One thing I learned was that alot of the posts on airbnb are posts from renters themselves who are renting the room. If you can get to the actual owner you can get the room for a real low deal. - frequent traveler tip

Don't stay in Copacabana. No ..... This guy maybe used to being a rough area but as a gringo if you don't speak the language especially it is not a place you want to stay and you are putting yourself in danger. LeBlanc is much better but it's the most expensive part of the city you probably want to stay in botofogo or Ipanema or even recreao or Baja da tajuca. Also guys, realize that Rio is an old city so you have to understand most of the buildings are going to be from the '60s and '70s and haven't been updated for the most part as opposed to some place like florianopoulos which is much safer and much more modern and more affordable. I guess it depends on your goals and what you like and if you're staying short-term or long-term. If you're staying long-term I would recommend florianopolis which is where I live currently. Much more affordable much much safer for long-term living.
