Leaf hang glider is actually pretty understandable. It's been shown hamon flows through organic matter especially easily. He'd just have to magnetize all the leaves together and strengthen them. Compared to everything else Harmon can do, the leaf glider is one of the easier ones to believe. I think you reaaaally missed the point regarding Part 5 and its finale. The finale does not feel like it's about Girono Giovanna, youre 100% right about that but it's not SUPPOSED to be. Part 5 is a series about FATE and imo the ending played wonderfully into it. As a matter of fact i think its my second favorite ending in all of JoJo, and the way Toriyama showed us the initial trigger of this story about fate only after they defeated Diavolo was imo not only creative but beautifully done and a melancholic callback to all those dramatic events that happened throughout the series. And seeing it through this lense also makes Narancias and Abbachios unpredictable deaths so much more... i don't know, meaningful? Really loved your video but regarding Part 5, i don't know... maybe it's worth rereading for you cause you kinda missed the (totally not) mark.

Yeah, the epilogue arc recontextualises the whole part, and cements the deaths within the gang as having a far grander sense of causality, and therefore, sacrifice. To explain it simply, Bruno’s ‘rescue’ from Rolling Stones came with a proportional cost, just like how Diavolo paid dearly for his efforts to have governance over his own fate. What set the Bucciarati gang apart of course is the nobility of their mission (i.e getting drugs off the streets of Italy), which they could not have achieved without Bruno having the time he needed to coordinate his team to execute it. So with this postponement of Bruno’s death being just and unselfish…it seemingly persuaded fate to make a kind of deal (not to necessarily argue that fate in JoJo has a sapient mind or even any level of intelligence at all to make a deal with, only that it can successfully influenced, albeit not controlled completely). I could call it a deal because it would make the gang’s objectives possible, unlike Diavolo’s pipe dream of becoming something like a god. But even by challenging fate in good faith, it will always come at a price. The noble and just path is most often the more difficult and challenging one. The effect was, remaining close to Bruno upon assisting him to escape death, his friends had imperiled themselves, via this ‘deal’ with fate. The boat scene midway through the story thus jumps from being a powerful symbolic moment, to perhaps in fact being the most pivotal event of the part. The deaths that eventually followed were shocking and unexpected in the moment, but these were sacrifices that had already been pledged by stepping into that boat. Sorry for the rambling; part 5 is my favourite of the original timeline, and the ending really makes it hold up well even next to the more complex metaphysics of the later parts
@eljidreigon8316Күн бұрын
Just finished watching and yeah, with all due respect he needs to re-evaluate Part 5, cause i think he missed some key elements (not saying that he needs to like it after the fact, but it helps, and it helped me understand the ending and appreciate it) I have not seen Part 5 on while but, the theme as far as i remember is established on Bruno's backstory with the ''wheel of fate'' scene, he is the one that leads the gang and ends up finding every member after their most unfortunate moments or, for example, with Mista, he was miraculously alive due to having a bigger purpose, he was ''fated'' to continue, live and eventually go trough his journey alongside the gang, as seen in the last arc. He also mentions that King Crimson and Goden Experience are not parallels of each other, but they do end up being that, with GER and KC representing both sides of the phrase of ''actions have consequences'', GER is Diavolo´s biggest fear, someone that denies him of what he perceives is his fate. With KC being a very fitting stand, representing Diavolo's cowardice and his intent to gain power without being seen. I also didn´t see him mention the cool callback/parallel seen in the Diavolo´s reveal with Polnareff on top of the stairs similarly as when he faces Dio, or likewise, Bruno being the namesake of the part, etc.
@sRtAoIrNmКүн бұрын
Giorno became the boss. That was the goal. All of the things he wanted to accomplish hinged on becoming the leader of the gang and he did that. This is not like ash making it to the champion fight then cutting that, it’s like ash getting to the champion fight, winning the champion fight and then the show cutting back to him having a conversation with Oak about becoming champion then ending the show there. What, did you want the last three episodes to be Giorno as the boss eliminating the drug trade? That would be such a waste of time when we already know he is going to do that and it won’t be an interesting story to watch. He has already gone through the struggles of his journey, we know he is going to eliminate the drug trade because we know that’s what he as a character wants to do, showing it is pointless.

FINALLY THE SECOND PART 3 REVIEW IS VIEWABLE AGAIN
@CJKris12 сағат бұрын
As someone who disliked the ending of part 5, after finishing the anime. A recurring theme of part 5 is fate, and how it is unavoidable. This shows in Diavolo and his stand King Crimson, since Diavolo is afraid of the future, and uses King Crimson to(As he says it) "Erase his destiny". Meanwhile Bucciarati, who is slowly dying in the second half, accepts his destiny and does everything he can to make sure his gang will be good without him. And Giorno with Requiem, which if i remember correctly, "is a piece of music, that serves to make souls move on"(Take this with a grain of salt). And the arc of Rolling Stones serves to add to this, since it implies that Mista's actions to avoid Bucciarati's fate, cause to set in stone Leon's, Narancia's and Bucciarati's deaths. Meaning no matter what could've happened in the story, they would have died. But instead of just dying, they help the gang during their limited time, even if they didn't know about their fate. And Diavolo's eternals death's are rather ironic since the guy who feared fated, and the lack of control he had on it. Is now in a position where he'll never reach his death, in other words his fate. Reviving just moments before meeting his fate. Sorry for the long tangent, as someone who was critical of this ending myself. I wanted to add what made me, at least slighty like it. Loved this review, Mark!!

So, the thing about the Jojo Anime is that Part 6-Stone Ocean's anime really does clear a lot of things that may have been confusing for readers the first time around up a lot. Lot more explaining how certain things work, characters like Ermes gets more screen time and we get to see her through her backstory than Foo Fighters just telling us. A lot of positive changes.
@francescominoguarino827Күн бұрын
I actually disagree with this. I personally understood all the most important aspects while reading Stone Ocean, and while the anime does add some nice scenes, it also removes some fundemental ones, like Jolyne stealing a car, or a lot of prison brutality, not to mention the entre Bohemian Rhapsody arc. I onestly found it a much better experience, and I don't see what the anime added that would make it "less confusing", if anything I'd say the ability to read at your own pace would improve your ability to understand certain concept.

He didn't even mention Jotaro having the same type of stand as Dio.
@ApplesGhostКүн бұрын
So I think you might've somewhat missed some of the thematic point of part 5, and one of Giorno's secondary motivations, which was to find out more about his father, Dio. Rather than directly finding out about Dio, however, the entire part is built around the concept of inherited will, with Giorno's personality and will being very similar to Dio, with Jonathan's personality and will merely influencing him in subtle ways. Dio, and Giorno, are both usurpers. The reason Mista went so far with rolling stones is out of loyalty to Bruno. The reason so many of the characters were willing to fight and die was for Bruno. Part 5 is meant to somewhat parallel Part 1, with the clear delineation thematically being that rather than Jonathan/Bruno fighting against Dio/Giorno, they joined them, because they felt that they were right. Even Gold Experience was meant to represent this. The ability to put life into objects meant he was able to revive Bruno, as a zombie. Hamon is the power of life, and Dio's abilities let him raise zombies to fight for him. The evolution into Gold Experience Requiem, while seemingly an asspull, parallels something deeper about Dio and Jonathan's story, which is that Dio was trying to take hold of fate, like taking back the reigns of main character status, from Jonathan, who he was trying to usurp more generally. In this case, Diavolo's stand had mastered fate. It was the ability to avoid inevitable outcomes by skipping past them. Giorno's ability, narratively, was the ability to reinforce fate by undoing Diavolo's ability to avoid inevitable fate, and in fact cancel all opposition to him more generally, as a ruler of the world. Giorno had accomplished Dio's will by the end of the story, by usurping his best friend, and then usurping the current ruler of the (criminal under)world. As for Giorno's personality, it's something that people often miss: Giorno is extremely subtle, and a natural-born leader. He brings out the best in others. He gives them direction. Abbacchio on the boat would've lost without Giorno. Everyone, or at least those present, would've died to Fugo's stand without Giorno. Mista would've died without Giorno, Narancia would've died without Giorno, and Bruno wouldn't have been in the second half of the story without Giorno. And Giorno wouldn't have been able to make it without them. There's a reason people say Bruno was the main jojo of part 5, and that's because narratively, he was the ace in the hole, like Jotaro and Josuke, and Giorno was a mentor figure, like Joseph post part 2, because his battle IQ was just extraordinarily high. As for the part about Koichi, it did come back, in the form of Polnareff. Koichi's point was to say "Jotaro is looking for you because you're a person of interest." But who's to say he's the only one who was looking for him, for only that reason? It called back all the way to the end of part 3 and early part 4, when Jotaro was looking for the stand arrows. Jotaro went east while Polnareff went west. Polnareff learned about certain stand arrows and Jotaro learned about other stand arrows. Polnareff just happened to be in way over his head, because while Jotaro had to deal with Yoshikage Kira, with Josuke's help, Polnareff was alone until he joined up with Giorno. In this way it's meant to parallel between the two, that they had to rely on a new Jojo to help them overcome these new threats. A lot of the complaints you have about Part 5 are because you're expecting the story to be self-contained in its themes and therefore misunderstood the story it was trying to tell. Part 5 was telling the story of Jojo, not just the story of Giorno Giovanna. Giorno's motivations were somewhat secondary to who he was and represented. He was far more than some noble soul that wanted to save the children of his hometown. He was the son of Dio and Jonathan, and in this universe, that means a lot.

Jojo is one of the most fun, bombastic, and unique animes/mangas I’ve ever experienced. Each parts offers something new and has some of the coolest characters and power systems. If you ask me, it’s a must for any anime or manga fan
@youraveragechroma2139Күн бұрын
40:59 Usually stuff like this is down to the effect that Fate plays in an almost character-like way. Fate is the primary element in JoJo’s and most villains lose to a cathartic ironic twist of fate (even Strohiem). The red stone never being considered to be destroyed by the heroes to stop Kars and Kars never considering destroying it after his single purpose is achieved is that JoJo signature “plot slight-of-hand”. Kars wanted to evolve and needed the red stone. The red stone then becomes the reason he’s shot into space. Part 2’s ending is what really establishes that fate takes first order over characters’ consideration.

I will say for Stardust Crusaders it isn't really random. Dio sent out his minions, we see this with the Speedwagon organization as they reveal the Stands that used the egyptian god monikers. Dio sent Kakyoin and Polnareff the same way. It isn't random as it is so much "Hey we know where they are heading, intercept them and cause as much chaos as you can. They also sent two after them a few times with Centerfold and Hol Horse, the Oingo Boingo brothers, and Hol Horse and Mondatta/Boingo. Then Vanilla Ice and The Younger Darby Brother ambushed them at Dio's manor/palace in Egypt before Dio single handedly took out Kakyoin and Joseph. Vanilla Ice also took out Iggy and Abdul, and I mention that to emphasize that Dio like any classic villain more than likely sent his weakest to strongest stand users.

Since I wasn't in a position to read all of the manga when I started the anime, I always viewed JoJo through the lens of Araki's evolution as a writer. It's both easy and fascinating to see JJBA as Araki growing as an artist with each chapter
@jorgeavilesfКүн бұрын
While I do get your point about part 5s ending, I think that while a show don't tell approach to how Giorno became boss (which was always what both his and Bruno's goal was to begin with... becoming boss to change the rules, become GANGSTARS) would have been great. I think that the stone episodes at the end are pointing towards what Araki wanted to say about fate in that arc (and that's specially relevan when you consider the ending of part 6). What I do agree the most is that Fugo was written out with no purpose. I've heard speculations that he was written out because his stand was very OP, but I have no evidence to support that it was actually because of that.
@worsethanyouthink10 сағат бұрын
Okay I don’t have the time to explain the primary themes of part 5. Once you get it it does make jotaro and Fugo’s participation make sense thematically, as well as their lack of involvement later. the lyrics of the fighting gold OP summarizes the theme pretty well. Also don’t worry we know Bruno is the main character of part 5, not Giorno.

Dude, who in their right mind would recommend the anime over the manga for this? That's not to say the anime is bad, but the way they chose to adapt it really doesn't add much. It's just a change in medium and it doesn't even nearly utilise its new medium to its fullest. Add to that Araki being one of the best artists to ever draw manga of all time and you really have no leg to stand on _demanding_ that someone watch the anime instead of reading the manga.

Arakis "Manga in Theory and Practice" has taught me so much about pacing in terms of writing a story, and some very harsh lessons in regards to character design, and a characters relation to the story being told.

I'd also like to add Mark, Jotaro is not as powerful as he was in Part 3. "Jotaro feels as powerful as he ever has." this is not true. He even tells us that his time stop ability is now only down to 1 second when previously he could manage 3-4 seconds at the end of Part 3. I know you do these reviews and criticisms as you read them but you are missing key details. Jotaro is weakened because he hasn't had to use Star Platinum in over ten years. His fight with Josuke was the first time he had to use Time Stop and he barely got it off in time before Josuke rearranged his face. During his team up fight with Josuke against the rats and their stand(s) we also see he needs Josuke to help him. He isn't powerful enough to deal with even these Rats as he gets hit multiple times during this battle. Even against Kira's Sheer Heart Attack he barely manages to even go for a draw, granted he had to save Koichi from leaving himself wide open. So we the audience are aware Jotaro is not up to his full strength, but also Sheer Heart Attack seems immune to Jotaro's barrage as all he can manage are a few cracks in the jaw of the skull face. Old Jotaro was able to break things that were as strong as diamonds, he was able to keep up with light speed attacks from Silver Chariot. He is not as strong as he used to be in this moment.

Something I think people miss (or maybe I'm looking too far into it) is the Tarkus and Bruford fight are meant to symbolize the 2 sides of Dio in Jonathan's mind. Jonathan is a goody two-shoes who wants more than anything to see the good in Dio much like his father seemingly did. He especially just wants him to be the brother he never had. So he starts fighting Bruford who is a vampire like Dio, and through his skills is able to beat him to some extent. But then, much like with Dio, the vampiric powers are too much to overcome. However, Jonathan being so noble, trusts Bruford not to kill him and appeals to his humanity and this works! Bruford is defeated, but in the end Jojo gives him his humanity back. Jojo then is saddened that in redeeming him from being a monster, he still had to die. Basically, this is showing how Jojo THINKS the fight with Dio will go. Because Jojo believes in nobility (being a gentlemen) SO much, that he thinks his journey to Dio is going to end with him appealing to Dio's humanity by being just such a good guy and he dies in Jojo's arms having repented for his acts and being forgiven by Jojo. But then Tarkus comes in, and Jojo gets ready to fight, but Tarkus isn't focused on him, instead trampling over the remains of Bruford. Despite being allies till death, he is tearing down Bruford's armor and making fun of him. THIS is reality barging in, showing Jojo how the fight with Dio is REALLY going to go. Tarkus, much like Dio, revels in his evilness and selfish desires. He tramples on Bruford because he is destroying the fake idea of Dio in Jojo's head. Their fight isn't going to go like Jojo thinks, because him being so good is just a weakpoint for Dio to exploit. Jojo needs to get mean, and actually fight to the death if he wants to save anyone. This is also why Zepelli has to die, to really set in to Jojo that holding back at all will get him or others killed. This is also why that other guy has to die in the beginning of the Dio fight, to show to Jojo that Dio IS like Tarkus and will kill, he even gets one last insult in to really dress down Dio as a pretentious monster rather than any kind of noble person like Jojo hopes. Its only because of this that Jojo actually commits to killing Dio first before mourning him. And he mourns because he realized that he never had that chance to try to save Dio, he was always a monster and never could have been redeemed. Even in the ending with Dio coming back and killing Jojo, Jojo gets the last laugh, as he is the one that dies with Dio in his arms, hugging the brother he could never have. The opposite of how it was supposed to go in his head (the opposite of the Bruford fight no less). But in the end it didn't matter, because Jojo couldn't help himself, he realized that no matter how evil Dio was, he still loved him as a brother. And its through his Death having never shown hate towards Dio, that Dio truly starts to understand him, even feeling sad for losing Jojo, as he was the last of Dio's humanity. This moment is the reason that Dio goes on his arc of self discovery during Stardust Crusaders. In Part 1 he is just a new vampire reveling in his powers and debauchery, but after that moment he then tries to learn and grow, he studies much like Jojo did. He wants to become a better man, but just in the twisted way he sees that being as. Maybe I'm looking too far into it, but I think the parallels with how he holds onto both Bruford and Dio kinda convey a connection there. I think the tragedy is that Jojo being just so perfect was his greatest weakness and that's what gets him killed, but him being so good isn't a bad thing, its just that Dio is the type to really exploit that to gain power over him. And is it any wonder that the Jojo (Jotaro) that does finally kill Dio is the one that has the same sense of Justice, but isn't so sentimental, willing to get mean when it matters most. I think Jonathan is a tragic character, because he's who we should all strive to be, but he's in a world where being that will just get you killed. He was the gentlest man there was, but he needed to be strong enough to be gentle. Also The leaf hangglider thing actually makes sense once you understand more of how Hamon works. In Battle Tendency we see it can hold the water in a cup even when upside down. This is still a bit confusing to explain, but the leafs are full of water and conductive, so it makes sense that they would be able to hold together like that. Its silly and comes out of nowhere because the series didn't set it up well, but it does hold up to scrutiny from future info. Basically, Hamon is electrical in nature, but also contains sunlight energy (the word escapes me, but its the stuff plants need to grow). Its been so long since I've done a deep dive into Hamon so I forget all the nuances and explanations of its powers, but if you study it a bit then it definitely makes some sense (though some stuff in the series is still a stretch).

Around the 2 hour and 50 min mark, Mark talks about the time thing and says that Giorno was a better comparison to Prosciutto bc he believes they are the opposites, but that's not the case otherwise Giorno would've stomped him. His power set takes away the moisture from living things hence why they all died slowly withering away rather than just aging and dying instantly, hence the stand name being the grateful dead. This is why the ice cubes where needed to help combat the stand and we even see Prosciutto needing the moisture of the ice bc he himself was not ammune to the stands effect. Honest mistake but I get what he was trying to go for here.
@bloodtingeprotoКүн бұрын
Not trying to start a fight, but where did you read that about Grateful Dead using moisture? I've read the newer scanlations and watched the anime, and neither of them mention the aging power utilizing moisture (or lack thereof). It's explained in both the manga and anime that the aging doesn't affect Trish because (according to the manga, no idea if it's actually true), women have a cooler body temperature than men do, and Mista and Bucciarati aren't affected at first because they were drinking cold drinks - that is what prompts the team to use ice cubes to lower their body temperature to prevent themselves from being targeted by the aging effect; Pesci does the same thing with the ice cubes. At one point, Mista is trying to get to the main cabin to turn on the air conditioning to prevent the aging effect throughout the train. Prosciutto is normally immune to the aging effect, but selectively targets himself to trick Mista, but doesn't actually need to lower his body temperature to avoid the aging effect.

Jojo was one of the biggest surprises of my life. My ideals and personality before should have kept me away from it, but a curiosity arose upon seeing the Stone Ocean Trailer (frankly I saw Ermes and Jolyne and was sold; similarly I started One Piece because I saw Nami, I am a simple dude). I regret nothing, Jojo opened me up to music, and even helped my own writing as well. There isn’t anything like it out there, each part is amazing and somehow distinct while also being connected. It’s Bizarre, it delivers what is to be expected, and while I ask for nothing more, it delivers more each time. That first read through from 1-8 was without question the most I’ve read up to that point, and some of the best manga I’ve ever read. until I found Baki! 🤣 If only that anime could capture the beauty of it wholly, they only managed so in part 5. Here’s hoping Part 7 gets godly treatment!

Berserk, Bleach and JoJos are three IPs that have to be consumed in manga form imo. I truly hope that one day on your own you can find something to latch onto about it, there truly isn't anything like it at least that I'm aware of, in my opinion it doesn't fall into the same pitfalls that other stories can and often times do, it's a truly bizarre adventure pun intended, maybe you can find a compromise somewhere? About your criticism of part 5's ending feeling like a different story, you are correct and I think I can shed some light on this issue. From what I've gathered, Araki said he was in a dark place mentally when writing part 5 and intended to reflect that in his writing. For some examples (skip if too long). Fuugo was supposed to replace Ciocolata, the green haired psycho that uses the mold stand, as the antagonist in Rome. Exploring themes of betrayal and having a darker turn in that a friend we thought we knew is an irredeemable villain. Same for Polnareff when you think about it, he needed Jotaro's help but couldn't find him when he needed him the most. Giorno was supposed to reflect those themes. As a spawn of Dio in Jonathan's body, he inherited both of their wills, with a noble goal stemming from Jonathan's side and his ruthlessness stemming from Dio's side. As the story progresses, we see him learn to embrace his father's evil. The Ciocolatta fight was when we saw Dio really coming out except, again, that was supposed to be against Fuugo. I want you to picture everything Ciocolatta did and how Giorno killed him but replace all of that with Fuugo, a main cast member turned traitor. Halfway through, Araki felt better and he realized how dark of a story he was about to write. Worse even, he didn't see the need for it beside his state of mind warping his view of the world and it bleeding into the story. So he retconned it halfway through and decided to explore more melancholic but hopeful themes, specifically Fate. The exact moment of that change is a bit before the boat scene where they separate from Fuugo, as Araki had no purpose from him besides being the traitor. The scene where Fuugo stays behind as "has nothing to do with this" symbolically represents Araki leaving behind the bleaker parts of the story and departing onto a new, retconned but hopeful, horizon. The caviot being having to throw everything that was foreshadowed and making stuff up on the fly. Some parts of the second half were salvaged ideas from the original story, but others were new and made upon the fly. He added that ending with rolling stones as a way to tie in the story. Admitting himself that the second part made no sense, he added that epilogue/flashback as his way of admitting he didn't plan for it to go this way.
