Regarding the 'eight years' -- I'm willing to chalk the "dead or dying" statement up to unreliable narrator. Dude in the last ep was pretty old, and might only ever have known to begin with that everyone in the compartment *eventually* died of their injuries, and assumed it was a matter of days rather than years. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if the survivors outside the compartment were actively lied to about it by the government, and this guy has been left to languish in a naval hospital for years while his friends and family were told he died years ago. It would certainly fit with the theme of the ep.
