I just bought this watch yesterday in Zermatt. I am very pleased with it (I paid a bit more than 600 CF). I could not find this Automatic with day and date anywhere. When I saw it in Zermatt, I snacthed it up

Thank you for reviewing this design classic. My current day-to-day watch is the "Geant" (giant) 42mm version which is currently available in the UK at around £160. I particularly like the simple layout and the very readable black on white dial. My wife likes the fact that she can tell the time on my watch from the other side of the room!

Fantastic video. Enjoyed this one. I had the stop 2 go version at one point. I thought it was great. Probably need another :)

I own a lot of nice watches but it's this watch I wear the most often. I agree with most of your comments. The crown is a bit fiddly but the watch is so accurate I rarely need to use it. I find crystal fine and, in 4 years, it looks perfect. I don't understand why they put crystal on the back as the movement isn't anything special to look at. I'd personally prefer it if they made a similar manually wound watch without any date or writing on the front, loosing the winder would allow the watch to be a little slimmer. Anyway, this watch is one of my favourites and, for the price, it's difficult to beat.

I have the quartz big date version. I like the squared-off lugs of the EVO line over the classic line, it gives it a bit more of a contemporary feeling. I know it's not anything special in Switzerland, but in Canada where I live, a Mondaine never fails not to be a crowd pleaser. People don't actually stop to compliment you on the watch your wearing, but they will with a Mondaine because it's a famous face. I myself am wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to the automatic, but $600 and no sapphire is a bit borderline, espeically when you consider that you are paying a bit for the famous face.

Good review of the design and origin but even as a self professed automatic snob I definitely prefer automatics to quartz but I had to get the stop2go quartz version of this one.

I have this very evening watched JOMW review this watch. Interesting to watch them back to back. Different comments, both interesting. I’m with you, that the Stop2Go, with the backlight maybe, would be the one to go for. Bill Bryson wore a Mondaine, so must be good. There is something of a feel good factor about it.

Funfact: The famous clocks hanging at the swiss railway stations are manufactured by Moser-Baer and not Mondaine. Mondaine only produces the watches :) The company who sells the original clocks like at the stations is called Mobatime :)

I’ve got the no date quartz version. The auto version is hard to find unless you want to drop big bucks. For as much as I wear my Mondaine, the quartz version is good enough for me. It really is beautiful though. Put mine on a Milanese bracelet.

I think this watch would look its best on a Milanese, good choice.

If I'd have to get one, I'd get this version since the quartz stop2go one tends to fail a lot.

If I was to buy one it would be the stop 2 go version, an unusual movement in a iconic design.

Your attention to detail is truly impressive. Down to the correct order of the acronyms for the federal railway in the three national languages of Switzerland. Keep up the great work!

Nice review. The dial is nice and it has a excellent movement. Unfortunately, 30m WR, mineral crystal, and no Lume. Easy pass for me.
