John said he wrote this when he was a bit depressed in a hard time, then he thought of all the love of his fans, the letters and cards and thoughts and prayers. He went home and wrote this. He said its his best song ever.

I absolutely love your reactions and usually hear what you hear but I have to admit in this case I think John Denver sounds the way he always sounded which is fantastic to my ears but I don’t hear him singing differently as you did. It is an absolutely beautiful song and we have John Denver to thank you for writing it

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. It does sound like John Denver! Saw him in concert many times and he always matched his beautiful, rich voice to the message of the song.

I also agree, John Denver sounding like John Denver. No trying to sound different than normal, always smooth and soothing.

I don’t think John was trying to sing differently, but I agree his method had changed a bit from his early days. It sounds more like a formally trained voice by the mid-80s than in 1972 when it was still great but more natural than “trained.” I think much of that was being in the business and having access to such training. The differences over the years are subtle, but I hear it. That said, Denver’s skills as a singer, showman and songwriter were a gift to the world. His music has felt like the background soundtrack of my life since I first heard him fifty years ago. I believe that his first wife Annie said this was her personal favorite of all the songs he wrote, even outdoing Annie’s Song. But I believe it was Milt Okun who got them together for this duet. I remember it being a total surprise on the radio back then. This was pre-internet. The radio stations claimed their switchboards lit up when it went on the air.

@@edwardstowers7272 At the time of his death, I heard and read various opinions about how his voice was improving as he aged and there was speculation about how far he could take it. There was also speculation about his increasingly better guitar work. I don’t think we were reacting to the comment about his voice being “different” for this song. Those of us who saw him in concert many times and followed his career closely didn’t really hear subtle changes in real time. What we heard, as you pointed out, John always giving his best performance that was in his ability at that time. No complaints that he was constantly improving!! BTW, I have several “favorites” that will likely never make it to a reaction because they didn’t have the commercial success as other singles. Too bad, they say a lot about what a good person and great talent he was.

As John Denver matured so did his voice; he had a rich, full tone that was very operatic like. If you listen to any of his songs, live, from the Wildlife Concert, you will come to understand and appreciate the beautiful, mature voice of John Denver.

I have to disagree with Harri. To me he sounds like himself in many of his other songs. He is of course sometimes adapting, like singers do when they duet or harmonize. I’ve listened to his music for decades - he is amazing, and his voice has “moods” if you will. ❤️❤️

I agree with your synopsis of John Denver's maturity, in the depth of his voice, and also the fact that he wrote this tune, and teamed up with one of the finest operettic voices the world has ever known, just brings everything about this song, full circle.

I remember hearing this on the radio as a young teen, at the height of new wave, the tail end of punk and the beginnings of hip hop. It really stood out, particularly the harmonies, i was inexplicably moved by it but it was very ‘uncool’ to admit loving it! Hearing it again now it had exactly the same impact, it’s just a stunning track.

When they first recorded this duet the record label didn't really have plans to distribute it. This was before it was common to have Duets and in particular before it was common to cross genres like pop and classical Then one day a promoter went to a radio station in Philadelphia and ended up meeting with the station owner. He mentioned the recording to the station owner who asked if he could hear it but they couldn't get it to play on the record player in in the owner's office so the owner said play it over the air, and within minutes the station was flooded with phone calls asking for them to play the record again the station ended up playing it every hour on the hour and from there it spread like wildfire, all because they couldn't get it to play on the owners record player

I think the word you were looking for to anchor the word that encompasses Love, you thoughtfully used the word touching. I recently read a story in which the word tender was used quite effectively in a manner to describe that situation. For myself, John recorded this some time during the time I spent in Alaska, and the first time I heard it I just melted. John has been one of my influencers since Rocky Mountain High; Plácido's voice, like butter, need I say more? Your reaction was 100% 🤗

You say it was an unusual song that John wrote...you haven't dived deep enough into JD Harri! :) Try What Are We Making Weapons For, Ravens Child, No One. Many many more deep tracks. It would be interesting to hear what you think of those. If you listen or react to Weapons, the Farm Aid live concert clip is the one.

John Denver's natal chart only has the Sun in kendras (the four main pillars in the chart). He has a Sidereal Gemini rising. The Sun therefore rules the 3rd house of music and the Moon rules the 2nd house of singing. We always take the Sun and Moon as a pair. So his Sun gives him a beautiful singing voice and the ability to compose. Unfortunately the 2nd house is a first class death house and the 3rd house has to do with engineering weaponry (or marvels) so he died in a fatality crash.

Glad you enjoyed. A beautiful classic, clearly it stands the test of time. Fun fact: Koreans treat this song, sung by the Great Domingo and the beloved singer/songwriter Denver, like their unofficial national love song. Without fail, at least twice a month, someone in Korea uploads a video valentine montage with this song as the soundtrack. I've been a student of the living legend Domingo for years, and I search here daily for any new examples of his artistry, so that's how I know. The greatest tenor of all time* also sings this with his son, Placi Jr, a composer himself and whose voice shares much of the same qualities as that of his dad. Now about that thumbnail: why is it that you picked a picture of young Denver but not of Domingo at the age he recorded this with him? 🤔 It doesn't make sense. Paz y salud! _*It used to be Caruso, but Domingo overtook the title some time ago. Domingo has broken all of Caruso's records, set new others and has a much more consequential and abundant body of work._

If you listen to John singing No One, from late 69ish, his voice is full and rich. It just matured as he grew older. Also live his voice had more body than on the cheap RCA recordings imho. Yes, John wrote the song. I personally prefer just John singing it, more emotion.
