GBA has a decade newer tech AND actually better specs than SNES, so it's not exactly a major accomplishment. An accomplishment none the less, especially when the whole idea of "mobile gaming" at the time can be summarized into "Snake" on Nokia phones, and the Pokemon games.

13:22 - This is because of DooM's greatness. There are two armor types in the game: Blue and Green. The blue "Combat Armor" sucks up 2/3 of the damage while the "Regular", green armor only reduces 1/3 of the damage dealt to your health value. That's the reason why you get 200%, as it would be depleted so quickly. If you have a heavier protection ratio (66% of the blue armor vs 33% of the green), of course you need higher armor numbers to widsthand that increased damage deduction. However, that causes a problem with the fact that you can not pick up items when 100% or above (> Same with Health pickups). It can be strategically valuable to override a green armor with a blue one even though you might want not to when you see you have e.g. 50% armor left, but then you also just wear 1/3-deduction armor which can be deadly in boss fights. In fact, you can survive full rocket blasts with a combat armor while you might die with a green one if the RNG dashes out too high numbers when you are being hit. Back to topic: The blue armor (combat armor) that gets you to 200% so you can't pick up the green one because the green one stops at 100%. So you can not reset it with a green one when you are at 100% and above armor because offically, you have 200%. The game says 200% and thus ignores green armor, while actually it treats you like with no armor at all. The game's buggy code can't thus be "woken up" by re-calculating the armor value by picking up a green one. The helmets ("armor bonusses") ADD to the CURRENT armor you have, so you can keep the 2/3 protection with the side effect of remembering the GBA port that you actually do wear armor by poking the engine awake. On the PC, this is neat because this way it prevents you from accidently picking up a green, 1/3 damage dedcution armor over your 2/3 damage deduction blue armor by simple logic (as you are above 100% but the green one just does up to 100% and the game simply refuses to pick it up and accidently "downgrade" from the better combar armor to the weaker regular armor) Regular helmets count as 1/3 damage deduction btw. But only if the blue armor is neither replaced by a green armor OR fully depleted. So basically, as long as you have 1% of your blue armor left and pick up armor bonusses, you can upkeep your 2/3 protection despite the helmets are 1/3 in itself. Phew...
@jehru5
@jehru5 2 ай бұрын
Awesome summary of how armor works. Small correction: blue has 50% damage go to armor, not 67%.

Wow, I just found you and you seem like a really professional KZbinr. Stellar review, really great work! Entertaining AND informative :D Also, I played through Doom 2 on the GBA at least 2 times, and I never noticed the armor bug, and even the texture blur was never too obvious for me. I suppose I was just thrilled I could even play the game on the GBA :D Something you didn't mention however is the bug that once entering every new level, you automatically switch back to the next weapon. That means that in the very first level, you just have your FISTS out. Imagine playing the game for the first time. Would you even realize that you HAVE a gun? That was a really annoying bug in my opinion.

Finally, somebody who called out Doom II level design. In retrospective people often forget that levels in Doom II were frankly quite crappy at least for the half of the game, with vast unused spaces, overcomplicated mazes and cheap traps everywhere (unlike the one in Doom I, where everything was tightly interconnected and had its purpose on the map)
@LEXXPortPatrol
@LEXXPortPatrol 7 жыл бұрын
I'm so happy I'm not the only one who feels this way haha. I played Doom II for the first time this year and god it was SUCH a disappointment after blasting through 1. Doom 1 managed over the top levels in Episode 4 just fine, but Doom II went way too far

I actually felt TNT: Evilution in Final Doom was way more fun than Doom II
@SeekerLancer
@SeekerLancer 4 жыл бұрын
Doom II having inferior level design is kind of popular opinion (though Doom episode 3 is generally considered pretty lousy too). They were different games though, Doom II was the start of Doom being more about the flow of combat than mazes and that carriers over into Plutonia. The added monster variety and the utility of the super shotgun to deal with it is where Doom II really shines and it's got a lot to do with Doom's longevity.
@BogusmanTheSwagman
@BogusmanTheSwagman 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly the only thing that justifies DOOM II being as it is is the addition of the Super Shotgun, but I am not a fan of the level design, and also, OG DOOM did have levels with a ridiculous number of enemies, but those levels were less abundant than in DOOM II. DOOM II is like the Sonic 2 of the DOOM series, adds great stuff, but also brings with it quite a bit of bullshit.
@alfiehicks1
@alfiehicks1 3 жыл бұрын
@@BogusmanTheSwagman That's exactly how I feel. Both sequels introduce so many things that would become series staples, but ultimately fail to rise above their predecessors because the developers didn't know when to stop, so quality control took a major hit.
@alexh2790
@alexh2790 3 ай бұрын
Something that I dont think was mentioned in the video is that Doom 1 is clearly just a port of the earlier Jaguar version. You can tell this by the reduction in textures and where they're used, the altered level geometry, and the removed features. Doom 2, on the other hand, was built from the ground up for the GBA.

I know I'm almost a year late with this buuuuuuut it might have been because he was playing on a DS instead of an actual GBA. It wouldn't be the first GBA game that has issues with running on a DS. Megaman Battle Network 4 has a mission outright crash on you if you play the game on a DS.
@Zedek
@Zedek 5 жыл бұрын
@@Team_Orchid Wouldn't wonder if there are tricks and hacks that require the actual hardware to run properly and the DS just emulates the GBA hardware. Games (e.g. Sega MegaDrive games) often tricked the hack (no pun!) out of the console's VERY specific hardware and abused quirks only available to a very certain chip. If that certain chip is not available, you have to emulate, and as soon as you emulate, errors might happen. For example: I had a MegaDrive emulator running on my PSP as homebrew. The MegaDrive has 8 MHz main CPU (and a Z80). It runs "Road Rash" fine. Very many tricks used, but fine. On the PSP homebrew, if you set it to "accurate render", it would be laggy. The PSP ran at 333 MHz. So what the 8 MHz natively did was sloppy and laggy on 333 MHz on the PSP.

As far as I remember the GBA versions were the very first Doom games to be displayed in stores here in Germany. I was about 15 - 16 years old back then. The first time I saw Doom II on the shelf, I knew I had to try it out. At first I only rented it, but later I liked it so much that I eventually bought it. I do remember the abundance of traps and cheap enemy placements, but it was never really an issue for me. If anything it kept me to constantly be on my guard. Then again, I've always been a glutton for gaming punishment. Just those Lost Souls can go bugger themselves in the snatch. I also remember that level of detail problem. It threw me off a little bit at first, but after a while I got used to it and I ended up shrugging it off. Great video, very in-depth.

You have to bear in mind that most gba games were made for and tested on frontlit and nonlit screens. On those screens, the graininess and choppy framerate is nowhere near as visible. Also colors were tweaked to be overly saturated and bright in order to look appropriate on those screens. If you play these games on the "new and improved" backlit screens, you're going to see weird neon colors, super grainy textures and choppiness. The only games I can think of that ever looked like it belonged on a backlit screen is Max Payne, and maybe some cartoonish kid friendly games.

They really should've cleaned-up the sprite bitmaps to make them clearer on such a low-resolution screen. Yes, that would've made it look a bit more cartoonish, but if they did it right it would've been better.

I also saw some people just straight up re-ported the game to GBA, which is so funny to me! Duke Nukem Advance I haven't really played a lot of, but it seems fine from what I have! Made by the same people behind the Doom II Port, so I imaigne it'd be pretty good, just never gotten around to really trying it out yet :)

The fact that they exist at all is pretty incredible. But that said, I do think their ambition - porting the entirety of Doom 2 - was a little too much. They probably could have looked at other ways to pare it down. The fact it has features that are missing even from the Playstation port is remarkable, but seeing how frustrating dealings with the Archvile is here, maybe losing him was a good thing. Just anesthetically too, I'd rather a port with no blood than green blood.

for texture mipmap thing, i think it's not to improve performance. Concerning the resolution, walls far away with no mipmap feature will just look like noise
@LEXXPortPatrol
@LEXXPortPatrol 4 жыл бұрын
I suspect so - and I could be looking at this biased. Emulating these games, I think the extra noise the original version had worked in its favour, but had I played Doom 2 on orignal hardware maybe I would have preffered the mipmapping. Either way, turns out nowadays you can have the best of both worlds, as some fans actually made a texturepack of the GBA version of Doom 2 that made it much more in-line with the PC original.

Great review. I bought Doom 2 for GBA and it has flaws but is still an enjoyable experience. One of the biggest flaws is when you are too far a distance the enemies will freeze in place and you are unable to shoot them from far distances. I guess this was to save on memory but it sucks especially for the level where the spider mastermind and cyber demon are in this giant room in the beginning because on the pc I use to love to get them to both fire on me where they would hit each other by accident then kill each other but since there are limitations on the GBA I can't do that. I've gotten killed like 5 times because the cyber demons missiles are so fast and hard to dodge. Also, I forget what level it was but it's where you step off a small ledge into a poison floor and it activates a few tiles to rise up and you keep doing that till it creates a zig zag bridge to get a switch I believe well the first tiles are fine but the next few ones after that have the poison textures on them still and so you get hurt. Ha ha! That wasn't in the original. I've also got a glitch with the chainsaw where i switched a weapon after using it on some imps and the chainsaw sound kept on going for the entire level. Also a bit of slow down for opening doors sometimes and when there are a bunch of enemies on stage but all in all pretty fun.

I suppose when you jam so much content into a GBA cart, youre bound to get some issues, but these glitches sound funny in a weird kind of way!

You actually are able to shoot them. Just has to be with the rocket launcher or plasma. And yes, it’s a cheap advantage for the player that enemies from too far can’t move or attack.

While I consider the GBA ports passable (with 2 being objectively superior), the heavy censorship enforced by Nintendo does gnaw away quite a bit of the style and enjoyment of the games. Not to mention the D1's port's maps are based on the shitty, simplified ones of the Jaguar / 3DO port, with many textures and whole areas missing. Which is exactly why GBA Doom2 is superior, no matter that they had to use extreme LOD effects to make it run OK.
@LEXXPortPatrol
@LEXXPortPatrol 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah the censorship was kind of a bummer. Although funnily enough, in Doom 1 they forgot to censor the blood and stuff on the end cutscene so its almost like all the demons in the game have green blood and you only have red? Makes it feel more alien in a weird way?
@TDRR_Gamez
@TDRR_Gamez 6 жыл бұрын
The LOD appears to be just for saying "lol we got mipmapping on a GBA game what do you guys have?" Because Kippykip found a way to disable it and the framerate barely changed.

Why does everyone have a problem with the green blood? It is still there, it just has a different color. That is minor censorship.

The reason levels are cut up on Doom I is because they’re based on the Jaguar version, that presumably cut up levels because of memory.

It's weird how so many of these early Doom ports were based on the Jaguar version. Like it was the first console version of Doom sure but... The Jaguar, really?
@VGamingJunkieVT
@VGamingJunkieVT 6 жыл бұрын
One of the exceptions was actually the SNES version, probably because the system was too weak to just onload the Jaguar version onto. As a result, it actually had more faithful levels and the two boss monsters.

Lol, I know you're probably done covering doom 2 gba but... This channel called kippykip made a patch that makes it less bright and doesn't look as blurry in the distance, along with uncensored blood. So basically it makes it look as close as possible to the PC version, I've only seen it in videos but I plan to check it out myself.

Basically Doom II on GBA is the equivalent of Doom on the Super NES as they both seem to share the same problems. Yes, both Doom Super NES and Doom II GBA are impressive ports for what they accomplished but at the end of the day they are still piss poor especially when compared to Doom GBA and the best one of all the PS1 version. Its good thing I skipped Doom II GBA and instead played the PC version on Doom 3: BFG Edition for Xbox that includes both games and the Master Levels.

Very curious about the Audio Card on the GBA... Technically, it's newer then the SNES by far, yet the Music in SNES Doom is... well they only good thing about SNES Doom... GBA was 32bit and had a much faster CPU so... Surprising that they decided to nerf the music so badly.
@LEXXPortPatrol

It wouldn't surprise me if they put so many resoruces into the graphical side of Doom, that they just couldn't afford to do much more than just basic music processing? Either that or perhaps limited space on the cart itself?

The music chip used on the SNES was pretty state of the art at the time. I believe Sony developed it for Nintendo, and it blew Sega's sound chip out of the water. As for why they couldn't get something on par or superior on the GBA, I'm not entirely sure. Maybe to make the GBA as affordable as it was?
