Seasick: As a former offshore worker I have had to deal with many crew-changes in many types of boats, countries and conditions, sometimes being confined in a rolling boat at night in a bad sea with no horizon to look at, smell of diesel oil and other odours I don't want to mention. One very valuable tip against seasickness I learned from a fellow worker, was to wear ear-plugs as soon as conditions were too much. It worked magic for me and (almost) everyone I could pass this info to. Hopefully it will work for you too, at least you can try, it doesn't cost much! Thank you fot your videos, stay safe, fair winds! Patrick
@fiddleswithbikes3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. I'll try that. I never get sick in the choppy waters of San Francisco Bay, but it the slower motion of the open sea will take me down in about 6 hours if I don't start off a trip with Scopolamine. As the patch wears off I get my sea legs and can begin to spend more time below on the second day or so.

This is for you Maya! I sailed a lot in my life and knew so many sailors some of whom had seasickness...If there is one thing I have noticed with absolute certainty it is that seasickness always comes..but always..to sensitive and spiritual people. It's just a check thing I have repeatedly noticed on my travels in stormy oceans... So..dear Maya, I'm telling you that not only do you not have to feel embarrassed when you feel seasick..the opposite is true! Be proud of yourself! You are in the wonderful company of the most amazing, sensitive and highly spiritual people I have ever known in my life! All of these wonderful people, without exception, had seasickness! :)

About the plastics..... You were correct if you'd throw it away. When recycled (very do-able and happens all over the place in NL) the plastic wrapping keeps the vegetables fresh far longer and reduces food wastage considerably. But we MUST recycle. If not, you are completely correct, then it's a bad thing. Nice episode!

I completely agree about the plastic bags. However, a suggestion if you're feeling brave enough. When you get to the check out, as you pack your groceries in your own bags, take them out of their bags and leave the plastic at the check out. We did it for a few times in a big supermarket in the UK and, eventually, they stopped complaining and provided bins. Small steps but an achievement of sorts. Every progressive movement has to start somewhere.
@johanneslidenberg24093 жыл бұрын
AH is indeed one of the worst probably, but one argument that gets used in favour of plastic packaging of fresh-veg is they last a lot longer, but then use compostable plastics. Doesn't make any sense if you sell chopped onion...

When I was a teenager, I sacrificed quite a few breakfasts to the IJsselmeer and Markermeer. The waves are really short and irregular. But all those towns are so worthwhile to visit. My favourites are Hoorn and Enkhuizen, It might not make sense anymore as I do not know where you are but the Zuiderzeemuseum is something to visit. It shows how people lived around the Zuiderzee before it was closed by the Afsluitdijk. The drone showed the boats that are part of the museum. In fact, you can drop your anchor just in front of the museum, or at least that used to be possible. I have enjoyed all your videos, but those of the Netherlands most of all. Your enthusiasm makes them a joy to view. Totally ;)

So great to see a young couple cruising a well-sorted and handled boat! Any chance of a rig rundown for your music recording setup? Aladino, if you have a chance it would be great to get a status report on the salvaging of the historic Elbe No 5, which was known as the Wander Bird during her years as a sail training ship and her long history on San Francisco Bay. Not sure, but believe the salvage/rebuild may be happening in the Hamburg area. Maya, is it possible to email to your website a paper on how to avoid seasickness? It was developed not only from personal experience, but also decades of observing crew members with varying experience levels. This included lots of time offshore with science and dive teams operating on boats, people who are often not really boaters, and the many things one can do wrong and likely suffer, or do right and avoid the horrible malice. Most people following the guidelines are amazed at the difference it all makes. It would be interesting to see if it helped you.

When I feel seasick it helps me when I stand up and keep my eyes on the distant horizon at all times. Looking into the cabin or another person in the cockpit will bring on the seasickness full power and once I get seasick its too late. I noticed that you sit down and you are looking at dino/camera. That will make most people seasick. Next time you get that feeling stand at the door of the cabin, hold on to the boat to keep your balance, keep your eyes level and on the horizon.

It maybe comforting for you to know that even seasoned fishermen from Urk, who travel the oceans, do get seasick in the IJsselmeer. It's the choppy seas that do it, you can herdly avoid it. It's the only time I get seasick when I came back from the North Sea with its long swell to the unprdedictable choppy waves on the IJsselmeer.

So as an old school photographer when leaving a camera unattended on a tripod ALWAYS hang a weight off the base of the tripod (they almost all have a hook or loop at the base inside the legs for this). You can hang a heavy backpack from it, or get bags that you can fill with a few rocks or sand/etc for this purpose. It'll save the camera by keeping the tripod heavy and weighed down so it doesn't blow over. (IE it'll move the center of gravity DOWN.)

Interesting comments about weather helm. But there are other reasons for it, too. For one, it is almost impossible to design a monohull without it. The sail effort, when the boat heels, is necessarily on the lee side of the boat. Therefore the thrust produced by the sails tends to turn the boat into the wind. Another reason is that it is beneficial to use the necessary rudder area to assist the keel in holding the boat to windward, Therefore, if you release the steering the rudder the windward "lift" of the rudder will be relaxed, turning the boat to windward.

So Zuiderzee, now IJsselmeer (the Dutch ij or as capital "letter" IJ is pronounced like the Italian ei and the Dutsh ei is pronounced like that too) is the flood plane of the "IJssel" river and sedimentaiton area of the North Sea. The entire Netherlands are like that too, just a little bit higher. Rhine/Rhein/Rijn/Rhenum river, Maas river (Meuse, Mosa) and North Sea. Flood plane, sedimentation plane. One big river delta into sea.
