There's a lot that goes into dubbing a TV show. You have to take something made for one region, and rework it to fit into your market and culture. The changes made to dubs are often looked down upon by fans, but some dubs contain truly unique additional content that go unappreciated outside of their local audience, such as their opening theme songs. Many dubs use original theme songs made to appeal to their specific audience, such as Italy dubs featuring Eurodance songs.
In this video, we'll be going over some of the most fascinating examples of this, from countries such as Italy, Germany, France and more. There is an infinite amount of international multilanguage content out there to dive into!
Special thanks to the dubbing community. Without the work of everyone in the scene, videos like this would not be possible. This video is a tribute to all the hard work of those who chronicled all of this over the years.

I am pretty sure here in Italy Cristina D'Avena and Giorgio Vanni can be considered the most popular singers among millennials and early gen Z. They may not know or like many songs from other Italian singers, but play an anime opening to them and 90% of them will jump and sing the entire song, knowing all the lyrics by heart

Goosebumps material. I like that is very different from what has been done usually with openings, it sounds like a "serious song" by him. The lyrics are also a deeper version of a standard italian anime opening, so much that feel this one can be appreciated more as an adult rather than as a kid.

Cool I didn't know that, I heard about the "japanese 4 chords progression" around the net but I'm not really good at music so I was never able to spot it in a song. Anyway maybe it's present also in the other kind of italian songs related to japan, which is eurobeat (all songs from "Initial D" were italian) I'm quite curious now. I think they made the songs like that because it sounds good and they tried to mantain the same vibe as the original ones.

As an Italian these intros are super well known. I've been into a concert once in Sicily where Giorgio Vanni (the big singer for these intros) sung ALL of the openings he made in his career. It was insane, everyone was singing, screaming a tearing up for every song. These songs are very special to all of us, that's why us Italians cherish these songs so much. Thank you for this video and all of the memories, you did an amazing job explaining all of this

We're massive weebs here in Italy, something not many people know. We've had anime since at least the 70s, my 50+ year old parents know as many anime as me, and we make our own theme songs for most of them, to the point where cartoon theme songs have become their own music genre that kinda singlehandedly keeps the italo disco genre alive. Also fun fact: the lyrics of "What's my destiny Dragon Ball" spoil the whole Saiyan arc

As an Italian, watching this video has been absolutely delightful! Here's some more trivia: The DragonBall Z opening is likely the most popular Giorgio Vanni opening in Italy as well. As for the most popular Cristina D'Avena opening, that will have to go to her first opening for the Smurfs, which you should be able to find under the name "Noi Puffi siam così" (though its actual title is "Canzone dei Puffi"). That one is also absolutely iconic even in a different way. If I had to guess, I think the Smurfs one is more of a classic. I'm not entirely sure if the Smurfs one is actually original though?? But I'm going to guess it is. Giorgio Vanni actually sang an original Italian opening for My Hero Academia!! The first season still only used The Day, if I recall correctly, but I'm pretty sure they started using Giorgio Vanni's opening from the second season onward. You can look that one up too, it's more energetic than usual I think, but I think it still slaps

I'm Italian and I love this video. Yes, I can confirm it: our openings are FIRE. And you're the first one I've seen acknowledge our opening of Dexter's Lab!! That is one of my favorites. I don't like ALL Italian openings, but I think what makes them so loved here and internationally is that they manage to get the vibe of the series they're describing. I'm convinced Giorgio Vanni is a cartoon character in human form! XD Your Space Toons segment reminded me of this little amazing fact: so there's an anime about Les Miserables called "Shoujo Cosette". Space Toons opted for a cover of "I dreamed a dream" from the musical, for that opening. It's as amazing as you can imagine. Cheers!

I love seeing Italian openings being talked about! Openings from the 2000s are iconic, but the ones from the 80s are all absolute bangers! Fantaman, Mazinger, Kotetsu Jeeg (Jeeg Robot d'Acciaio) are fantastic, and Hokuto no Ken (Ken il Guerriero) is the saddest ballad ever. Openings from the 80s were great because they were usually written and played by session musicians who worked with famous artists, so the quality level was pretty high

Some time ago I at least tried to look behind the "German" Naruto Opening because I couldn't believe that this was something our "German Anime Opening scene" would have produced. There is a video of the extended song and the description of this video say the following: Composed by Giovanni Rubbiani Performed by Jungle Crew and Silvia Orlandi Those peoples' names look Italian and I think I looked up the band once again and either I found nothing or get it confused with something different I found. Apparently this song was licensed by an Australian company and Australia has its share of Italian immigrants. This opening also was used in Australia, no wonder then, and Spain. So unless someone proves this wrong I think that the "German" Naruto Opening actually is the Australian one that for whatever reason we just used as well. For the rest unfortunately you missed out on some original German gems. One Piece probably is the most popular. But Heidi got an original Opening as well which other countries used instead of the Japanese original too. There are many more. Another example is InuYasha.
@PatMacYT
@PatMacYT Жыл бұрын
While making this video I remember seeing Australia in discussions of the Naruto opening and I 100% should have mentioned that in the video, and the German section in this should have been longer in general. It's unfortunate that the song has become what most of the world thinks of when they think of German anime songs, when you're right, there are so many greats. Right before I show the Korean One Piece opening in this video, I show on screen a CD case of Die Legende, as I found it after recording for the video but wanted to include it as a nod. Post making this, I've listened to many of the songs uploaded to KZbin with the Anime Allstars/Anime Hits thumbnails and they're all great. Perhaps one day a video fully going into the true origins/creators of the "German" Naruto opening could be interesting. Thank you for doing research on it.

I was stationed in Italy for 4 years and in my time over there I learned Italians are some of the biggest anime fans in the world! I went to a few conventions over there too. The classics are iconic over there like Dragonball, Saint Seiya and Sailor Moon. Lupin the Third, Urusei Yatsura and Mazinger are probably the most popular though. They used footage from all over the Hunter Exam, though one shot is from the Heaven's Arena arc. At the beginning is first few shots are from Episode 1, and I honestly can't remember the rest right now. However, I can say the Arabic dubbers chose some key moments in the story and that's actually quite nice.

Brasil tried to make its own theme songs in the 80's and 90's: in the 80's we had original theme songs for Hana no Ko Lunlun, the King Arthur anime, Little Lulu and Her Little Friends and probably a few more animes and cartoons. In the 90's anime wasn't popular until 1995, when Cavaleiros do Zodiaco was dubbed from the Spanish version, and for the "second season" we had an original theme song, and even a CD with brand new songs. The first dub of Draogn Ball in 1996 also had an original theme song, Magic Knight Rayearth and the Dragon Quest anime also had original theme songs in the same year (1996), the last anime to have an original theme song was Captain Tsubasa J in 1998 But we have original songs released on CD by Brazilian artists: like Rambo, Ninja Turtles and He-Man in the 80s. a Power Rangers CD was also released in the 90s by Sandy & Junior, and two Pokémon CDs in the 2000s by children's singer Eliana, who also did a song for Sailor Moon R a few years later.

What I find really cool is when foreign singers sing themes in another country. Good example of this is Boa (K-Pop and J-Pop idol) who has sung many themes of Animes and such. She even sung a song with Howie of Backstreet Boys for the launch of Bratz in Japan (as well as Christina Milian in a second song), both in English and total bops. Even in Korea, commercials get their own songs (maybe in Japan too, but I don’t listen to J-Pop as much). I think one of the most interesting is Chocolate Love by Girls’ Generation and f(x), which were sister groups under SM (even two of the girls from each group was real life sisters from the US, which are two of the 5 American born idols, and only one having not been raised at all in America).Chocolate Love was made to promote the LG CYON Chocolate cell phone, which only had Ciara promoting it in the USA with one of her older songs. 2NE1 first appearance as a group was in a CF for the LG Cyon Lollipop cell with label mates BIGBANG. f(x) also did a second song for it in Chinese (two members were of Chinese/Taiwanese decent) with boy group M.I.C and then later with SHINee on their first album in Korean. I honestly think Korea has went up and beyond promoting things with singles made for what they are promoting. You’d think that with 1000 writers to make a whole album in America, we could make original music for every commercial ever, but nope, too…lazy I guess. I also love the fact that in Korea, Idols can promote themselves on TV on live stages. It’s honestly fun seeing the talent of these people. Now if only they got paid better and got more days off. And better diets.

A similar thing happened when the original Godzilla movie from 1954 was dubbed for Italy in 1977. Instead of using the theme for Godzilla that appears in most movies, they made a techno remix of a specifc song from the movie called "Prayer for Peace". The italian theme for Godzilla has been dubbed the "Cozzilla" theme (due to the director of this dub being Luigi Cozzi) and its actually catchy. Whats even more interesting is that this specifc theme was then tweaked slightly and used in two zombie movies, Zombi 2 and City of the Living Dead. Evidently, Italy really loves Techno music when even Godzilla gets it in the italian dub

Fun fact. The PokéRap has two French versions. The European version which has the French Pokémon names (Dracaufeu, Psykokwak, Carapuce) and a Canadian French version that only changes the main lyrics while leaving the Pokémon names in English. Basically in Québec, Pokémon used the English name for the Pokémon's for its French dub up until 2004-2005 then the show came back on air on the same channel in 2017 with XY but this time using the European dub so Ash became Sasha, if there was a Charizard it became a Dracaufeu, even Detective Pikachu despite being dubbed in Canadian French used the European names for the Pokémons and my sister absolutely dislikes Psyduck's name in its European French variant.

When it comes to dubbing, it's amazing when they create new songs for the openings of many of the cartoons and animes we grew up with, and quite catchy they can be, especially if you hear some English songs like Kirby Right Back at 'Ya! and Sailor Moon. But in my country, our language, Latin Spanish, most of the songs were from the original Japanese version having the lyrics fully translated, with some exceptions like Pokemon, where they used the English version but translated. And just like those live performances those singers did, in one of the Comic Cons years ago (Yes, we also have a Comic Con in our country), there was an ocassion when one of the singers sing the opening theme for the Latin Spanish dub of the first Digimon, and no, it was not the English rap you guys had, thankfully! Even fans who assisted sing along, a demostration these dubs were our childhood.

It's possible that unrelated regions with similar opening instrumentals got them through the licensor for use and they just sing over it. I think in the case of AoStH, it was a case of where the original US was a riff in a pre existing song and I guess they couldn't always give it out to other countries.

Somewhat related, in Germany they released a music CD called "Digimon Gold". Their dub of the Digimon series was based on the Japanese version and includes German covers of all the songs used in it, however they did get the US made Digimon the Movie and it's amazing soundtrack. Digimon Gold contains the German covers, original German songs, US made music for Digimon the Movie, and as a bonus, the Japanese versions of some of the songs. Somehow one CD has music from 3 different versions of the same show.

One of my favorite Italian openings is the one for Inspector Gadget, which Cristina D'Avena also did. It almost makes the show sound like a kids anime, which is funny because it was actually animated by TMS. The French version (although perhaps not a 'variant' but actually the original, since Dic was a French company) is also awesome because it adds lyrics to the American version most people are familiar with.

Oh man, there's interesting story behind French Dragon Ball. France was one of the first countries in the world to dub Dragon Ball. They licensed that (censored and recut) dub out to other countries, especially in Europe. As a result here in Poland we had censored French version with Polish voice-over (common practice for shows for adults and low-budget alternative to full dub). We therefore "inherited" changes top character's names like Goku being called Songo and Piccolo being called Satan Petit Coeur (Satan Little Heart, which was the cutest thing after being translated into Polish). Saint Seiya went to the same process, and some were licensed from Italy, like Dash! Kappei aka Gigi La Trotolla or Yattaman. A few years later 4kids era anime was all dubbed. However there were dumber instances of this process - Magic Knight Rayearth and Slayers both aired with Japanese voice track and Polish voice-over, but the script was VERY CLEARLY not translated from original Japanese. That resulted in character calling each other their orignal names in Japanese track that you could very clearly hear, while voice-over would use names localized from other language, for example Fuu from MKR being called Anemone after Italian dub.

Something similar happened with Saint Seiya's Neutral Spanish dub. The anime was dubbed directly from the Japanese version but the opening theme was the one they used for the European Spanish version, which was a cover of the French dub. Years later when the anime was rebroadcasted they dubbed the orignal japanese songs, and they were pretty good covers, though some people have a soft spot for the original opening

As a Frenchman, I was mindblown to hear someone talk in English about the Club Do-era openings. Bernard Minet made it worldwide, damn. I can't help but go into a bit of infodumping about one of my favourite cross-era French opening story: that of the three adaptations of Captain Tsubasa broadcast in France. The first 1983 adaptation, named Olive et Tom over here, used the Italian Lupin the IIIrd opening, for some reason (that isn't just Berlusconi importing Italian-licensed anime to La 5 channel). It's still iconic to this day because that thing was broadcast to death until the late 2010s, but I imagine that it' be weird for an Italian to hear that instrumental associated to Oliver e Benji instead of Lupin. The 2001 adaptation, named "Olive et Tom le Retour" ("Olive and Tom: the Comeback"), also had its own theme in France - but that one is... far less iconic, as the series itself is tbh. A fun fact about it is that, on KZbin, you can find all episodes of O&T le Retour in French, but its opening there was replaced with both Japanese openings, even in French. The OG 1983 series doesn't have that, since its French episodes use the French opening and the French-subbed Japanese episodes just lack the opening altogether. No "Moete Hero" for us, I guess! The 2018 series ditched the localized names and just went broadcast as "Captain Tsubasa". It, however, came with its own French opening once more! It wasn't a translated version of either Japanese openings either, it's its own thing and it shares its name with the 1988 opening to Olive & Tom ("Le Chemin de la Victoire", lit. "The Path to Victory"). Anyway I still don't know why all European dubs in the 1980s thought Wakabayashi was present enough to name the show after.

The Italian theme song artists releasing their older work onto CDs and even streaming services actually really helps with lost media preservation. There was plans for a dub of the Earthworm Jim cartoon for Italy one but it was canceled last minute and none of the episodes were ever released. The theme song on the other hand was released by Christina D'Vana on to CD's and Streaming Which means that the dub was at least made, But the episodes are just lost, And you could find a proper date.

It was the equivalent of 4kids to us, and boy oh boy it was really popular in the arab world, still remember finishing my homework and watching animes from late 80s, 90s and some newer cartoons. Ah ....the good ol days الله يعطيك العافيه Edit:The only dub that actually was clear in my mind is the dragon ball z one:) , aaand the agent Konan one also:D

There's actually a few differences between the two AoStH intros(10:30/10:48) besides the languages and singer. The Italian one has a few parts where who-I-assume-is-Sonic chimes in, while the French one it's all one voice the whole way through. There's also an extended version of the French version with more verses and instrumental breaks, which I couldn't find for the Italian one.
