I absolutely loved how they handled Carmen. I love the fact that he conciously makes the decision not to continue the cycle of abuse unlike what his boss had done. He really is a very relatable protagonist in many ways, the introversion, the self flagellation, the stress and anxiety stemming from a difficult past, they are all things many can relate to.

It was so frustrating not to get a scene of Carmy coming out of the fridge and realizing that his team (that he had shaped) handled the evening beautifully. My hope is that the door being cut open was a sign of hope for a realization that he deserves some joy from his successes.

They seem to really enhance his blue eyes. The interesting thing about blue eyes is they are not based on any blue pigment. “Rayleigh scattering” gives people the effect of blue eyes. Carmen gives the impression of a person who has it together on the rise from a career shift and boldly trying to forge a new direction in his life. But beneath the surface is repressed trauma from surviving a household of explosive and mentally ill adults. He keeps it contained, but it is floating to the surface that he is a product of his environment.

Donna's nihilistic outlook on life influencing Carmy's behavior as he grew older reminds me of the troubles Tony Soprano had getting away from Livia's influence.

I fully agree with everything bar one point. While being a chef gives Carmine purpose, it doesn't give him happiness. I'd wager that if it gave him happiness, he would have given it up.

It definitely gives him a certain level of happiness, however it’s overwhelmed by the amount of negativity and stress in his life (most of it self-inflected or family trauma, but also from his former boss). To just say it doesn’t give him happiness is incorrect, in my opinion.

Regardless of his profession, he’ll never be able to find true happiness until he’s able to work through his insecurities and family issues. Being a chef is likely one of the few things in his life keeping him from fully becoming his mom, or worse, Mikey.

I share some of the mental problems like Carmen, y'know not thinking you are good enough and such. That's why I will always root for him. It is so easy to see someone else for actually being good at something, meanwhile always asking myself how I didn't do enough.

Just like how him and his brother view each other. To Michael he's so proud that Carmen is in the Major leagues and Carmen views Michael as a charismatic loving person but they both view themselves like they're not good enough so they can never genuinely connect.

Im an obsesive too. I feel too much identified with the character. Always the anxiety, the anguish, the guilt, the lack of confidence, and yep the asocial behaviour. PD: episode two and five off season two ARE almost like a dream

Hmm. I don’t know that he’s kind. He has moments of kindness but is lost in his pain most of the time. Especially now seeing season 3. Not a spoiler, but he has quite a lot of that aggression that’s ever-present in bears. That doesn’t just go away, he grew up around that. His unaddressed trauma will continue to trump any progress he makes until he faces it more intentionally & works to heal as hard as he works on his dishes.

Cammy doesn't believe he deserves anything good same goes for someone special in my life and after watching that last scene I just broke. So heartbreaking because It's hard living with a parent who's an alcoholic and or who has mental health issues. I can see so much Cammy in him and in myself.

I think there’s a lot to do one of these for Mikey: I think Mikey had to endure the brunt of Donna which is partially what drove him to his drug use and demise; I think Carmy was driven away and punishes himself that much more now that he’s back because Donna felt relieved Carmy was safe from her abuse but clearly Natalie and Michael were not I also believe Carmy found some tools to deal with his central conflicts when he worked under Chef Terry, even if he maybe runs from the opportunities to use them

I would have loved more insight what influenced both brothers to go into cooking. What was Donna’s influence as a home cook? I can relate to both Donna and Carmy, Donna being the mother who tried so hard to keep the traditions alive and feeling that if all of it will be alive, she will keep the pillars of the home standing, but unfortunately that is not what the family needs or cares about. So She craves for their attention, so much that she tries to break the house, herself and the family by crashing into it. Mikey cooking in a chaotic home style way, mixing all sorts of dishes at the Beef, being good enough to have returning customers even with total lack of customer service or order. he is good but still not being valued and dealing with it by in a similar way to Donna. While Carmy actually gaining the recognition and respect Donna craved.. but not really from the closest people to him. His effort of going through all this training and being an inspiration in the chef world cannot always keep the facade that hides the impostor he feels he is. His droopy blank eyes are often so sad to look at, that is where I see defeat and derealization.

It really highlights how fragile and volatile Donna is, when Pete shows up with that Tuna casserole. Yes, Pete is absolutely an idiot, but as Stevie said, "I knew your heart was in the right place". But the rest of the family's reaction to it is one of anger and fear, because they know it's gonna be the catalyst for Donna's inevitable explosion. Something as simple as ruining the theme, stupid as it was to bring an 8th fish, could have been even worse than what we did see. The look on Sugar's face when she sees him holding the foil tray, and her immediate change from happy to angry and scared. Such a well done episode, but pure emotional violence from start to finish. Kind of reminds me of home lol.

Carmen may have BPD besides PTSD, from his mother. I have BPD and I feel identified a lot with him. His obsessions, the dissociation, the panic attacks and self-medicating with nicotine, I can relate. If not BPD there’s definitely something wrong him. In the final episode of season 3 *spoilers* he said the the abusive chef he had as a boss (can’t remember his name) made him mentally ill, but I think he was already ill before that, due to his abusive family.

I don't think Carmy has what his mother has exactly. I think Donna is very codependent, she makes her emotions the responsibility of her loved ones. I think Carmy responds to that by being mellow and steady until shit happens then he explodes, cause he doesn't know how to cope. He doesn't know how to balance and access that joy. He self sabotages. It's sad to see that he thinks he isn't worthy of happiness or love because he slipped up on one thing: the fridge door, while he was in a relationship. He also left the cigarettes out in s1 when he wasn't in a relationship, so it's just him being human, not being too distracted by a girl, more like being distracted by his own mind. I really relate to Carmy, my dad is like Donna, and I feel a lot like him in my own career and emotions.

He is on the ASD spectrum and has CPTSD . His mom most likely has borderline personality disorder, especially because my extremely abusive mother does and Donna is like a mirror of my mom and I was the youngest sibling, and I had to deal with the brunt of her issues and spent 28 years trying to until I could escape honey, I don’t talk to her anymore. I would say he’s autistic, and not borderline or anything like that like his mother and tries to not be like her and not do the abusive stuff, but ends up because of that family environment doing similar behaviors but in the end, he’s a good person who knows better and doesn’t want to, but he just doesn’t have the skills he reminds me a lot of myself because he’s extremely hard on himself and expects other people and pushes them to do better but he hasn’t abusive about it but does lash out and I believe the finale of season two that he had an autistic meltdown/PTSD and made him snap . I’m making a list every single thing that points to autism, but he literally has to be redirected by people when he gets on the obsession like I do and other people on the spectrum . Another thing is that he can calm down when he’s redirected by someone who is someone he cares about and also in the first episode when he was trading Levi’s for steak, and then knowledge and everything on each item is very typically takes artistic person to have that amount of chest Knowing exactly all the little small details which again he kind of would have to be to have the talent and stuff at such a young age but at the same time, which is very typical things regarding relationships and functioning outside of a planned environment, he kind of loses it, but when he’s in his mode, which is cooking He’s able to function at a genius by war is a good teacher as well. He’s a very blunt, but not in a rude way just very matter-of-fact, which is very artistic and very logical and always thinking about what’s the most rational way of doing something even to where I can be a detriment. But unlike someone who’s a narcissist, he seems to have the drive and everything and perfectionism, and such for his own sake it’s not till like Make other people think of how cool is he just does it for the sake of doing it because it’s not his obsession.

i'm on the spectrum myself high functioning also have performance anxiety & depression. i can relate to carmen to some degree if you watch season 2 ,episode 9 Omelette in the scene where he's by the dumpster having a panic attack. and those flashbacks are playing recurringly in his mind. i felt that. been in situations that makes it hard to focus, and try to push myself too hard, and fail. sometimes feel i didn't do much of an excellent job even if somebody says i did. imposter syndrome also comes into play. in culinary school i dealt with that.

I kept a close eye and on the diploma and other places I only saw his name as Carmen. The names aren’t really authentically Italian in the series, otherwise e.g. Michael should be Michele.

Don’t think she’s well written compared to the others but she’s also very new and they seem to be holding back a bit on her because there definitely is some history. But to the point of Carmy and Claire, we don’t like her because we wish best for Carmy (all things considered) and the distraction of “love interest” was getting in the way of his success at the restaurant. Granted, on the other hand, many see the restaurant as catharsis and general mental relief even though it’s just his coping mechanism for his mental condition, as opposed to self medicating like his other family members who suffer from mental health concerns. Example being his mom with alcohol, and his brother’s addiction and unfortunate surrender. Similar to the protagonist in “Whiplash” many see Carmy’s success as the solution or an accomplishment, when truthfully it is not. (In whiplash the protagonist did finally perform up to perfection, but the path he would continue on would yield terrible results and possibly the same demise as the former student) In reality, if this wasn’t a TV show, Claire is in fact the best thing to add to a holistic regimen to successfully manage his condition. She’s not the only solution for it but she’s truly the best solution as opposed to occupying the space with his compulsions thus turning what should be a passion (cooking) into self afflicting pain - perfectionist in the world of high quality restaurants is a hellscape already. Compare and contrast him, Terry, and especially Luca who was very similar in some ways but didn’t let the compulsion to be the best Chef consume his life for the worst. Watch Terry’s convo with Cousin at the end of “Forks”, watch Luca’s convo with Marcus in “Copenhagen” (where Luca finally explains his secrets to being good), and then contrast the convo Carmy has with himself (and Claire) to close the season. It’s very distinctive, the differences between the three. All the best at what they do. All from the same/similar line of experience leading up to their callings as great chefs. All have come to a better understanding of their personal problems, life, and what their calling means to it. Still don’t like Claire though - ha.

Nope. She is there for a reason. She's meant to be a good thing for Carmy at the wrong time. Is her character completely fleshed out? No. But her "perfectness" , and how Carmy is in many ways is not letting her in (kind of how she was in the restaurant and the scene when he's stuck in the Walk-In) Shows how broken he is, and is not ready for someone like Claire. We've all had relationships like that.
