I’ll finally return Chengdu in July for the first time after 4 years living in New York for study and work as a musician. I used to visit my school(Sichuan Conservatory of Music)’s neighbor - Sichuan University every Friday 7pm at their English corner under the flag raising platform. I highly recommend you to make a video of English corners and friends making in China. Interviewing Chinese people who lived in the US and see what they think about everything there. I found difficulties making friends and living in the US although I actually have plenty and I survive very well by being a school founder+teacher+concert pianist. I supposed to travel anyways and I did it in many countries but the US is culturally the most difficult for Chinese compare to Europe - like you said earlier in another video - something is missing here. While you feel home in China, where the culture emphasize a lot on the reliabilities, you really feel helpless and lonely in the US where emphasizes the independence and freedom.....

Wow, when I take a camera out in the Beijing 7-11 they pretty much dive at me as if I’m about to ignite a bomb lol. “NOOOOOOO PHOTOS!” With a slow motion movie dive in my direction to obscure the camera. I’m jealous you got to record for this long uninterrupted 😆

Enjoyed the vid! Used to go to 7-11 quite a bit in Japan - they also had those ham and egg sandwiches! I agree, they're pretty good. No 7-11s in the city I'm currently in. I heard we are supposed to get our first McDonalds fairly soon though! Take care and keep up the good videos, Austin!
@PrimeInChina6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 7/11 is pretty good here. I live next to a Family Mart and it is pretty awesome. I still don't think they are on the level of the ones in Japan but getting better. I think they are better than 5 years ago. Amazing how if you need something in a hurry you can easily go in and buy pretty much anything. Good video Austin, keep them coming!

The shitty thing about China is that the things are over priced over there. While 1 USA dollar is 6.5 RMB, the average Chinese earns around only 5k USD (converted) a year. In addition, China has no minimum wage. I am currently in China and it sucks seeing so many people struggling.

It's good to know that 7-11 do exist in Mainland China. Close to eighteen months in Wuhan and I haven't seen one here . Which was a huge surprise as I moved here from Taiwan where they were on nearly every corner. Monsoon is more common in this area.

Thank you for sharing about 7-Elevens in China. Can you do an episode on foreigners dealing with 'technicalities" when first coming to China? From when you first step off the plane, registration at the police station, getting through customs. I hope to be in China by the end of July-early August. Wondering what to expect so it doesn't seem so unfamiliar.
@ocelot86116 жыл бұрын
Depends on what visa you're arriving on. Is it a tourist or student visa? If it's either one of those two then arriving in China itself is no problem (I've arrived in China on both).

4:10 so the 7-11 in china is modeled after the japanese ones, I know that because I've been to 7-11s both in canada and japan. And that's called an onigiri -- otherwise what would you call the item on the left of the lower shelf?

@austinguidry26 жыл бұрын
If you're vegan, you're going to have to learn to be flexible. Vegetarian's not so bad, but vegan's TOUGH...you're going to eat a lot of accidental meat and animal products if you go out to eat. Even veggie dishes are cooked with chicken stock/bullion, and a lot of sauces contain various animal products. You'll be mostly cooking at home here unless you open up a bit or don't ask too many questions
@kristinestaples76075 жыл бұрын
There are KZbin lessons on how to say you're vegan. Chinesepod does a good one. It's very doable, there are more and more vegans in China. I'm not in China, but I'm vegan so when I do visit I'll have to deal with this too. Good luck!

I've only been to 7 11 in Japan, and this one looks MASSIVE. Are you saying it's average sized for you? Also I see that many things sold in this store are the same you can find in pretty much any Chinese small supermarket. Prices look good, although I don't know about chengdus prices, I'm at northeast China and seems average pricing. I know Beijing and Shanghai are more expensive. I think 7 11 in China is kind of a let down for me, just by watching your video.
