The way he single-handedly reached out across quadrants to connect with her and her far-flung crew, the lone persevering voice in the wilderness letting them know they weren't forgotten? Reg is a fucking hero! But seriously. He could show her the unabashed joy in things the average Starfleet officer would find mundane. He could teach her to let go. Set up scenarios that would help her explore her feelings. Help her navigate social anxiety and the ways to deal with human society from the standpoint of a person who doesn't quite fit in. She could help him find more of his confidence, keep him from falling into self-pity and inaction, provide logical, no nonsense advice, and even check his vitals for anomalies. Yes, they should have brought him over to become a regular cast member like Worf on DS9. Even if they had found some excuse to keep the holographic Barclay around, more closely based on the real one back home. Say they needed his insight for some problem and the connection to starfleet was too shaky for reliable comms with the real Barclay, so they send a hologram like they did in message in a bottle with a much more detailed replica of Barclay to be their liaison. Then perhaps something goes wrong and they lose connection completely during the transfer, and the hologram is badly corrupted, the only way to save it being to supplement the program with some of the Doctor's fixes that helped him keep his program together running long term without a reset. The unexpected side effect of this being the Barclay hologram gaining sapience and they're stuck keeping it around after the job is done because it has the same capabilities and rights as a lifeform as the Doc. Man I wish they'd done something like this, would have added a lot to the show. I'm picturing scenes of banter between him and the Doctor about holographic existence, maybe he's confined to sickbay and the astro lab since they only have one mobile emitter, and he's always trying to "borrow" it to follow up on some idea that needs testing in another part of the ship. Some awkward conversations between him and the real Barclay on Earth, where they're each a little put off by the similarities and differences between the man and the uncanny valley facsimile with its identical appearance but divergent set of experiences, until they come across some brilliant solution to a problem and get to work as if they were childhood best friends. So many wasted opportunities when I think about any aspect of Voyager. They had a chance to make a show that could've been TNG meets Battlestar Galactica, with what we got instead, there's enough room to imagine what could've been done better with barely any effort at all.

I love Barclay. He's so incredibly relatable, and such an exceptionally accurate embodiment of high functioning(read: fairly good at hiding it) autism, which can only have happened by accident, since that point of the spectrum wasn't recognised at the time. I didn't find him all that interesting the first time around, when I was a child, I think because as far as I was concerned he was just really, really normal(i. e. just like me, and of course I wasn't diagnosed back then) and what's interesting about that? Twenty-whatever years later, and I can see that that very representation is what makes him so important. The fact that a character with difficult to explain issues, awkward, strange, a magnet for bullying and alienation, desperate to be accepted but clueless and terrified of trying to be in the real world with real people, is not the punchbag comic relief but someone crucial to the overarching plot, without whose atypical neural pathways a whole bunch of revelations would never have been made and Voyager would never have had contact with Earth - that's amazing. That's awesome. That probably only happened because they weren't aware that they had a character who should have had a diagnosis.
@Dowlphin4 жыл бұрын
You called by name what made him so relatable to the Trek fandom. 😉 (Although I don't consider him the most typical example. We don't know what he experienced in his childhood. Someone can get pushed to the sidelines for any kind of deviation from the norm, and that can make insecure and clumsy. In fact, I would say he could also be distinctly non-autistic; that his high sensitivity and virtuous willingness to self-doubt led to who he is.) eqi.org/invalid.htm

Barclay on the other hand has a character that isn't perfect, and evolves over time, he's the most complete character arc any of that cast ever go through, and he's competent without pulling crap out of his ass on a regular basis, he's like if you put an actual person in setting

Barclay actually works as a meta commentary on TNG era trek also. He exposes their most significant flaw, their apparent perfection and the skewed perspective it gives them. I doubt it was intended as such but his stories can be read as sharply critical of the status quo of the show, as if he were written by someone outside of the production.

Michael Piller remarked, "It really was not intended directly at Star Trek fans. It was certainly about fantasy life versus reality. More than any other character in the three years I have been at Star Trek, the character of Barclay was more like me than anybody else. My wife watched that show and saw what was going on, and said that's [me] because I'm constantly in my fantasy world. Fortunately, I make a living at it. I have an extraordinary fantasy life and use my imagination all the time. It's real life that I have the problems with. I was delightfully happy with the episode." In fact, Barclay's line about "[standing] in the corner, trying to look comfortable examining a potted plant" was taken near-verbatim from something that Piller himself said to Ira Steven Behr shortly after the latter joined the show's writing staff; Behr subsequently added the line to the script when he performed a rewrite on the episode.

While I have not seen all season 1 from what I've seen there's quite a lot in common with Silvia Tilly and Reg Barclay, both are reasonbly talented officers who are still socially awkward but well liked by the crew. While I know it's heresy to imply (let alone say) that Discovery did anything right I think here they took the character stereotype that Barclay is and changed enough that it's not just a "younger rule 63" of Barclay.
@ZemplinTemplar6 жыл бұрын
I can sort of see it. Tilly is presented a little too goofily at times (at least for my tastes), but she does have a similar assortment of principled and awkward qualities as Barclay. I'd say the main difference is that Sylvia seems generally easy-going and sometimes a bit lippy, while Reg is a lot more self-conscious whenever people are around, as if afraid they'd judge him for every minute thing. Tilly doesn't have that many qualms about people judging her. To me, at least, it seems she's more conscious about getting along with others and making friends. Tilly's also certainly a better character than the likes of Lorca (whatever the hell they were trying to do with him, beyond the obvious bad guy reveal). In fact, one of my main criticisms of Discovery's wannabe-edgy writing is that a cheerful, sunny character like Tilly feels exceedingly weird and mismatched with the dark-and-gritty tone they tried to set for the ship's crew. If the place is supposed to engage in almost "black ops" and "secret research" style shenanigans, isn't the recruitment of a wide-eyed, rather sensitive cadet a bit of a contradictory decision ? Barclay's character didn't clash with the TNG era crews in such a way. He still felt at home, rather than almost misplaced into a hostile context.

I've seen the same thing in other shows, Lynn for example would be a better match for Alan Partridge than Sonia but Alan refuses to admit it because she's not a 40 year old scorcher, yet they actually work together better as a couple in terms of their interactions. Ditto for that 2000 dramatisation of Jason and the Argonauts, I can't remember the name but there was an archer woman who was clearly interested in Jason but of course he had to get married to the princess/Queen or something. However, irc he had way more chemistry with the archer. It's funny how these things manifest from the scripts that the writers possibly didn't intend.

There is this book called, A First Rate Madness. The book points out, perfect people are kind of pointless. Yeah, they look good, and if there is no problems, they are the person for the job. Once the shit has hit the fan, you need to push the Golden Boys aside, and get the people, who are little off, to do the hard work. During times of crisis, it's our world leaders, Who are deeply depressed, who get the job done. The Golden Boys are in the corner, whimper. Both Abramham Lincoln, and Winsten Churchill were deeply depressed, but they function very well, when all hope was lost. Take World War two for example. When world war two first broke out, everyone want to join. The only took the best, of the best in the military. In the beginning of the war, we had an army of Golden Boy. Golden boys had lived their lifes, where they world fell at their feet, and life was gift handed to them. They all snapped, and coundn't handle it. "Why don't people just fall down, when I show up." was basically how they seen battle. When everyone started coming home in boxes, they had to draft people. Before, criminals, the mentally ill, and homosexual were reason you were banned from service. Afterwards, criminals, the mentally ill, and homosexual were just fine for cannon fodder. The things, these type did not break. Why? Hell, they have had the worse done to them, already. Think what it was like being a homosexual in 1930s America. Here an example. A nine year boy in Texas knows he's different, but still hasn't figured it out. Oh, but his mom knows. She talks to the minister. and he tells her how to fix her son. Her son comes home from school. The mother tells her son, "I got do something, I don't want to, but it's for your own good." She gives her son a shot gun, and has him carry it to the backyard. She tell her son, "Dig a hole." Her son digs a hole. As he digs, she tells her own flesh and blood, she doing this to save his soul." By the time the hole is finished, She tells her son, "You are an abomination in God's eye. I'm going to kill you, before you actually sin. this is for your own good. She puts the shot gun to her son's head, and say "Honey, mama don't want to see you looking at her, when she has to shoot you. Close your eyes like a good boy. Being a good boy, he closes his eyes. His mom, turn the gun around, and puts the butt end to the boy's head, and pulls the trigger. The recoil, feels like your being shot. The boy rolls around in the grave screaming, because his mom just shot him. When the pain fades, and the blood stops flowing from his nose, they boy figures out, he is not dead. The mother says, "I did this, so you know god hate faggots. and everyone hates you. So you better not do anything." Is that your childhood. Let me tell you, if that was your childhood, fight nazi is down hill. So, most of feel like Barclay. Remember, you are made of tougher stuff.

Ah, Lt Broccoli. From A-Team to not so A-Team…

I always found the A-Team to be lacking that certain something that could have elevated them to A+Team.

I think Major Kira Nerys would have been perfect for Reg. Kind, strong, pretty and Bajoran. Reg seemed to have a thing for Bajorans according to that pyscho girlfriend, Leosa. Bet he would come out of the holodeck for her.

Never had a layover on DS9. That was a mistake.

Does anyone know a good Reg/Seven Fic? I mean, I write stuff, but not for trek, so I couldn't do it, but it sounds like it might be an enjoyable read in the right hands.

Barklay deals with the hand he's given while Riker has a stacked card. "Believe when I make a joke about Riker, you'll know it...." yeaaa..... I see what you did there.

It makes a huge difference. Many people who attained 'success' and claim they struggled a lot to get there and try to convince others to do the same ... if you dig deeper you may find they were actually pushed along by fate and merely had to follow and endure and handle the hardships of that and then if others believe their bullshit they torment themselves, believing they have to improve themselves and build up willpower, hopefully eventually realizing they have been gaslit by a convenient, reactionary, cog-in-a-machine society. In such a troubled society, "success" all too often means building on your pain so that no one sees what a mess you are without your fortunate support factors.

Out the way, It's Barclay. Oh my You got my wheels turning. I tell you what I could ship the effe Out of any Seven of Nine romantic interest That actually makes sense Come to think it, Barclay too He's a good actor. The O'Brien family was amazing I feel like they could have existed on a show where they were the only good thing about it- know what I'm saying? It was so organic ( DS 9 is a masterpiece, In case that's not clear..... And I also have much affection for Voyager.) Anyway Barclay.

This one probably needs a re-recording of the lines. They're kind of tinny and garbled.

Christ. I'm Lt. Barkley.

The way he was treated by the other officers and crew was as not consistent with more enlightened time they lived in. While it's common for people like Barkley to be laughed at or even bullied today it should have been out of place in the times of TNG.
