Nostalgic. 😢 In the 70s my sister and i played on that "pontje" in Durgerdam. Sunday on the boat with family, sailing, eating scampi's, swimming. I now inherited that boat. Emotional episode for me .

Watching Aladino prepare for setting sail was purely poetic. His moves as he tied up the fenders removed and folded and stowed the sail covers, raising the rigging and trimming sails... his movements were so fluid and natural, a pure joy to witness! I'm an old man, I've been on and around boats all my life and it was a beautiful thing to witness.
@princeboheme4 жыл бұрын
I fully agree with you. You put into words my exact thoughts and feelings. Aladino's swift and fluid movements were like a choreography or a tai-chi session. As I listened to his comments on all the old boats, I sensed that he is a true aesthete.

The wonderful thing about this channel -- and what keeps me watching -- is that you focus on the place you are visiting and explain it. Your explanation about the different spoken dialects is very insightful and spot on. In Belgium there is Flemish and French and a similar defense of identities. Many YT sailing channels would just miss stuff like this because they are not going as slow as you. It's easy to watch these videos and worthwhile to sometimes even watch them a second time because there's so much to see and experience.

Lots of luck and joy for Magic Carpet and her crew in 2021. Ever since I began 'following' you, you've proven to have a great insight in Europe and you're doing it again in my native Netherlands. Great seeing my country and my native Amsterdam and Noord-Holland through the eyes of foreigners, even though you're 'cheating' by means of your past experiences! Do come back often!

I don't think that you quite captured in English the appeal of the Anderson winches. Their main beauty doesn't come from their shiny prettiness, but rather from what an engineer in America would call their elegance. Elegance means that all parts of them are made to serve a purpose so well that that makes them beautiful. Aladino touches on it when he says that the stainless steel keeps them from corroding in a way that chrome plating wouldn't. They don't have the stainless to be pretty, but rather to fit their purpose better. You pay more for them, but not for the name, for superior function, and that superior function makes them pretty:)

As always, Excellent videography and story! I love going on video adventures with you two. Especially enjoyed the bike ride adventure! I appreciate your accurate explanation/insight into cultural divergence. 7/8ths of my Great Grandparents were from Friesland. 3/4ths of my grandparents grew to teenage years in Friesland. They held firmly to language differences even here in the USA. Not to mention food preferences & cooking styles. And religious practices were by far and away the BIG cultural distinction.

The soundtrack is calm and soothing matching the video perfectly. The passage north through the continent was stressful to watch at times with all the relentless barges & industrial shoreline. The hand operated and traditional sailing barges were more relaxing. This was the best video so far showing a balance of your individual talents!

Thanks for the tours of Nederland. I am looking forward to Marken. I was there in 1962. The Zuiderzee was just being drained. I have watched this with -3degrees C (25 degrees F) here in England, so some contrast. I like what you said about distance and culture in Europe. Here in England different regions had and to some degree still have massive distances in character and also speech. A Londoner would have really struggled to understand my father, a Yorkshireman. I do worry that these differences are being obliterated by modernity and progress and the homogeneity which that brings. I can also see that the Dutch small towns resemble the small towns on the East coast of England especially in Essex and Suffolk. Thanks, great video again! Happy new year
