Just wanted to say a huge thank you for this weeks vlog we really enjoyed it. Every time you pass through Abram , Wigan and Appley Bridge (our old stomping grounds )we feel homesick. As child I used to hitch a ride on the coal barges between the bridges at Bamfurlong and use to spend many a happy hour at the Scotchmans flash . We haven’t been home since Covid , we’re long overdue for a visit back home from here in Oz. Thanks again made us proud .

Thank you for showing the old boat in Bedford Basin Paul. I can get quite emotional when I think of what people went through to save others and the bravery of thousands that allows us to live free. Anthony, Sooty and Sweep were my absolute favourites as a child and they never even spoke!

Amazing night out and sooty and sweep were there too ! Amazing. Great vlog as usual, just realised we are still a week behind. Hope Paul is ok, I’ve had detached retinas and tears in both my eyes and it really is a scary time as you only have two and they aren’t easily replaceable 😮, but the health service are brilliant and the technology comes on really fast. ☮️

I recall the first time I heard about Paul - David Johns from Cruising the Cut was doing a video on how narrow boaters earn a living. David showed some of Paul’s art work and said ‘Paul’s a magician’ and I thought he said that because Paul’s art is so incredible 😄 and it certainly is! It really is Susan and thank you. I hate wearing suits, but every now and again, it is good. People have questioned the £1 test as it isn’t round 😂 . 7 hours is definitely enough for us. It isn’t a chore in good weather though. It has been horrific with the storm but Liverpool is so beautiful, you can almost forget. Fingers crossed spring is here to stay soon. Well that sure was a trip down memory lane for me. Wigan pier......wow....spent many weekends there dancing the night away. Heinz soup factory on that route, along with Uncle Joe's Mint Balls factory. Those were the days. Do they still make uncle joes mint balls ??????. Bedford Basin. Our friends used to moor there. Did you know Matthew Corbert , Harry Corbert's son of Sooty fame, had a NB I think he moored in Lymm if my memory is correct.

Sad to see history falling apart. I worked in an aged care home not that long ago, and one of the residents helped bring soldiers back across the channel as a sailor. Fascinating to see your development of the electric boat. We watch with interest as our boat is all electric but we’ve been moored up all winter so just starting to get moving. We have a Lynch Swordfish 16kW motor. Good to see Sooty and Sweep - appropriate as they used to live next to the canal in Lymm (well Matthew Corbett did), in the White House by the bridge. Hello Paul, Anthony and Dexter-Dog Loving the start of this week’s Vlog, It was nice to see Dexter. Doesn’t Anthony look smart in a suit, and likewise Paul in his Tucks? Two very smart gentlemen. I love magic. I never want to know how it is done. As long as it looks unbelievable, and then I am amazed and so happy. How nice that your friend Philip is now president of the IBM. How kool was that having Sooty and Sweep make an appearance? That did not look like Mathew with Sooty and Sweep? It’s great that Darren has worked his magic hands on your electrics on the boat. It was nice that another Paul allowed you to moor at the Bedford Basin. That was interesting about your List. Was the list due to new items coming aboard? Glad you have sorted out the problem now. Those weights did look heavy. My goodness those banks were so high above the water-line (near Wigan) . After Anthony had cycled back to the boat probably totally worn out, Paul put Anthony on Lock Duty. Poor Anthony, and what was so funny Paul was not going to slow down while Anthony tried to jump to the bank. Anthony had to tell Paul to slow down!!!! Hey Spoolbox. That was a fun packed weekend. We rarely dress up, so it was nice to have an occasion to do so. Philip is a really nice guy and a well deserved presidency of the IBM. Loved meeting Sooty and Sweep. It wasn’t Matthew Corbett. He sold the rights to Richard Cadell. He is a really nice guy. He has been owner of Sooty and Sweep for quite a few years now. Darren is amazing. He did a re wire of the batteries and altered the settings to be more appropriate for the lithium setup. He does industrial solar installs as part of his work, so certainly knows his stuff. Really kind of Paul to let us moor there and for the weights. We are not totally sure what caused the list, but we can only assume that it was the additional stuff added. The inverter itself weighs a lot more than the original. The banks were high. Didn’t think I would get back aboard. The cycle ride must have been about 15 miles. It helps with my goal to get trim. After the locks in Wigan, I was done in and Paul had to take over. He never slows down for me to get on! He always says he is going slow so must be a perception thing, or he is looking for me to fall in so he can put it in the vlog 🤔. Fab that you know the area. @NarrowboatLifeUnlocked thanks for that , we have Magpies here in Australia, they are a protected species, they're very aggressive during nesting time and are known to swoop aggressively, they can hurt you if not aware . Councils put up notices near the nesting area . If they know you usually you're not seen as a threat . I walk up our hill all year and a couple of birds near the top usually ignore me during this time . They are very intelligent creatures .

Hey Eric. Glad you enjoy the vlogs. I am not sure that would work as a water tank would only give accurate ballast when full. Ours is integral to the boat so adding an additional one, for us, wouldn’t be possible. You can get weights filled with water, but they would take up more room than the cast iron ones we ended up getting. Hope you have a fabulous week ❤️

Hey Sue. The weight is negligible I guess when you consider the boat weights in excess of 14 tonnes. It shouldn’t make much difference in fuel etc but will increase the water draft a bit I guess. We did consider covering one of the skylights with solar but they let in so much light. We love the quiet cruising too. Just amazing. Have a good weekend ❤️

Hey guys. We had a lovely weekend. It really was fun filled if not a little hectic 😂. Spring hasn’t sprung yet. We have had a few storms recently and more rain! Just when it promises to turn a corner, another storm comes 😂. Florida sounds like nice weather though. Paul was nearer to Liverpool and I was nearer to Manchester growing up. What is your current situation with the electrics? I have noted the previous changes...Motor, Generator Propeller; but more trouble? This is getting rather interesting for me as in next 7-9 months, am looking to make one of 2 decisions - to buy and existing narrowboat, or get one built. I originally loved your boat build, (with possibly smaller skylights and more solar panels, and was thinking same builder...hence my rather now intense interest if you still having issues. Also if I buy a reasonable existing boat, do I convert it to solar and electric motor etc

Hey James. All of the changes seem to have a positive impact. We still had some outstanding issues and Darren has been amazing and re wired the batteries and changed some crucial settings. This seems to have contributed in a reduction in diesel usage but the next few months will be more of a test. It may be worth you coming to Electrika if you can make it and discuss some more technical stuff with others. I agree that more solar would be better. Hope you have a good weekend ❤️

Welcome to the channel. Without worrying about the running costs, we would go electric. We have had some issues that involved a lot of running costs and if you had asked me a few months ago, I would definitely have said diesel. The canals are a fab place to walk the dog, be careful as this is how we started 😉

Hi both, love your channel which I’ve been watching from the start. Can you help me with the answer to a question, is the floor in your boat solid wood, engineered wood or veneer? I have carpet down in our boat which really isn’t very practical especially in a muddy winter. I want to put a wood floor down but I’m concerned about damp and mopping with veneer. Solid wood will be seriously expensive and I don’t know how engineered flooring would stand up to damp either. Any input would be very gratefully received 😊

Thanks John. Glad you enjoy the vlogs. I think the wood is solid oak. We have a cut overlay carpet , but this is more for Dexter to stop him slipping. We do find the wood cold but we haven’t seen any damp. So long as the boat is well ventilated and heated (need to find that balance), it should be fine. We have friends that went with engineered wood and they find that works for them too. Hope that helps a little. ❤️

Hey. We aren’t sure. The boat did list from launch but nothing like that. We can only assume the weight of the new inverter and generator but we were told that the list wasn’t present when it left the yard after the gennie fitting. It definitely was a lot of weight but thankfully, it seems to have resolved. Have a great weekend. ❤️

That was fun seeing a bit from the Magician's dinner. I'd still love to see one of Paul's shows, any chance? So, I may have missed something. You were going to have your electrics looked at by an independent electrician, right? Has that happened, was there a result? Also wondering about those weights. If they're heavy enough to level the boat when moored, will they affect your cruising? I know some of the canals can be quite shallow, will the weights put you deeper in the water? Will you consume more energy cruising with the weights on board? Maybe dumb questions, if so, sorry! 😊

Hey Debba. We had a fab night. It is difficult for Paul to show his shows on KZbin because there are kids there. We haven’t said anything about the electrics yet as it was only just done so not much time to test them but we do feel like we have turned a corner. Great question re the weights. It will make the boat sit slightly lower in the canal but not enough to be an issue (we hope). As for the fuel, the weights we put in are negligible to what the boat weighs overall so shouldn’t make much of a difference. Not daft questions at all. Pretty logical. Have a good weekend ❤️

G'day What an marvellous boat Hybrid electric I luv it I live offgrid on 10 acres of bush in Oz Solar with batteries and a Honda 7kva petrol generator So although I'm not mobile Our systems are very similar I essentially haven't needed to run my generator for a decade After upgrading to new millennium tech Your setup is awesome McMaybe I ought look for a houseboat here Just interested to know how your system handled the 7 hour journey How much energy you took from your batteries and how much sun you got etc Did you need the diesel engine? I'd guess you didn't Otherwise you would have been likely to mention it Great work 🖖 👻
