It's a required language for them to learn in the educational school system. In the U.S. we get to choose which second language we learn, but from my understanding South Korea requires English and then any additional language after-the-fact.

The first time I realized that I can understand Japanese just from seeing people talk was when I watched a Japanese movie without a subtitle. I didn't even realize that I forgot to turn on the subtitle and went on watching it just like that. It felt weird because Japanese is a foreign language to me but I understood it like as if it was my native language.

The first thing I learned about Koreans after interacting with them (I grew up around Korean-Australians so exposed quite young) is that they share a determination to give everything a try. Maybe that's why their country has grown so much in such a short space of time. Even if they didn't know a lot of English everyone here was determined to give it a go because it was the right thing to do. It's an impressive trait to have.

My husband went back to grab something at our hotel in Jeju and he missed a stair coming out and took a bad spill hitting his head. Several grandmas came to his aid...they were very sweet and helped him. Yes he was a Hawaiian Japanese foreigner. I was very surprised how well Koreans were able to communicate in English in Seoul. It's just that they have to muster the courage and try to practice new words every day.

The only problem is, when I hear a word understand i know what it means but when I try to say a word it comes out wrong and then I get confused how to say it. ^ㅠㅅ ㅠ^

It's nice to see how kind they were to the boy. My 10 year old son got lost two weeks after we moved to Switzerland, on his way back from school swimming, since the idiot teacher just left him there, even though it was only his third day at school. It was cold and snowing, and he had no phone (since they weren't allowed at school). He roamed around for hours while trying to find his way home and cried almost to the whole time. Three different people approached him while he was sitting on a sidewalk, crying his eyes out. But when he told them he could not speak German, they seemed to get indifferent and just walked away. I still don't understand why nobody cared about helping a crying, lost, cold little boy. I am happy to see that Koreans are different.

I'm always so shook and impressed at how good non-English speaking countries (especially in the big cities) are at English. They say they aren't good at it and they only learnt it in school yet we also had to learn a second language at school and I would say 0% of my classmates including me could communicate at all in the language we learned. I get it is different because English is kind of everywhere as the most widespread language so it becomes inevitable to know some words, and it is more heavily tested in schools. However, I am surprised that many foreigners or people I've talked to overseas know colours, directions, numbers, family words and almost all basic phrases and can say it with good enough pronunciation for a native English speaker to understand. And even more impressive, that they can usually understand me perfectly well. I feel like native English speakers (including me) should be more encouraging to foreigners when they say something correctly or even just try to use English, because many people are embarrassed about their English when they shouldn't be at all!!

I think what really matters is how much you actually plan on using the language you're learning in school, a lot of people in non english speaking countries use the english dominated internet and is therefore forced to learn the language, or be locked off a lot of digital content, yet most other languages aren't as appealing in that aspect.

I am Korean, and live in South Korea. I had this situation once where one little american girl crying in the bench in the food court section because she lost her mom somewhere in the Lotte Mall. She told me that she asked multiple people but no one seemed to understand english. I was the only person who could fully speak and understand english. Lotte mall is pretty big it has about 7 to 8 floors, so its very hard to find. So I infact reported to the security guards for them to notice and announce the whole building. Still no answer. After somewhere between hour and galf later, she found her mom. Her mom also was asking the security guard to find her child. Her mom kept thanking me for staying with her. Probably one of the biggest times Ive helped so far. Which was 5 years ago.
