Brakes are one of the simplest jobs to do on a car, and the Brembo design used on Maseratis is particularly straightforward. I can’t fathom spending the ridiculous labor markup when its a quick service that can be done on your own driveway or in your own garage. I’d rather save the money on such a simple maintenance procedure and use that money on taking a road trip in my Maserati QP or on performance parts. To change the front pads, it’s as simple as removing one bolt and two pins per brake assembly. To change the front rotors, it’s two more bolts to remove the caliper and a bolt or two on the rotor itself. The rears are similar, but to there is no bolt to remove to just change the rear pads. There are some consumables that need to be used such as thread lock, brake pad anti-squeal grease, and brake cleaner but these are readily available at any auto parts store and are quite inexpensive. The labor is comprised of a few minutes of using simple hand tools, and I opine that the simplicity of the labor involved does not even remotely constitute the labor costs charged by a dealer. The markup on brakes is generally one of the highest labor markups in the automotive world. In the words of a Mercedes-Benz Service Technician, the biggest mistake consumers make when getting new brake pads and/or rotors on their car is letting a dealer overcharge them for a job they can easily do at home. Labor costs vary dramatically from dealership to dealership and from city to city, based on the union and the dealership’s profit margins. Similarly, changing oil at home can be a lot cheaper. For approximately $100 for the oil, filter, o-rings, and crush washer, I can save over $350 on an oil change. My local dealer charges over $450 for an oil and filter change, which is obnoxious in my opinion. I prefer to do my oil changes on more frequent intervals than prescribed by the manufacturer, and I always use Pennzoil Platinum Euro. This isn’t paying to play, it’s being taken advantage of by dealers who assume their customers rarely want to get their hands dirty. I had my Quattroporte into the dealership for a warranty repair and they recommended a brake job, asking nearly $2,800 for installing front and rear pads and rotors. The labor markup is over $1,000. I respectfully declined and decided to do them myself. Yes, brakes are a critical safety system, but it is very difficult to mess up a simple pad and rotor job. Moreover, there are aftermarket parts companies that make exact replacement brake parts for Maserati. As long as they hold a European ECE-R90 certification, you can install aftermarket pads and rotors with confidence. While Brembo is the gold standard in brakes, there exact replacement parts that perform exactly the same for less out of pocket expense without the brand name markup. Always do your homework on a brake manufacturer to see the quality of the product, don’t just follow price. Again, the ECE-R90 certification is very important. TÜV certification is also a plus. Lastly, OEM doesn’t always correspond to best quality. The batteries are an example. Maserati batteries are known to occasionally have deep discharging issues, especially in cold weather. The OEM batteries are prone to dying when the car is parked outside in the winter. After my battery died a few times, I went aftermarket for the bast battery I could possibly find, and the battery I bought is actually better than OEM and about 30% less expensive than OEM for the dealership. And of course, replacing it myself saved on the labor charge. Most often than not, a dealer will not install an aftermarket item such as a battery, even if it is far superior when compared the OEM part. Since I installed the aftermarket battery, I have had zero discharge issues, whereas prior I had been through a few OEM batteries with severe discharging issues.

I paid 550 for front rotors and pads, replaced them myself. I owned Audi, Bmw's and the tools are similar. Just stop being lazy and do it yourself. I also replaced my spark plugs in under 30 mins. Next is serpentine and alternator belt. Just take your time and do not be affraid to do it yourself

Here’s a tip also, if you use your brakes a lot, when you come to a stop let the car roll slowly. If you hold on the brakes you’re keeping heat on one part of the rotor from the pads while the rest of the rotor cools down, it can exacerbate warping.

If you think owning a Maserati is expensive..... buy a ZLI. Brakes and rotors at 30k miles $ 2500.00- $ 3,500,00. Tires, on its fourth set @ 42k miles- 1,400.00 a set. I was I would have bought a Maserati instead.... I love the ZL1, at least the oil changes are only $ 110.00

Rons Rides highly encourage you to buy a couple tools and learn how to do some things! If you have a mentor it’s not so bad. I replaced the upper control arms on my Audi with OEM parts for $160 when it should have cost almost $800 in parts from a dealership let alone labor!

Is there some rule of law that says you cannot change your own oil and filter and repair your own brakes? Oil is the same price for all cars per quart. The filter is the only difference. Why are Brembo pads and rotors necessary? Is it the name you are paying for since most of these products now are made in Asia? Are there other names of parts that can be used?

The thing is, pads are changed regularly either because of stop-start traffic or performance/track driving. But discs? Below 60K milles or serious degradation causes by salt or water I don’t see the point.

Looking at getting a used Ghibli SQ4 AWD. I particularly like the 2018 due to the grill redesign. Is there a specific year for the age/deprecation equilibrium. They say usually it is around a five-year-old vehicle but I notice a big difference in price between a 2017 and 2018 as compared to 2018 and 2019.

tip: use engine braking to reduce pad and rotor wear. protip: use the back of another car to stop without using your brakes at all saving you the cost of pads and rotors* protip adds the cost of a new front end, radiator, and possible engine replacement. joking aside, actually id expected it to be more expensive with the cost of the rotors, but definitely not like getting a $600 honda civic brake pad change.

You can outsource those parts and get them much cheaper!! You have to be crazy to buy parts from maserati dealer the mark up is so high.. so i suggest finding parts elsewhere and having a local mechanic install its not brain surgery!!

Yup you can always do that, when I wasn't with the dealership I bought tires and got them installed cheaper from someone else the first time around. Being at the dealer though I got stuff at cost so it made more sense to get from them while working here.

Rons Rides way higher They charge me $1.500 here in jersey But of course that i didn’t go there, because I tough that was too much money So I went to the dealership and bought the parts and took to my mechanic I ended up paying $1.200 for parts and labor Like you said, it’s a brembo brakes, every mechanic knows how to work on this breaks I did my breaks around 10k miles ago and still amazing No issues or funny noises at all...

The vent fin gap on the rotors is freaky, I have never heard of one separating, but dang, looks delicate. Someone needs to step up and make a massive as possible battery for them beasts, some cranky rich peep always griping about it sitting for a month and being at -11 volts from whatever draw, prolly alarm system.
