I know Barclay is abit of a joke, but to me, a man with bipolar disorder, Barclay is amazing. This was the first character I remember seeing in sci-fi with mental health issues, that his issues were not ignored and you see him getting help. To me, this showed me that in the future mental health issues are taken seriously and made me love TNG.
@bombestbomb1494 жыл бұрын
Dwight Schultz is married to a therapist. He often takes roles like this that highlight a mental health issue. Such as H.M. Murdock, or Barclay. I heard that he talks over the role with her to learn how to play it properly and ensure he gets it right. Considering the roles I've seen him in, I believe that he does do that, but I've not seen/heard an interview that he confirmed it.

I don't know... Kirk and Ryker had great trouble with inability to control their libido, a severe mental imbalance. This is a mental health issue that seems to be celebrated in the sci-fi genre instead of dealt with. Sad. But, I'm glad Barclay was a help to you. I could always identify with him.

Barclay always struck me as one of the most “ordinary” Star Trek characters. It’s as if he was a typical Star Trek fan written into the shows without becoming a “Mary Sue” writer’s pet scrubbed of flaws and weaknesses. He had a relatively ordinary job that many fans probably have (basically an “IT guy”) and lacked natural leadership and social skills, although he did often “step up” when needed. He also retreats into fantasy, as many ordinary people would probably be tempted to do if they had access to real holodecks (like on the modern internet, the most common type of holodeck programs would realistically be “holo-porn” in which people create idealized versions of colleagues and crushes to play out their darkest fantasies, and they would be embarrassed if anyone else discovered those fantasies, especially their subjects).

Barclay was my favourite character and I have always liked Dwight Schultz as an actor. I always assumed Barclay had Autism. I have autism and I noticed some things he did which are similar to autistic traits. He was nervous and anxious in social situations (social anxiety). He found it hard to talk to people and would stutter (He eventually stopped as mentioned to him by the EMH in Voyager Endgame Part 1, "I haven't heard you do that in years" as he stuttered when asked by the EMH about Janeway). He was really focused on his interests (Holodeck, contacting Voyager with Pathfinder, his hologram) and autistic people tend to have limited interests they focus on and can be obsessive about them. This would lead him into trouble when it focused on those more than his actual duties. He was also very intelligent.

Barclay is the #1 character I keep in mind as I design the characters for my own sci-fi story. Some people do age prematurely, so Barclay being in his late 20's in early TNG is possible. It helps that Dwight Schultz has a youthful face and an elderly hairline, and has aged little between his appearances in Star Trek. I had to remind myself that he was in The A Team before TNG, so he had to be in his late 30's - but actors rarely play their own age. So he could have been born in 2340ish, just about. We just have to assume the stress of his anxieties has caused him to lose his hair.

One of the things I love about Star Trek is Roddenberry posited a progressive future in which being a hero didn't require big muscles and a violent disposition. Sure, Kirk and Worf and Sisko were heralded for their skill in shooty things or poky things, but many characters were held up as role models for their skill at medicine or computer programming or pure science too. Many people who have worked at NASA over the last 50 years cite Star Trek as their primary influence in doing so -- and that's pretty awesome.

The best character on NG by far, not perfect, not a born hero, not a leader, warrior, super engineer with full 24/7 support of everyone even when your idea is ludicrous, on a hero starship, full of super human, flawless, ready and able characters, he was amazing in what he does and conquered trust that was not easily given.

I always loved Barclay episodes, though when I was younger it was less about Barclay and more about how each each episode he was in kept getting weirder and weirder

*Data:* "Excuse me Lieutenant Barkley, sorry for interrupting your violin masterclass.… I was wondering if with your enhanced intellect you could fix my dead daughter Lal. And if you could show me what went wrong and the secret to creating more androids like me, it would be most appreciated." *Lt. Barkley:* "Certainly Mr Data, I have always appreciated your kindness, let's see, a cascade failure…you did save her engrams? …good. Got it! class dismissed. [grabs a portable data display tablet] let's go to your lab Mr Data, I'll enter the data [wry smile] in this pad as we go, then after we test it I can download all the construction techniques straight into your mind for future offspring … Have you considered letting me upgrade you Mr Data? I have some ideas, although perhaps it's better to do so with your next child after Lal, I'll show you the specifications…

I always thought Barclay was the type of guy who would flourish BIG time working in some computer lab off away from others. Some people are just not a people person and he's one of them.

Technically speaking, isn't the Star Trek Universe actually the Barclayverse ? I mean, really. :D

The one realistic character in pretty much all Star Trek. Everyone else is exceptional, heroic, and all but stated as superhuman.
