Bob Moog would be proud. It’s easy to buy ready built kit and do this, but building the kit yourself and doing this 70’s style synth stuff again in the 2020’s is something else.

You're an inspiration, Sam. Not only are you building your instruments, but you're making you're using them to make music (like I was trying to do before health problems blew me up), then sharing the process in videos. Plus there's that crazy museum thing that I love. You restore my faith in humans - or some odd ones, anyway. Thank you.

The scenes, the sounds, the bridging of built and natural objects and spaces. I get used to the behind the scenes work on the museum etc and then you come along and drop a crazy project with hainbach, or make a retro tv show, or, *this*. The residency was an amazing way to launch the portakosmo concept and journey. The way you summoned these sounds and ideas from that process and that place was amazing. Right down to the little things like the foghorn emulation/composition. Listening to Sounds from the other Shore, staring at those 3 'moduliths' each standing there, towering above the transient seaweed world, dwarfed by the ancient mountains. Something starts swelling and radiating an awesome emotional intensity. And from such a serene, unassuming stillness. Like the way you describe the tides rising. To reference Nihls Frahm and Catechism, you came 'All Armed' to summon a 'Spectral Torrent'. Now I'm off to lmnc bandcamp. Thanks Sam.

fascinating, thanks for letting us in on the thoughts and process that went into making this. i think it helps make art so much more alive, instead of having it sit around in a museum in a kind of sterile way

I like this. I'll admit that I'm the first to criticise when things get hippie-dippie-arty-farty, but at the same time not all tools need sharp edges, and going out and being inspired by the "mood" of things does just work. I especially like the thematic juxtaposition of synth music and nature, and I think Cloud Inversions is my favourite for this because even though they contrast each other, they both have that cold and grungy vibe linking them together. That beach full of seaweed, the constant decay of the dry plants, doing their best to resist the frost before the tide wets them again, it just feels like something there has been captured by the music perfectly.

Great vid, you explained enough for this length of vid, considering the complexity of it. We enjoyed the combination of location, sounds, words. Pauline Oliveros talks about responding to your surroundings. I always leave a sizeable element of my performance as improv. Respond to the vibe, venue etc. During Lockdown, when we could drive out for exercise, of course, I would take a stack of 12v batteries out to my favourite remote wild places, 12v diy amps, speakers, pedals, tape, radio, feedback set up etc.... Id grove down with the sheep and corvids, and cause concern for occasional dog walkers.

The magic number is 125 BPM, that makes people dance. It's a cool thing with the MPC, playing a mp3 track from your stick and putting a beat under it, it's pretty hard syncing that by ear, unless you can tap the tap button correct, but still. The mpc has a cool thing, you can chop the mp3 or have it do for you by the mpc, they are automatic assigned to pads and putting these slices on the right spot. I found out the MPC has a very very cool metronome.

I'm watching a movie, called "Berlin Calling" where a person uses sounds from the environment, like closing doors in a train and making music with it. Now he is the biggest act on the planet, check it out. Kosmo is a very cool thing, i want to do that as well but using 3.5 mm jacks. routing this smalll pcb's takes ages for eurorack. Check out the ic the 23s17/23s18 if you haven't, 16 bit I/O expanders, good for creating sequencers. the fog horn is a cool sound.

That's great! Looking forward to the next installment of PortaKosmo. I liked that last song and it's video. I was wondering about the background banging sound if it wasn't a train or manufacturing sounds in the distance. It all felt very cinematic. I think with the right film you could do a film score.

I'm a 64yr old bloke with quite a lot of electronics experience, but more based on the power electronics side of things. I would love to build a synthesizer, but not a clue where to start. I'm thinking along the lines of a keyboard, where I can change the output sounds (if that makes any sense). Any suggestions on something simple to begin with?
@1pcfred

I've seen step by step series that cover building DIY eurorack synthesizers. They go over each module you need in order and how to build one. But I don't know how many people start out doing it right initially. Because conforming to the standards is a bit trickier. Building instruments that are actually in tune.
