back in the day I ran 4051 for about six months as my daily driver (popup blocker and download manager in IE6, yaaaay!) and it was pretty good. The thing with 4074 is it gets a lot less stable when you start turning the features on, and has it's own mess of problems like not being able to create new folders out-of-the-box. Does have the neatest eye candy though, seems like an obvious build to try.

Note to Druaga: when putting Windows install disc on a flash drive, use a program like Rufus if you don't already. It's kind of complicated, but Rufus does things that actually make it boot properly. If you're sitting this machine on a LAN behind a router, the router will proxy-arp by default (unless that's been turned off), so the world won't know the MAC. Just curious. EDITED: there are dicks out there that would try and get inside your LAN by spoofing. Fair enough.

Oh man Druaga, I remember the XP days when I was rocking a Dell Dimension 2400 P4 with 512mb ram. My brother gave me a pirated LongHorn cd. Not sure where he got it but it changed my life. I never knew how beautiful an OS could look. Sure it didn’t work that well but it was an experience nonetheless. I still have that original cd. I ought to make a video installing it on period accurate hardware as well. We can corroborate our findings.

The first version in this video didn't work for me neither in VirtualBox. I couldn't even get to the setup, as soon as I started, I would get a BSOD in the VM. Now I know other people are experiencing issues with it, I might try a different Windows Longhorn version.

Stop with the myth that Arch Linux is difficult to install. The wiki has a step-by-step installation guide, so it is only hard to get it running for people that don't know how to read or follow instructions.

Hey if you are looking for an os for that laptop may I suggest installing xubuntu or reinstalling lubuntu or my personal favourite distro of Linux Arch now Arch may be a little more technical than xubuntu but I believe that you will be able to handle it the wiki has some pretty good documentation and I don't think it will give you much trouble

You should have done build 4015. I have the image and a serial number in case you can't find it anymore, and in case you're interested in testing what I believe to be the most intriguing version of Longhorn. It's basically a 50/50 mix of Vista and XP and it's horribly fantastic. BTW The "m3" stands for "milestone 3", so that really wasn't the FIRST Longhorn, but rather the 3rd one the devs thought was noteworthy.

Vista changed drastically on the way from Longhorn, dropping all work done on the successor to XP from 2001-2004 and restarting the development cycle in August of 2004. This caused a lot of problems for folks trying to develop software making use of features and APIs removed from the SDK, and shipping the DDK late to silicon manufacturers meant that a lot of peripherals wouldn’t have device drivers or poor-quality ones. They had less time to write, validate, debug, test, verify, and then go through their own release processes using alpha-level OS and dev tools so their stuff could be ready by the time Windows Vista shipped. Remember, it was still common to buy packaged software products a dozen years ago, and there’s significant lead up time to create, proof and print all the documentation, boxes, CDs and other collateral that go into fully packaged products, aka a retail boxed product. The less time you have to do those things, the more it costs you to have rush jobs done to get boxes into the distribution channel.

Computers can be real assholes, I was trying to install Zoo Tycoon 2 Ultimate Collection on my Windows 98 tower and firstly it complained about not being able to install the downloads folder and it couldnt complete. Despite that I could still attemtp to run the game which gave me a"d3dx9_32dll" is missing error.. after installing the directx 9.0c and copying the working install from my main pc still nothing. Quite annoying since I know that this machine can run it and it will work under Windows 98. I just dont want to spend all day figuring out a stupid error lol

Vista really hates cheap Geforce FX cards due to bad Nvidia drivers starting in build 5259 and stayed that way until it was fixed in Service pack 1. You should try build 5231, it should run fine on a Pentium 4 with Nvidia GPU and the older Aero UI was very cool. if you can get it running. My build was a 2.8ghz Celeron D with a Radeon 9250 AGP on an Intel motherboard.

Comin back to revisit some of your older videos again. I'm sure you've messed with these builds and done research since, But I'll add for anyone just getting into these builds, Longhorn Pre Reset build 4074 is the best build to use in terms of stability, software/ hardware support and overall "Longhornyness". You could also use Sigma OS 3.0, which is a user made version of 4074 to bring more stability and enable some hidden beta features. This one also comes activated with the timebomb removed. Stock 4074, you can remove the timebomb with NTTweaker. Make sure to google and enable proper BIOS dates for the build you're installing. Always disable AHCI.

After XP: - Windows Vista = good, fast, a whole new UI... it wasn't popular because XP was overwhelming on global scale and so manufacturers didn't give a damn about making drivers for it, the OS itself was just so damn good - Windows 7 = it's a "polished" Vista with the best support for new and older hardware and also software compatibility for applications that use older Windows versions, the least buggiest Windows version ever - Windows 8 = it's alright, the start screen is weird to use with a mouse though - Windows 8.1 (SP1) = almost good as 7 (performance wise), redesigned UI, not as buggy as the next version - Windows 10 = at the beginning, it was good as 7 if not better, but then after many updates it can be worse than an alpha/beta OS - Windows 11 = it kinda looks like Mac OS, the redesigned start menu was a miracle, but signing in with a Microsoft account just makes it a bit less usable

Only problem with that depending on the DVD drive it might not like them, and with some ISO files you have to finalize the disk for it work, and lets not mention the cost is even higher then dual layer DVD-R disc, so it kind of defeats the purpose of using a DVD-RW disc.
