This stuff is way easier to work with. My wife drives a Caliber, 2008. One of the best cars we've ever had, and she can't kill the CVT (she's killed two Torqueflites). I had a Neon, fun to drive and got 40 MPG (5 speed). But then the oil leaks got too bad, rust came through, the water pump died and that was the end.

A big neon sign takes a big high voltage transformer. They are expensive/hard to find. So are people to work on neon signs. Hmmm, I wonder why they don't use inverters to drive neon. It would be way lighter and cheaper, but not as reliable. I worked with high voltage, high power electronics for many years, and it was never highly reliable. My daughter has a big neon sign that she wants to get repaired, (it's cracked), but I suggested EL wire snaked through the glass. This LED plastic tube might be a better way to go.

+Bilky Asko - I don't see flicker of a 75 Hz CRT monitor, but have had frequent headaches and eye problems because of it. I don't see flicker of a capacitive dropper LED bulb, but that kind of light makes me uneasy, and everything looks weird. When Apple introduced PWM regulated LED backlight into their MacBooks Pro, there were people returning them because they had health issues because of the flickering (or "flickering") screen. Apple noticed that and stopped using PWM to dim displays. Please look into the issue, before dismissing it.

Big Clive, the frame rate isn't an issue with the hardware, it's the software; the basic video utility in iOS is pretty bare-bones. I use a great little app called Moviepro that gives me frame rate options from 1-30, then 48, 50, 60, 96, 100, 120, 192, 200 and 240. It should work just fine with the UK's 50 Hz power. It also includes a pretty good, real time, software based motion stabilizer, resolution options from 320 x 240 all the way up to 3072 x 1728, support for bluetooth mics, audio metering, saveable presets, etc., etc. It's a great little app for something like $5 US. I am not affiliated with the app, I just like it a lot.

You could shove an electrolytic cap in the other end to reduce flicker, but the voltage would go up to 330v, unless you have a variac to reduce the input.

The reason the light flickers when recording is because the shutter speed of the camera(1/60th) is not equal to the refresh rate (50Hz) of the power source. Search for a manual camera app on the iTunes store and you can change the shutter speed to 1/50th when turning on the light and back to 1/60th when done
@whitcwa8 жыл бұрын

In the 220-240V stuff that's the length of each series section of LEDs. In 120V stuff it may be able to be cut in half that multiple. Cutting it anywhere else will effectively kill a large portion on either side by breaking a series circuit.

Hi Big Clive. I've watched quite a few of your videos and find them really interesting. You show quite a lot of the cheap Chinese led lights and I was wondering, are the mains ones safe to use in the UK with a simple visitors adaptor or is it worth paying more for the lower voltage ones which come with a big chunky wall plug like when you purchase fairy lights from a shop? One thing I've noticed on sting lights, is the Chinese ones seem to be made of much cheaper insulation however, with the ones your showing on this video, that's not the case. I reviewed one of those videos just now and yes, you're right. It is hunting for focus and exposure quite a bit. However I wouldn't count this option out because of this, since these settings can probably be locked, like Clive is doing with the exposure on the iPad. Aside from that, the overall video quality seems to be better on those videos, at least in my opinion.

You can get 360 degree versions of this now but they don't all appear the same (I've seen some with shadows).

Do you mean the round LED ropelight? It's been around a long time.
@rupert2745 жыл бұрын
Didn't realise you'd replied, sorry. I meant stuff like this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360-Degree-Glow-flex-Round-LED-Neon-Rope-light-strip-220V-2835-waterproof-lamp/291978684010?hash=item43fb49266a:m:mW_8fjGTYt2327iPnLlQHWQ What is likely to be inside the lump of plastic between the LEDs and the mains plug in the picture in that listing? I can only think of one reliable way to find out :P

Hey Big Clive......any chance you might do some live streaming soon?

I wish I could, but the Internet connectivity here is too slow with just 600Kbs upload.

got those lights from ebay, but they do not work? any ideas?

Three possibilities. The material can only be cut on specific marks. If it's a metre or less then make sure it's not been cut mid-run. The lead supplied with it contains a rectifier and the connection must be put on the correct end for the polarity to be correct. The connection is made by metal pins pushing up the end of the busbar wires's strands. If not aligned correctly it can miss the strands and go into the plastic instead.

isnt the conector polerised by the shape ? your not going to attach the other bit upside down.
@bigclivedotcom8 жыл бұрын
It's quite neat. It can only go on with the correct polarity whichever end you connect it to. Did you get approved for the lift forum?

Hi Clive, the Ipad can record at 720 60fps, so why not render video's at 60 fps? Great video as always.
@wupme8 жыл бұрын
because it makes the files to upload larger, and there is seriously no benefit for videos like ones clive makes.
@Scotty241984248 жыл бұрын
it would stop the flickering effect from the lights.... and the files are not that much larger.
@whitcwa8 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't help. The lights flicker at 100 hz.

Scotty24198424 I dont think that would work for him as the UK runs their power at 50 hertz.
