Edit of Jane Eyre, BBC 2006 version, by Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson.
Jane is a very resilient woman, she grew up without her parents, she was rejected by her aunt who sent her to a very strict school, where she met her first friend, but who soon died of an illness, however, Jane continued her routine at Lowood Institution and got the basis of her knowledge.
With this, Jane begins a new phase in her life, she writes an advertisement in the newspaper and is soon called to tutor a French girl at Thornfield Hall.
Thornfield is practically a character apart, and very much reflects the self-image of the Lord of the house, Mr. Edward Rochester.
Rochester has a mysterious, ironic and sometimes rude temper, he is very rich but screws up his life. However, he sees in Jane an innocent and sincere young woman. Gradually, Jane and Rochester create a bond of trust and friendship, through the long conversations proposed by Rochester.
Many mysteries surround Thornfield Hall, but the relationship between Jane and the Lord of the house enters a new level when Rochester decides to marry and brings guests to spend a few days at Thornfield. Among these guests is Miss Blanche Ingram, whom Rochester led Jane to believe he would marry.
With the wedding in sight, Jane decides to get away of Thornfield, but Rochester proposes to Jane marry him and they both agreed. What seemed like a dream, however, turned into a nightmare, when on her wedding day, Jane discovers that Rochester had a lunatic wife living at Thornfield, which explained many of the mysteries surrounding the place.
Jane understands Rochester's situation, but decides to leave him.
After a year living with a family who rescued her from death, Jane continues to hear and remember Rochester.
At another turning point in her life, Jane decides that she will return to Rochester and discovers that he has been blinded by a fire set at Thornfield by his lunatic wife, who died in the incident.
In the end, the two remain together.

Jane Eyre is an extremely passionate novel and this really is the best version because it shows not only their passion for eachother but their passion as individual people which I find other versions don’t show as well. I do not think it is too flirty at all - instead, I think “finally a version that captures all this sexual tension oozing throughout the book!” I found other versions either Rochester too harsh and cold or Jane too prim and proper. Jane has always been a very passionate woman, from her outbursts as a child to knowing a passionless marriage with St John is inconceivable. Her ‘innocence’ is only physical as throughout the book she is discovering her internal passion. She fancies Rochester almost from the first moment when he falls from his horse, even though she doesn’t realise but the book strongly hints the effect this has on her as she sees his strong dark face all the way home and even wishes to see him again when walking back. He’s the first man she’s met in this way and from that moment onwards is working out what those sexual feelings are. He completely arouses them in her so much so that just being around him makes her physically stronger and alive ‘I gathered flesh and strength.’ She’s restrained because of status and the idea he is marrying Blanche. Rochester on the other hand is fascinated with her from the start having little faith in women returning home failed at finding true love. The falling of the horse scene is a perfect symbol of how Rochester has been riding through life in one direction but then Jane ‘throws’ him off course. In the book we find out that after their first encounter he secretly watches her in the library but still keeps his distance because he too is working out his feelings as she challenges him like no other woman has and resembles everything pure he was searching for. He had till now been looking for the perfect woman by bedding mistresses throughout Europe, knowing that’s all he can have as he can’t marry. With Jane he doesn’t know what to do having now found the perfect woman but knows she would never be his mistress and that he can’t/shouldn’t marry her. He’s desperate to know how Jane feels about him to guide him on what to do next. He hints at her whether she would find happiness even though it could be ‘wrong’. He loves being in her company and wants to find ways to bring out her passion and see whether she has true feelings for him. Trying to make her jealous with Blanche is the only way he knows to uncover her feelings as in the book he basically says you can’t be jealous if you’ve never felt love. He doesn’t expect her to reveal her feelings so passionately and when she does he just has to propose which is why he says ‘god forgive me, I am to keep her.’ Anyway, long comment but for anyone who says this version is too passionate, the whole book oozes with sexual tension and Toby and Ruth have absolutely mastered this!

This is really nicely edited! I always thought it strange that many people feel Wuthering Heights a more compelling love story than Jane Eyre. WH always struck me as a tale of revenge and obsession, whereas JE is a love story in the purest sense of the term.

I love this one so much, Toby does a PHENOMENAL job, my only complaint is that after reading the book I feel like they did not put enough of Mr. Rochesters dialogue into the short series, it was almost perfect but honestly they needed to put more of his dialogue into this short series to really understand him, his character is much more throughly developed in the book and you get a much better sense of his anguish, and his searching heart.

Es sin duda la mejor versión de Jane Eyre. La actriz se come el papel y emociona con la sensibilidad que destila. Yo me atrevería a decir que muestra toda la sensibilidad que las palabras de la autora dejan impresas en las páginas del libro. 💞

Of all the versions .. this is my favorite. Ruth Wilson is perfect ..credible and beguiling ... Toby an excellent actor ..I thought may have been too good looking for the part .. a personal assessment which I'm sure many women will disagree with. Anyway ... I savour this excellent english production.

Absolutely beautiful! I really thought this was a professional trailer when it started. You've done such a good job of the editing, and have a real talent. You've captured the theme and key scenes perfectly. The one thing I would say you've missed is Rochester calling to Jane. That would make sense of Jane's return. However, it's still lovely, and the music's gorgeous. My most favourite adaptation of my most favourite book.

I was first introduced to Jane Eyre through the 2011 version and I loved that version, but my friend told me it was really lacking elements from the book. I went back and read it saw what she meant: the Jane in the novel is spunky, feisty, and passionate. The 2011 version also cut out a lot of the truly gothic elements (they took out the scene with the veil!) and made the whole thing rather cold and austere. Now I swear by the 2006 version because it’s so much truer to the book. Only thing I hold against is for some reason cutting out that wonderful conversation where Jane tells Rochester she must leave him.

In the book Jane is innocence to Edward, she is his instrument for redemption and new life, his way of getting back to who and what he has always dreamed of. This movie did not portray that theme in my opinion at all

I agree, she is a good actress but in my opinion she fails a bit as Jane. She did not portray the innocence of the character as you stated and Toby, although a superb Rochester, wasn't as deep as the the book. They did a good job though, although I prefer Samantha Morton as Jane and would have liked a little less playfulness (especially that scene in the bed!!).
