So, I usually like period pieces where everything is historically acurate - the costumes, the make up, the hair, the casting, the sets, the dialogue, the pets, the books, the music and everything in between. I have stopped watching shows and movies because they weren´t accurate, or never watched them at all, despite them having amazing reviews .... and then comes along Bridgerton, and I don´t give a crap about all the things I just listed, because ... well .... just look at it. I´m so exited for season 2
@LacrimosanByakkon4 жыл бұрын
i know that historical accuracy is important, but bridgerton is set in a sort of alternative universe, so i really liked the costumes, hair etc. even if they were not accurate :)
@wendyscott84254 жыл бұрын
I like historical accuracy, too, although not living 200 years ago, it's kind of hard to be sure what is accurate and what is not. Besides, a lot of life back then wasn't pretty. But I'm with you. This show was a feast for the eyes in more ways than one, and the music was gorgeous as well. I also appreciated how no one got hideously hurt. They used very little theatrical blood, which to me was quite refreshing. Yes, guys fought some spectacular fights, but I wasn't grossed out by them other than to wonder how they did them, like the fight Antony had with Simon in the club after they returned to London because of Colin's scandal. That was amazing! And we didn't see Featherington's demise either. If I have to have historical accuracy, I'll watch a documentary. :)

I'm also a stickler for accuracy and the Harry Potter movies pain me because I'm such a big fan of the books. The Price and Prejudice movie absolutely delighted me because it was so freaking accurate. Downton Abbey seems fairly accurate for the early twentieth century. I haven't read the Bridgerton books. There are shows one expects to be true to the world that EXISTS. And then there are shows that are ON POINT regarding the world that SHOULD ideally exist. Bridgerton does that for me. It accurately shows a parallel world, that our world should have been like all along. Even the problematic practices (males making decisions for the females, physical violence by berbrooke, etc.) are shown in a progressive, solution oriented way. We see the characters grow as all of us SHOULD ideally grow (prime example, Anthony).
@eyeswithhope133 жыл бұрын
Bridgerton is meant to be an escapist show. The novels it's based off of are also not very historically accurate, it's just a fun made-up world for romantics.

I loved their dynamic when they were friends (when they were holding up the ruse). But was anyone else bothered when daphne refused to stop when Simon said no though?? like if their genders had been reversed people would be shouting rape Edit: I am going to add that while my opinion on this scene hasn’t changed, I would like to note the fact that media doesn’t exist to be perfect. Characters don’t exist to be perfect. They need flaws and they need to make mistakes and even commit *gasp* problematic things. These issues exist for the sake of a story and character development. You can enjoy a problematic character or piece of media, they exist to be enjoyed and criticised in equal measure.

It is brought up in the book where daphne later introspects on whether she forced him or was it the heat of moment where both were caught up in the pleasures and she decides she actually did not do it only because she wanted a baby.....also in the book, simon was drunk and hungover and he was the one to initiate it by lusting for her even while sleeping off the alcohol and he didn't say no except at the last minute...by which time the job was done. Idk why the series chose to portray and interpret that complex moment in such a non consensual rape like way😣😣...its problematic to say the least.

Everyhing about this series hit the mark every single time: the music, costumes, choreography, screen shots, etc. A beautiful cross section of regency society to its mores, its subtleties, the relationship to upper staff, the vulnerability of lower staff. And perhaps how the women who were powerless nonethless wielded great power through their ability to spread the word. The problem the rich and titled young men encountered with match making mamas is brilliantly displayed in some of the early scenes when entire gaggles descend on the poor man vying for his attention. Also how ruthlessly these same mamas sell their daughters on the marriage mart and the success or failure of said daughter depends on the number of suitors she has, the number of proposals she receives and the pressure to engage the richest and or most titled prize on the market. And we cannot forget the fragility of reputation that could so easily be lost often through no fault of the girls, who were kept deliberately ignorant so they would be less likely to experiment or for fear if they had too much academic knowledge when they went to their marriage bed that they would be thought unchaste. Much like woman who were portrayed in Gone With the Wind, they were trained from the cradle to marry well with little thought given on how to manage the relationship after the wedding. The were taught estate management but not marital managment. I also like the fact that they addressed childbirth which was still a deadly business although marginally less so for society women having access to clean linen, the best doctors and midwives and the best food. Also since the births were at home the younger chidren were exposed to the more harrowing aspects in terms of sounds. The birth of Hyacinth must have been a problem delivery given that it was her 8th child and should have been easier unless there were complications. These young girls were frightened to begin with and this would only add to their terror since the were kept in ignorance. This ignorance explains why it took Daphne so long to figure out what Simon was doing to prevent conception and it was only after they made love in reasonably good light was she able to put the pieces together because up until then he was able to shield the evidence fairly well [according to the book]. So the idea was to throw these young ladies and scions together in genteel and highly supervised settings to find their mates yet they had very little opportunity to get to know one another before they were engaged. And the latter could be arranged without their consent which we saw in the series. What was most interesting is the criteria the women used as opposed to that to that of the guardian/father used. It was a business tranaction and not based on sentiment, fondness, or love. rather on lineage, dowry, rank or land acquisition. Lastly, the series brings into sharp relief the precarious world of the courtesan who took lovers without any security. Once it was over it was over with no long term care built in which is why they usually tried to get paid in jewels which would appreciate in value and could be sold. In this series we have Sienna an extremely talented opera singer who is paid a low wage to sing and is relying on lovers to supplement her income. We cannot forget Marina which brings into sharp relief to what happens to the fallen: deserted by her lover [ after all he could have married her before he went off with Wellington], no where to turn to and tries to make the best of the situation. Being from the country she would probably know which herbs were useful as abortion agents but she didn't allow them sufficient time to infuse and possible too far along in her pregnancy to be effective. It was also not uncommin for aging men who did not have a living heir to accept a pregnant wife to prevent the estate from reverting back to the crown upon their death. Pen tried everything to protect Colin both out of love and decency except one: she should have given Marina a choice: either she tells Colin about the pregancy or Pen would. The actress did a brillant job with this character because one did not fall completely out of sympathy with her despite her calculated efforts to ensnare Colin. IMO she was attracted to the life he could offer her and that might have been part of the motivation to try and abort. In the end she accepted George's brother who was very, much in sympathy with her but she was determined to be miserable and forced to retire to the country rather than the exciting life in London. She may not have wanted to come to London but certainly began to enjoy the attention she was receiving. I felt sorry for her baby because I don't think she ever loved it. Nonetheless one pity's her because of her limited options in an unforgiving and ruthless world where such transgressions were held up for ridicule and life lessons for others. All she needed was a scarlett A. Note: the man is never blamed unless he abandons his reponsbility. He will be sanctioned by his peers for failing to support a bastard but not for raping the maid who became the mother of that bastard. And it was rape through coercion because the staff had no defense and less voice against the master of the house. It was particularly risky for parlor maids who were chosen for that role d/t their attractiveness.
