The fact that the McCallisters lived in Winnetka, IL, which is not only the wealthiest suburb of Chicago (part of a collection of affluent lakefront burbs called The North Shore) but it's also one of the wealthiest towns in America. They also owned that incredible home (mansion) with incredible property taxes to match. The McCallisters were rich and I wouldn't be suprised if Mr. McCallister came from an old money family somewhere in the Midwest which gave him seed money to start up his business, worked in high finance or was an executive at a fortune 500 company Downtown. Grew up in Winnetka and knew families similar the McCallisters, despite being movie characters they weren't far off from some North Shore families in the 80's & 90's.... minus forgetting one of their kids twice going on a holiday vacation.

I remember as a kid thinking the whole idea of a family going to Europe for Christmas in 1990 (let alone one family paying for their relatives to come along) was so unbelievable. Majority of Americans weren’t going to Europe like that at the time. However, John Hughes and Chris Columbus still managed to make the overall film relatable to middle class movie goers with small touches - pizza to feed a crowd, mom telling everyone to finish the milk (avoiding being wasteful), no flashy handbags or designer clothes, no flashy cars (it’s passenger vans that pick up their brood for the airport), etc. so while there were many things that felt rich it wasn’t that gross flashiness.

They need to do a modern Home Alone with Macaulay Culkin as an adult that defends his home on the Purge night!
@MichaelLovely-mr6oh Жыл бұрын
Nah, I think that a modern "Home Alone" should be about Kevin and his wife and kids (portrayed by his real life significant other Brenda Song and their two sons) getting ready to meet up with Buzz, Jeff, Megan and Linnie with their own wives, husbands and children at their childhood home and Kevin gets to tell the story of how he fought off Harry and Marv; both when he was inadvertently left alone at home and again when he was spending his Christmas alone in New York City. Of course we should have Catherine O'Hara as Kate McAllister as it would be interesting to see Kate getting ready to see her children, her sons and daughters in-law and her grandkids as they are the source of comfort for her following Peter's death. This particular part would be a reference to the fact that Peter McAllister's actor John Heard died from a heart attack in 2017. I am thinking of casting Nathan Kress as Buzz McAllister (after Buzz had lost quite a bit of weight) and cast Miranda Cosgrove as Megan McAllister with Hilary Duff as Linnie McAllister and Timothée Chalamet as Jeff McAllister.

Knowing the area very well, lived in the district, the town of the Home Alone house is located on the Chicago north suburbs along the Lake Michigan. It's known for being highly affluent area, and coined North Shore, which spans 9 towns. There are houses like the Home Alone house, and and the houses along the Lake Michigan on these towns are even bigger, it would be easy to guess that the owners of a lake side home are multi-millionaires. There is also it being a John Hughes movie, where other classics (Uncle Buck, Ferris Bueller, The Breakfast Club) are set in the same area. Then there is Mean Girls. I remember getting invited to a home party in junior high and high school, only to get jawdropped by the sizes of the homes, and finding out what some of their dads did for a living.

I never wondered about Kevin's parents income until I saw this video. The designer part could be it with the mannequins around the house and his father kinda looked like a businessman. Also, has anyone ever wondered why that song has so many birds in the lyrics?

If the mob boss theory were true, I don't think Harry and Marv wouldn't have survived till the sequel. They would have been the Shanked in the Shower Bandits.

If the McCallisters are rich, why did Kevin's dad yelled "Kevin! You've spent $967 on room service?" at the end of the second movie?

Kevin’s brother yelled. Not his dad.

@@ellenpcwang It's absolutely his dad yelling at the end of Home Alone 2. Buzz shows the hotel bill to his father.

@@lylegardner7260I’ve known some wildly rich people (we’re talking millionaires). They are EXTREMELY cheap. How do you think they stay rich?

Any parent should be pissed if their 9 year old child spent $967 on room service without permission. 😂😂😂

A burglar alarm wouldn't be that uncommon for wealthy household but almost no one had security cameras in their personal home in 1990.

No one I knew had ever lived in a home that large. I grew up solid middle Class. I remember thinking that they were for sure rich. I’ve also seen the movie a million times and don’t remember seeing a ton of mannequins (other than a couple that he uses in the “fake party” scene to help ward off the bad guys. ) But watching it as an adult it’s obvious that both parents have corporate jobs. They have five or so kids, each kid has their own room. Plus there’s a full attic and a full basement, a family room, living room, huge kitchen, various other rooms, and every single One has either a phone, or television, or radio installed. For its time that was pretty major to have that much tech in every room. I also never got the fact that Kevin’s dad was paying for the entire trip as well. The pizzas? Yeah sure. It was his house. The vans to the airport? I guess so. But the film gives you the impression that all the adults specifically paid to sit in first class themselves so they could get a break from their kids. Kevin’s siblings (none of them) look alike, nor do they look like the parents either. Going on a trip to France during that time was so far out of the stratosphere of anyone in an average family, that it seemed totally unattainable. It’s still pretty unattainable to this day. Let alone paying for nearly twenty people to go on the trip all together. Kevin was a brat case he was the baby of the family, used to all that wealth and getting whatever he wanted by bullying his parents (whom He never saw as they were always working. ) And he obviously had been allowed to speak to them that way, or he wouldn’t have been as bad. everything he does in the beginning of the movie is all for negative attention. Instead of trying to spend time with him to see what’s going on, they push him away again to be left alone. I also think it’s trash the way the dad was never involved in his son’s life or discipline. Why should it be up to his mom to raise him by herself, and then try to get home to him by herself? His dad was a huge butthead.
