We were very unfit and overweight, also heavy smokers when I was fifty. We bought some cheap bikes, at first we were struggling to get round the local park but gradually built up to days, weekends and every holiday touring. When we retired, I was approaching sixty we took our bikes to Europe every year and toured a different country each trip staying in cheap self catering accommodation. Eventually we sold up and moved to Europe, now we live in Switzerland and returned home yesterday after two weeks skiing. I am now 78 and we ski, hike or cycle in the mountains just about every day. We have an annual medical checkup and that is about the only time we see our doctor, we don't have any aches and pains. Apart from exercise we only buy single ingredient foods and cook a healthy meal every night. I don't know how long it will last but we have had an incredible twenty years of retirement so far with lots of adventures, excitement and new experiences. If we hadn't bought those cheap bikes I'm pretty sure I would have been long dead by now we would have missed an awful lot.

My parents retired at 65 and I got to watch them travel and enjoy freedom to go and experience more things. Also got to watch them slow down at 75 and things really changed at 80. Teach your kids to love life and retire young as soon as you can and enjoy life. You likely need less money than you think. My parents had very little but travelled low key and travelled lots. Health is everything

We are 76 and 83 and have been retired for 10 years. We have previously traveled a lot throughtout our life and that was enough. We are whole food plant based with no oil or animal products for 17 years and it has paid off well for us. So happy I decided when my mother died of Alzheimers it was time to figure out how to keep those arteries open. If we both die tomorrow we have been among the fortunate ones! We are never bored and every day just flies by. I love to cook and my husband loves to bird watch and loves nature. Those are our main hobbies along with reading and watching a movie every night. Life is definitely good! You never know what is around the next corner so appreciate each and every day!

I've heard this many times, especially when my husband decided to retire. Retirement doesn' t kill you, poor health does. There are also some people whose entire life is wrapped up in their job. It's their job, entertainment and social life. I look at retirement as a commencement. One part of your life is finished and then you move onto a brave new world full of opportunities.

I retired about 8 months ago at 64. I joined a gym about 3 months ago and go 5 days a week. I also lift weights 3 times a week. I walk between 55-60 km a week (both at the gym and walking the dog). Plus I do stretching, meditation, and spent time in the sauna. My resting heart rate has dropped to 48 bpm. I have stopped drinking and feel fantastic. I am in the best shape of my adult life. My job in retirement is to stay healthy and happy and so far two thumbs up 👍.

I think too many people have no life outside their jobs and their families. In retirement, they are facing 12 to 16 hours a day no longer filled by work or raising children. They can’t imagine how they would fill their time.

When I was in my 50s I saw the writing on the wall, so 1st I invested to secure my family’s future, worked extra to earn my ticket to do the things I thought important to me that I wouldn’t be able to do after retirement, so in my sixties I semi retired, bought a sailboat and headed south, my family would meet me at various ports in Mexico, Guatamala, Costa Rica, etc and we’d sail in tranquil seas. I would not subject them to the real hardships of sailing in heavy weather. I also did scuba diving, snow skiing, hunting with heavy backpacks. All the things that I knew that wouldn’t be possible after retirement age. So I’m not surprised to find myself at age 85 unable to sail my boat single handed, nor ski, nor hunt, nor walk extended distances, with new pains cropping up all too often. I’m glad I made those happy memories while I could.

Well there is no good scientific data that says not working means you die sooner. The reason people die after they retire, is because they are 65 years old. You are already close to the best before date. Why do you think travel insurance companies stop writing insurance at 69? Imagine, work to 65 and have 4 years to travel with insurance. People should aim to retire a the latest, 55.

Well said! I joined the local Aquatic Center equipped with a Gym about 13 years ago. I was in very poor health, so I started off slow, just a few days a week while I was working to now 6 days a week. I stopped eating all that ultra processed food, lost a bunch of weight, and now at 71, 5 years retired, I am in pretty good shape. Life is so much better now that I am not carrying all that extra weight around. The membership does cost a bit but since I go 6 days a week, the cost is very reasonable, and a great place to make friends. Recommended!

Wise wise words. My wife and I hope to retire around the age of 55, give or take. We've got about a decade to go. The last decade with young kids, lack of sleep, caring for aging parents, lack of exercise and the poor diet that seems to naturally come with stress - hasn't been the healthiest. We're pivoting away from poor decisions and investing in our health now with the intent to 'hit the ground running' and be the healthiest we can be whenever we pull the trigger on retirement. Kudos to your candor.

You are doing a great service to people, inspiring them to get on with life. Good advice all around, including the health advice. I retired as soon as I turned 60, at the earliest opportunity financially available to me. I met people who had 42 years at one job and could have retired with an indexed pension at 84% of their work income! They were literally paying to go to work, when you take employment expenses into account. I also know at least 3 people who died a couple of years after retiring, after hanging on to work far too long, one actually passed three months before retiring. Fear of passing away is a reason TO retire, not a reason not to retire!

I think one of the key things to be aware of is changes at your workplace which take the enjoyment out of work. I had a job in a school I loved but the principal’s outlook changed as you strived to climb the ladder. I couldn’t stand and fortunately I have a wonderful husband who said- just retire, so I did. Best decision I made and nine years on, I’m blessed to be living the best job I’ve ever had.

You are so right. My husband and I have been retired for 6 years now. This is the best time of our lives! We've made lots of great friends with whom we enjoy doing things. It's a whole new world. I'm 69 now and am in pretty good shape. But the food issue is very real. Both of us enjoy sweets and eating out. It takes will power. We visit our doctors regularly. We both have had health issues that took time to heal. We persevere and get going again. Truly a great time. 🎉

I have just retired early at 51. I have sat and watched over the years, many colleagues far older than me, with tons of economic resources - keep working. They continue to work because they have powerful positions which define them as people... they aren't sure what they will do when they stop working, they will have no identity. Others have told me that have no idea WHAT they will do when they don't work. It really, really shocks me that people would want to spend as much time as they can in their life, working. The whole point of work is to gain resources to NOT work at some point. People get attached to their jobs like they do bad relationships. It's toxic and people are just silly. If you quit your job and walk away - it is not easy, but you can find a way and you can pick some hobbies, We started a KZbin channel as our hobby to document our lives. It gives us stuff to do, takes time and also requires some practice, training and ongoing learning. Best thing we have EVER done. Anyone going to work with enough economic resource to walk away, needs their brain tested.

My 2 cents: I was never a workaholic. My wife always has been. The company I worked for closed shop in 2002. I had started an e-commerce site in 2000 so when they closed up my wife said jus focus on your small business. I did pretty good until about 2012 and I packed it in. The expense wasn't worth it. I kept myself busy but at 67, have been pretty much retired for 10 years. I have hobbies and keep myself busy. My wife retired at 65 from an insanely pressure cooker job that included long stretches of time in the UK and Germany. We did some great travel (still do) but after 18 months she was going stir crazy so she went back to work full time albeit in a zero pressure job she loves. My advice to anyone who cares is just find something you enjoy doing post retirement and yes, maintain your health! Thanks again Tina and Norm

I've been retired for 4 years, my husband 3. The year he retired he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Something like that makes you appreciate the retirement years. We have a big trip planned to Korea in May to visit my son. What I have found is we are eating better, making most of our own meals, we enjoy grocery shopping together and cooking. I have joined a weekly bowling league which is so much fun and my husband has his 3 times a week exercise for people with Parkinsons. We are busy but we also like days where we do nothing other than going for a walk around the neighbourhood or lunch at Ikea. You also have to like each other, it makes a big difference. Don't wait for retirement, my mom lived a short time when my dad retired and he lived another 17 years, very unhappy. Enjoy this stage of our life. We deserve it.

Hey 👋 Norm & Tina! Welcome Home 🎉🙏👏 This week I had to get my car inspected as required by the State of Delaware. I have an older car, due for retirement sooner than later. We want to go on a road trip / “vacation.” After checking out all the lights, wipers & horn, I got out of the car and the inspector hooked the car up to a computer to diagnose any engine or other issues. Everything checked out 💯 a okay ✅. That’s a relief. You’re absolutely correct! As we grow older, that baseline bloodwork and confirmation we have many miles ahead is comforting. The biggest decision is deciding where to go! And how much to spend, eat, and drink. 🍺 🍹 🥤 🌭 🍟 Oops!! Within reason. Have a great weekend! ❤

I think there is a correlation between people who retire, do nothing or do little, and die early. It is important to maintain health, exercise, and watch what you eat, but it's equally important to maintain schedules, learn new hobbies, learn new things, expand your interests, and socialize with friends old and new. For example, I think you two are doing it right. Having a KZbin channel not only gives you a bit of income but also forces you to use your mental faculties in producing and editing videos. You interact with people from around the world. The traveling keeps you active, forces you to think about new things, and helps you expand your horizons. Retiring and then staying in the same area you lived in, the same house, and doing the same things (minus the job) can cause you to go into autopilot. I watched my father decline rapidly because of that type of lifestyle. He didn't have the challenges of work and had little challenges in his home life. He occasionally tried new things, but it was all too easy to revert to his lounge chair and routine. The hours he would normally be at work were just filled with more TV and an extra trip to the store, or on a good day, the lake to fish. None of that challenged him. He stopped learning and growing and it took a massive toll.

Truth- #1 women never retire. Still cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, organizing social calendar. #2 if your spouse doesn't want to travel, go ahead yourself. I don't see why one should stay home because the other one wants to keep working. However, traveling as a single is much more expensive. I don't think couples realize at all what it's like to live as a single. I am very careful talking to married men because their wives get jealous very easily. Subtly not being welcomed to sit at a table because you're on your own. Paying single supplement up to 50% or double fare for cruises or all-inclusive resorts. Feeling more vulnerable because if something happens to you, who's gonna look after you, take you to the hospital, etc. It ain't easy.

From our perspective, health "insurance" is one of these North American driven fear models. We have met so many older expats who have NO insurance, because they can't even get it. Do they worry? No. Many countries where expats go have healthcare that is actually affordable just to pay out of pocket for. If you get a terminal condition, well so be it. You have bigger problems at that point in life other than insurance. Just our .02c Travel medical insurance stops being underwritten for the most part at 69. And regular medical insurance is expensive.. a person can pay easily $350 USD or more a month. AND, try getting paid out if something happens. They will all find tooth comb your medical history if your claim is large, looking for a way to avoid paying based on some preexisting clause or a failure to disclose that was not even on purpose. Eating well as soon as one can, even way before retirement is a great gift one can give one's health. It's hard to ditch bad eating habits. We have been on the healthy eating journey for a bit now, in preparation for the retirement phase. We understand without our health, there won't be much enjoyment in the retiring days. Good video topic. Cheers!

For many, their identity and social circle are tied to their work. It's a shame. Broad horizons throughout life serve one well. I think women tend to have multiple social outlets and that makes retirement easier. Additionally, there are not an insignificant number of Boomers and Gen Xers who don't have grandchildren to focus on. Having something to retire to is so important. Your advice on fitness is spot on! I find a diet and fitness tracker so useful. The one I use is free and is called MyNetDiary. Really keeps me on track! I appreciate you both so much. You're absolutely lovely!

Why do you feel the enemas need to feel productive when you retire? I was very productive working for 45 years in the nursing field, and now am enjoying this down time and restful days.I personally do not feel that I must be productive now at this point of my life. I retired at 58. Pension is okay and lots saved along with my home all paid off. No money owed. I’m healthy right now and very busy since retirement with so many more goals to reach. I only drink coffee, about 2 per day, decaf tea and water. No alcohol or cigarettes. No unnatural sugar either. And I work out everyday with either bootcamp which is a HIIT workout or indoor rock climbing and walking. I’m 62 now and enjoying good health while doing the activities I want to do 😊. My husband is age 60 and not yet retired but I’m not worried about doing things on my own until he can retire at about 62.

As always, great advice, Norm and Tina. We retired in June 2022 and April 2023. We cleaned out, prepped and are selling our house as our first priority like you guys. We think retiring at 57 has been a really great decision. I think if we had stayed at work all the stress and tasks at home piling up would have shortened not lengthened our lives. We’ll never know but we sure are happier. Thank you for creating this community.

Thank you for all your really worthwhile tips. I totally agree that retirement should be a new beginning. This could be a time when you can learn something new you never had time for and now you have. There are so many courses available to follow, history of art, for example. You may have had to go into a job instead of carrying on learning for longer. Now's the time. If you are curious and want to know more about whatever interests you, then you have a stimulus to live and find out. Reading and book clubs are excellent but not enough. You can add to that by following lectures, listening to talks and discussions and even learning a new practical skill, if you have spent your working life behind a desk. Mind over matter. Usually works. My mother learned two new lamguages after she retired and her mind was sharp as anything till the day she died at 86.

It's odd if you grew up without grandparents like me. Old age is a fuzzier concept. My mom made it to 77. The other day I calculated how many Sundays I had left if I live to 77. (I'm 62). THAT helps put things into perspective - including maintaining one's health. (I don't have that elephant in the room. I'm peacefully single. But I enjoy watching you two share your insights and experiences together!)

Totally shocks me how many people worry about money, fancy cars, fancy brands on their feet, arm and bum....yet are clinically obese. Who cares what brand your hand bag is if you look like a buffet monster. Why worry about paying your bills at 90, when you will surely explode soon. Stop eating so much food and so much junk. Go for a walk, less pills, less food....MORE LIFE. Knee injuries, blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol levels all get back in line when you get your weight in order and eat some quality food. Its what really matters. Cheers, enjoy your vids.

My sister and I worked last our job retirement ages. We both had medical emergencies that made us decide to retire at ages 66 and 69. The financial stability was worth it. But most importantly, we now have the time to follow up on our medical needs as quickly as we want. Dental and medical appointments are better because we don't have to squeeze them between work days. We are stress-free so our health has gotten better. This is a great time to manage your medical time.

The elephant is in the room, and let me say this, I am alone these days. I have retired and am in agreement with what you are saying. My son begged his father to retire. He was a very important part of the industry, but after 42 years, transplant is failing, dad let it go to someone. I am so thankful he did talk his father into a few years of retirement before he passed. I honestly have lost all of my friends over the years. It is a sadness to me, but I plan to enjoy the years I am blessed with. I can only say, please consider the days ahead as your time to enjoy.

I knew two blokes who died within weeks of retirement. One ate poorly and was overweight, the other kind of waited too long and seemed to have few outside interests to keep himself interested. Another fellow I knew well was very active, healthy and had a good sense of humor. He died 10 days after being diagnosed with liver cancer a couple of years after he retired at a normal age.

I have heard this statement when people say they are bored or restless. "Are you bored or boring"? I don't know, something to think about. We love our retirement but stay extremely active and social. It takes work that you have to put in to create your next life experiences.

Hi, I have followed your channel prior/post retirement and your video is very informative and right on point. Husband/I did all you suggested prior to retiring visit doctors, financial planner, and told our kids…and we did it retiring 1.5yrs ago and could not be happier. We immediately got into traveling starting in 2023, 2024 and even now pre-planning 2025. The secret to a memorable, happy, and adventurous retirement is having a good relationship with your spouse because no matter how healthy or money you may have if your marriage has not been good retirement is horrible, like I see with some family members. My husband of 18yrs is my best friend and are both enjoying living this chapter of our lives. God bless..

Great video. We are very focused on our diet and on function based exercise, namely doing weight training and cardio that emphasizes supporting muscles and balance so that we don't have to worry about stairs, using the bathroom, walking etc. We have noticed on our last few trips how much better we feel getting around. It really is use it or lose it. And we also have taken up studying spanish (since we like to go to Spanish speaking countries) and while it's a lot harder than it was learning languages when we were younger, it's really keeping our brains sharp. Also, despite our youtube name, cutting down on alcohol has been a priority. Everyday feels like a holiday but we don't have to toast it every day, lol

Hi Tina and Norm. The Medical is VERY important. And depending on WHERE you live, may dictate retirement rules of engagement, (Whether you have/or don't have a GP.) That is a serious issue in Canada as you know. And IF you go to a doctor and get the regimen testing, and IF the doctor finds something, and needs to investigate further, and one goes down that rabbit hole, that is a whole other kettle of fish, yes?? Diet/Health/Heredity/personal issues (I.E. Drinking/Drugging) are all going to be serious barriers to being healthy TO retire. I don't know what it is like in other countries, but it is more of the same Down South. So depending on where you live, the fear of not knowing, and finding a doc, you (Trust) and then the (What IF Rabbit hole appears), and we all know what the (Waiting Game) is here for sure. It may be like that for other places in the world, on this side of the ocean, that is. Europe, I am sure have different approaches to ageing folks and retirees. (WE) are both clean and sober, but now I will be 57 this July, and hubby will be 54 in June, we have problems we did not expect to have. Neither of us have a GP, and are on the Quebec 811 plan if we need one. (That's the find me a doctor right now) number. I have several doctors with specialty areas, for my needs, but I don't have a GP. How many growing older couples HAVE that nest egg they can draw on, We don't have a nest egg, that is dependent on the passing of my in laws. (I know that sounds rude) but when they pass, hubby will inherit and win-fall amount of money, we've already earmarked that lump sum, we've had the "Retirement" discussion here. Hubby works from home on his own schedule so unless he gets sick that he cannot perform, or if he should drop dead, he has made certain arrangements (life insurance) and all to make sure I can keep my home over my head. Folks might want to do the medical waltz, and then file life insurance for themselves and their significant others. To guarantee that if one or both fall into THAT black hole, there is a safety net for either party, Yes ?? Just a few thoughts from Montreal. Thank you for this video. Happy Happy !!

Your video is so true. My wife and I always said that one could not retire before the other. We both retired at the same time then we moved and got a new Dr. The first year she had us do more tests and blood work than we had done in the previous 30. It was the best medical prevention than we did and we would highly recommend it. Enjoy the wind down of your winter.

What i find interesting about this is that obviously we are all going to die. Work doesn’t extend anyone’s life, in fact there’s a great deal of evidence that it shortens lifespans due to ongoing stress. Work stress is often not felt during the working years but once it’s over, everyone i know who has retired tells me that they are suddenly aware of how much stress they were under. So i don’t really buy that people are choosing not to retire because they are afraid of dying. I believe that’s how they explain it to themselves, but i don’t think that’s the real reason. To me this is just an extension of an issue many people have around change. They don’t want to take a decision that signifies change, and then they justify that decision by claiming their life depends on it.

I agree men tend to probably not go to doctors as often as they should just to pick up on trending health issues.. "hey this changed since last time I saw you , you've got this thing here we might want to keep an eye on etc." I will say as a man if you have a choice between two seemingly equally qualified doctors pick the one with the thinner fingers.
