Your criticism of the old controls is a praise from my point of view. Everything you just stated makes the game more challenging and interesting to pull off. In the new modern games platforming is so automatic and boring. You know exactly where you need to go, platforms will usually be very visible to you and it requires little to no effort to pull a jump. But in the old TR games platforming was a challenge in itself. Looking around, aligning yourself properly, timing your jumps. It required creativity and that's what made it special. The main problem with the current generation of gamers is that they require everything to be spoon-fed to them. Games are becoming more and more like cinematic experiences than actual videos games that require effort and intelligence to beat.

Exactly, the older games the tomb was the puzzle. I'm not talking about what key goes where, by that i mean the environment was the puzzle.

For me this remastered collection has been incredibly sweet to finally playthrough without cheats and just saving as I go. I'm almost done with 2 and definitely am looking forward to 3 since I only ever played a rental copy of the game back in the day. Cheers!

When i was a Kid, saving in Tomb Raider required a memory card on Playstation... we had none! Every death required a complete restart of the game from scratch and I still managed to finished the first Tomb Raider without one. The first few levels i beat at least 100 times. It meant that the console ran for days because I had to go to school and sleep. When I think about how dedicated you were as a child, it blows my mind. Today, replaying it... if i die a handful times (...and i die a lot), i don't feel like playing any more for the next few days... lol.

I recall doing the same thing with Crash Bandicoot 3 AND Resident Evil 4 haha my PS2 memory card broke the week I rented it and I was speed running the village section after a few days, before it occurred to me to leave the console on lol

i bought the remasters for tr1, it was my favourite game back in the day, in 1996, i finished it with no cheats tips or walkthroughs, i had no internet and i had the saturn version as i bought it basically as soon as it came out, it took me 2 weeks of solid play to finish it, i was stuck many times, for 3 days on one level while the solution was right under my nose, that was the joy of it, the first game was magic, and it was great going back to it with the remastered graphics

11:57 "Objectively worse" is a strong statement; the moves you mentioned as missing are actually present in a different form. I have beaten the games several times using tank controls and have now beaten them with modern controls. Mastering both schemes, I have noticed that there are certain things you can now do much faster and more precisely. Getting used to the modern controls will take some time, just like the tank controls did, but after mastering them, there are clear benefits.

Re: the platforming/tank controls... I thoroughly enjoy the fact that you have to take your time and plan your routes when navigating the platforming elements of the game. Grasping the controls and using trial and error was something many gamers would celebrate during the 90s and early 2000s. I am grateful that they retained them.

There’s such a weird dichotomy in the gaming community these days. Everyone praises dark souls for slow and deliberate gameplay that requires planning your attacks around realistic animations and slow thorough exploration, then they turn around and call all of those aspects “objectively” bad when they’re present in many other games. Imagine saying “when I press the attack button, my character should attack immediately” when talking about dark souls.

Lack of skills and gamers asking for handholding its why we got Tomb Raider uncharted style nowadays, people just need to accept not all games are for everyone and that's okay. I love Uncharted but it's success ruined TR. TR is an exploration game, you were supposed to get lost! Getting frustrated by it means it's not for you.
@MR.__G9 ай бұрын
Couldn’t agree more and I’m someone who didn’t play the TR games besides 2 as a kid. I came back to these games not having any nostalgia for 1 & 3… I can honestly say the 1st game is one of the best games I’ve ever played and it had me puzzled in ways a game hasn’t in decades. The level designs, tombs, caves, ruins, colors are a beauty to see. I love the exploration and the isolated feel of the 1st. That game embodies everything a TR game should be.

The 2013 reboot seemed at first to end as becoming the actual Lara but never became. OG Lara was calm, macho yet gracefully beautiful, the last actual Lara was from Underworld. The current TR is an imposter Hunger Games look alike cos playing as Lara Croft.

One thing i think this remaster lacks to make it accessible for newcomers is an easy mode with passive health regen when you’re out of combat and i think they should have added some kind of hint system for the people who struggle with the puzzles and get stuck

Ok I won't lie, I forget there was a roll button haha tank controls just make my brain think Resident Evil and no one was dodge rolling in those games til RE6 lol
@apo.78989 ай бұрын
@@mykplaze193 With the original controls you should use the roll button often. It primarily is a quick turn button though, not a dodge button. Even though I prefer Classic TR over modern games the combat was very bad. Many (probably most) modern games essentially have bad combat too but in other ways.

I understand that the games are not for everyone. It does sadden me that they are seen as unappealing to modern players because they are challenging. To me, that's what made them great. Having to be strategic in your saves and health packs, having to be able to perform difficult platforming perfectly, having to figure out what to do next, and not knowing if you're going to die right around the corner is what made the games fun for me and thrilling to complete. I remember the first time I played Legend, I had just replayed the first six games. I was getting frustrated with the controls because they were so different from the previous games, but I still kept progressing because it didn't matter if you died, you just reboot with full health at previous checkpoint three steps back. The disappointment that washed over me when I felt like I hadn't mastered the controls and sucked at the game, and yet, made it halfway through the game in one sitting. And that's the difference, back then you had to be good to progress, and games these days it doesn't matter, the game is going to help you win regardless of your level of skill. People love to win, so I see the appeal, sometimes I just miss a challenge.

@apo.78989 ай бұрын
I have finished Legend and it feels a little childish like it is made for teens. I am not talking about the difficulty primarily. The other two of the LAU era have a few nice ideas but very bad game design. Especially when I tried to play Anniversary and Underworld I was thinking more often 'Ok. Where do they expect me to go'.

I'll maybe get them on a steam sale. They look good. I just was never really good at them. I did complete Tomb Raider 1 though and I felt a good feeling of accomplishment. @@mykplaze193 I think he just means that when this came out there was nothing like it. it was one of the first 3d games outside of mario 64. Back then there was zero expectation on how 3d control worked and at the time the game played perfectly for someone experiencing it for the first time. Now you have years of games that perfected 3d control, industry standards and features that you can not think about when reviewing it.
