My husband just retired and we just bought a 2023 Rav 4 the reason we bought new is the Rav 4's that are 1 to 3 years old are the same or very close to the price of a new that's why Toyota is selling so many new vehicles over used ones.

We also just bought a 2023 vehicle for the same reason. It seems that used cars are really in demand right now. We sold one of our cars to Carmax and couldn't believe what we got for it. We're paying cash for the new one and expect to have it for a long time.

The Wealthy Barber is a great resource. I found that I was already doing half the things he suggests. Having learned to live on my salary, when my wife got a job we didn’t change our lifestyle, we banked her income. Thus we were able to save for a mortgage. I nicknamed our house “Macaroni Manor” because of all the kraft dinners we ate in order to afford it. Today I’m still debt free and intend to stay that way.

Hey 👋 Norm & Tina! Our biggest savings was moving OUT of New Jersey to a state less punishing. Once we paid our exit tax- yes, we had to pay to get out! Our property taxes reduced from $9,000 in NJ to a little over $900 per year here in DE. And our house here in DE is twice the size. Our HOA is $50 per year. How do you beat that? And DE has no sales tax! I enjoy your tips for savings! Thanks!

I have to say that the whole property tax thing and the way that taxes in general are done in the US is a real eye opener compared to here in Australia. Basically taxation is fairly similar across all of the states here although there are obviously some differences with state taxes such as motor registration etc. You certainly wouldn't move states here based on taxation. We have stamp duty that's levied on the purchase of the house, which can be pretty high, but no ongoing land tax after that for most houses. They're trying to bring it in in a few states under the guise of being "fairer" but it's nothing but a con job and a way to gather more tax every year imo. People will likely choose it to slightly reduce the cost of initial purchase but will then be stuck with a yearly tax that can be set at whatever the Govt. chooses or that will go up as housing prices go up. We don't pay any capital gains tax on profits if you sell your principal place of residence either, which is nice.

Good advice Tina and Norm. When I was working I bought a new car every 10 years and drove it until I felt it might no longer be reliable. Hi Tina & Norm, A great lesson. We learned also the hard way not carry credit card debts. The credit cards were maxed out to their credit limits; paying out high monthly payments did not leave enough money for saving. It took us a while to get rid of the credit card balances. The funny thing is that businesses here in the US don't like if you pay Cash. We just bought a car at the end of its lease. The car dealer gave us a strange look when we told him that we were going to pay cash
@ThisIsOurRetirement Жыл бұрын
In the U.S. it’s probably better to take the loan to get the cheaper price only after asking if the loan can be paid off without penalty at any time, if so take the loan, the dealer gets his commission, you get the lower price and you pay it off after delivery. Thanks for watching Suleman.
@sulemanpiracha8123 Жыл бұрын
@@ThisIsOurRetirement Oh, I thought the dealers calculate the 'residual value' of the car when you lease it and they give you a price based on the residual value at which you can buy it at the end of the lease. I did not know that you can get lower the purchase price this way- Thanks for the tip!!!

I agree about restaurants. We used to love going out to eat about once a week. Anymore, it seems the service is not very good, the food is disappointing and it is so expensive! We make delicious meals at home and joke about how much we would have to pay at a restaurant for meals that are not even as good. In the past year, I got food poisoning twice, so now I am even a bit afraid of other people’s food handling. If going out, I prefer ethnic foods that we do not know much about preparing, such as Indian and Thai food.

Dave Chilton's The Wealthy Barber was and remains the beginning of financial literacy for so many Canadians. Like you both, I started with it, and it led me to any number of other more sophisticated books on personal finance in Canada (Fred Vettese, Moshe Milevsky, Dan Bortolotti, Gail Vaz-Oxlade) and the U.S. (John Bogle, J.L. Collins, etc.) The Wealthy Barber was just what Canadians needed, given the exorbitant cost of investing here in the mutual funds era (some of the most expensive MERs in the world then) before index funds and ETFs arrived, and a certain degree of concentration in the banking and telecom sectors that kept related costs high. Thanks for these money-saving ideas.
@ThisIsOurRetirement Жыл бұрын
We totally agree David and it was a coincidence the book was just out as we arrived in Canada. We stopped investing in mutual funds because of those MER’s and they were loosing money in the late nineties. Thank goodness for discount brokerages and ETF’s and the invention of the TFSA! @@ThisIsOurRetirement Agreed -- discount brokerages are wonderful things. I manage retirement portfolios for a number of family members and friends using several of the brokerage platforms (bank-owned in this instance). A suggestion for a future video is this: self-directed investing and using such brokerages for managing one's money in retirement (and obviously, as with me, before). As far as low fees and ease of use, there's nothing better than managing a portfolio of ETFs and/or individual stocks on one of the brokerage platforms. You could explore the pro's and con's of them, the need for a minimal amount of understanding of investing, etc.

One point you could add is that by buying/driving older vehicles over six years old, thieves are less likely to steal them, and if your vehicle is dented or in an accident it is not as big a financial hassle to repair.

Otherwise, the food we buy to prepare at home is far better. I'd rather share a good steak (on sale) and homemade salad with my husband for 1/3 the price. Have a great week.

Great Video! Wasn’t it Tin? LOL Not eating out for a month? That’s a shocker but good for you! I have a favorite place for brunch to get a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich. But I got to save the beverage (pop). It’s getting to be as costly as the sandwich! Love you guys! Stay well!

Apple suggested I didn’t need a vpn on my apple but I have had one for years now, for my piece of mind. I like the vpn on my iphone,too. Have always paid self first, a lifetime habit. But, we did buy a new car because the interest was 3.1% and payments weren’t going to be a problem. The “new” car was a demo from dealer, thought price was good after checking internet price. I love the new car, traded in a 19 year car. Like not worrying for possible break down. Love watching your posts.

Thanks for sharing your experience, buying a new car is OK if you are going to keep it for sometime. Thanks for watching we do appreciate it.

As an IT professional, (Nord) VPN and private browsing are great tips. Travel and airline websites do tracks visitors (sneaky actually).

Thanks again for your ideas of things to think about. We did just buy a 8 year old truck, to pull a new to us RV trailer. We did take the loan on the RV. So we could pay cash for the truck.( 30k plus taxes and insurance= 40K) same for a used trailer 😢 Anyway the loan on the trailer 8.99%. That's $10.50 a day for interest. Just to let you know that interest rate and the taxes in B.ringC.ash provence.

Hi Tina & Norm! The Wealthy Barber book made a big difference in our lives too. My wife & I had just started our careers after university graduation and were given a copy by my father-in-law. I really think the lessons learned helped us get off on the right foot. Most impactful lesson was that we could be financially secure even on modest incomes. Sadly too many people think being financially secure is only something for others that are high earners. They use that chip on their shoulders as justification for not incorporating simple, proven effective, common sense financial practices in their lives. Now in our 60's we did some 'decluttering' and got rid of most of our books. One I kept was my signed copy of The Wealthy Barber. It serves to remind me of the important lessons it shared with me and that shaped the success we've had in our financial life.

That book was life changing and really it’s a simple formula, pay yourself first, I see high end coffee shop drive through lanes and think… never read the wealthy barber.

How can I save for more retirement, cut back on spending unnecessarily. What is your input?
@rossmacintosh5652 Жыл бұрын
@@Skiskiski The answer is even easier than you might anticipate. You could buy or borrow a copy of 'The Wealthy Barber' by David Chilton, and read it. The timeless financial advice in it is conveyed as a story that makes it an easy read. Chilton basically repeated most of the financial advice of the classic book 'The Richest Man in Babylon'. That book conveys the info in the form of an ancient parable. Chilton realised that the info might be better conveyed in a more contemporary form as it can be hard to relate to ancient Babylonians. In Chilton's book the mentor is a barber who conveys simple, proven, timeless knowledge to some customers. Using that knowledge in his own life, the barber had become wealthy on a modest income. Chilton chose a barber as the wealthy guy because most readers don't think of barbers as wealthy. A big point was if he can do it, anyone can! It's not about building the kind of wealth to buy Ferrari or a yacht but rather to be financially secure. It will take patience but anyone can do it.

Hi Norm and Tina. Great tips and financial advice that can help everyone. Wise U Tubers. We use included Apple relay that come with Apple products. We also use private browsing plus we regularly delete our browsing history. VPN’s can mess with Apple. Got rid of them. We were at four of our favourite restaurants this weekend in Niagara on The Lake and the food was fantastic! Enjoy your week! Cheers.
