Another banger! Funny, the situation in our living room is in trying to draw the huge space, in. It’s something like, 24x24 with a 14 ft vaulted wood ceiling with big beams. But one section by the front door was damaged in a fire, so it’s the same color as the whole space- masking tape white. I started by painting the front door Behr’s Carbon black in high gloss. It’s already added weight to the white ceiling above it, without painting the ceiling itself. I’m going to continue this color on the trim of the two sliding glass doors, and windows around the room. It’s already feeling cozier, just after the door! I wish I had done this sooner! I already painted the lower kitchen cabinets in this color. It’s open concept. So it ties in nicely with the adjoining living room. It gives it such depth when looking from the bedroom, off the kitchen.

I think I didn’t do it sooner because I was afraid of it being too high contrast and too busy. But after considering you color drench a small space to make it feel bigger, I decided that to make a color drenched large space feel cozier, would be to do the opposite of what it had and adding a stopping point for the eyes. Just like you put the bear at the back of the room. And it worked! Everyone is always talking about how to make a place feel bigger. Sometimes, you need to draw it in. The human scale will thank you.

Oh, and being that we’re also in the mountains, the black color makes sense to the surroundings. Everything else in the space is cream, dark wood furniture and a few plants. I already planned on doing an 8 foot mural over the fireplace, right below the 14 ft peak. I can’t wait for it to be done! It’s going to be lit! 🔥
