This luxury home restoration in Battery Point Tasmania by Archier features an original 1850s Georgian cottage in the front with a contemporary glazed pavilion extension out the back.

The owners of Hampden Road House were transitioning into retirement when they commissioned an architectural alteration and addition project to their 1850s Georgian cottage located in Battery Point, Tasmania. Having the space to share time together while also having the freedom to pursue interests independently was a key focus of the design. The existing house was a former milk depot, and the goal was to design the house to be unapologetically modern while remaining sympathetic to the heritage and history of its surroundings.
While the project included an extension, maintaining the history and charm of the cottage was not only important to the owners, the Heritage status of the property dictated that it as a requirement. The addition has met Heritage Council requirements, while also providing a modern and comfortable space for the owners.
In a complementary way, the new pavilion, with its use of concrete, glass, steel, marble, and timber, references the surrounding buildings built 130 years ago, while being clearly modern in design matched with a luxury interior design. The addition creates a seamless transition between the old and new, as the cottage is linked to the rear façade through a glazed passage. A door is built between the main house and the rear extension to create privacy at both ends of the home.

I am absolutely blown away by how the architect transformed a very unassuming home into a wonderland. I have always had a concept floating around my mind for the longest time as to how I would love my home to feel like. It is ultimately centered on how the home makes one feel inside. This home captures that feeling. Obviously, I am quite partial to dark walls that keep you enveloped in warmth like a cocoon. Once the light streams in, you can still linger and sip a great bottle of beer or wine and not have to think of work. Too much emphasis has been placed on function and work spaces that they have bled the feeling of simply being happy in it out of every modern design. I appreciate your taste and your show's producer in picking the homes you have showcased. To be honest, I have only seen 2, the other one being that gallery home built within a warehouse. But I have just subscribed to your channel, utterly surprised by what I am seeing from Australia!

Loved the courtyard and pantry. Lucy's dress really matching with the pantry timber and she blended very well! :{) I always amazed how the owner took time to restore original cottage and make them look new and refreshing.
