I kind of feel like the final chord of Satisfied is a feeling of resignation rather than satisfaction, if that makes sense

It’s so interesting to see someone whose focus is more on the music than on the lyrics. Burr: “I’m keeping her bed warm while her husband is away” Nick: “The echoes!!!” 😂😂 But in truth, I love it. I tend to focus on lyrics, so I’m learning new things here! ❤❤

Ironically though (I've watched a lot of reaction vids, lol), when people focus more on the music, they seem to do a better job of actually figuring out what's happening and that it's a flashback, because the music cues it. I've seen so many people focusing on the lyrics and the actors completely miss this.

HAMILTON AND BURR are not simply friends or enemies. They have philosophical differences but they run in the same circles, they're fighting the same war, they're both ambitious. Burr is jealous, yes there's tension but at this point I think I'd call them frenemies. And the show points out milestones in the development of their relationship as it progresses.

Although they both talk a lot, taking a break after every song they bring up some really interesting concepts and ideas, and kind of makes you view the show in a whole new way because one of them focuses a lot on the musical aspect and brings up some things you might not have thought about while the other is kinda guiding him and also giving his thoughts and takes

I find it interesting to watch you, because what you interact with, first and foremost, is the music. My focus is always the words. So I learn a lot about different processes by watching you get lost in the music and then lose the plot points, whereas I'm following the words and catching the plot, but missing all sorts of cool things that are happening with the music. Lin Manual Miranda is brilliant with both words and music and he had the help of the also brilliant Alex Lacamoire, who was the orchestrator, arranger, and conductor for Hamilton. You are right that we now know what motivates Burr. He has a legacy to protect, he does not want to find himself on the losing side, and so he is going to lay in wait and watch until he can figure out the best way to capitalize on a situation. To some extent it is amazing that he even joined the Revolution, but I think he had figured out that if he had to return to England he would not have any prestige. Meanwhile, we have Hamilton who has nothing and so he is willing to risk everything to move up in the world. Plus he is in a hurry. It is easy to see how these different approaches to life could easily result in conflict.

Burr plays multiple parts. He’s present day in-story Burr and Future Omniscient Narrator Burr. When he’s reprising Alexander Hamilton, the first song, he’s speaking directly to the audience to give context and clearly has knowledge we don’t yet.

Ahh Satisfied. Aka how to win a Tony in 5 minutes. Not that the rest of her singing in the musical should be discounted, but Renée Elise Goldsberry kills it in this song. Not to mention the amazing things they do with the choreography during helpless and satisfied. During the ‘rewind’ portion they really do rewind almost step by step everything that happens. Like they perform it backwards or at least in backwards order. And then to repeat all the choreography, but from a different perspective is incredible.

At this point we should accept that he has chosen to focus more on the musicianship than the lyricism. It can be frustrating to see him miss so much story, but on other hand, he's pointing out so many details in the score that most other reactors completely ignore. I would advise watching his reactions as if they were music reactions and not movie reactions.

I think Burr’s reprisals of the opening song is like a combo of him narrating history/the story while also showing the developing jealousy. If you take that out of the actual interactions with Hamilton it makes more sense, because at this point they are friends/acquaintances.

So in this story Burr introduced Alex to his drinking buddies and Alex immediately caught their ear with his ambition and bold stand. Burr is apart of that drinking group (and probably the one footing the majority of the bar tab). They hang out because they are effectively college bros in a proto-fratenity and they all want to make a legacy for themselves. The way yju do this in the old days is by being really good at war and also social climbing by marrying into money and fame. Alex has none of that yet and since Burr's parents died, he only has the legacy of his parents and a trustfund, but not personal status. But since he is so very cautious, people are forgetting the Burr name because he doesn't do anything with it himself as he is endlessly waiting for the opportune time. By the time he states his case to George Washington, his namebrand holds no sway, made worse because Washington was not the type of guy to value namesake nepotism (Lee) and instead on people of action (Hamilton). Alex and Burr basically belonged to the same social club and tolerated each other but have very different views. They are friends of each other's friends so they keep on meeting by proxy.

Burr and Alexander have a very complicated relationship as you'll see develop throughout the musical. They're both very intellectual men with a lot to prove and vaguely similar goals at many times. They respect each other in ways, but they are also rivals. Like any good rival relationship, it's full of moments of friendliness and animosity.

Lin-Manuel has said that Helpless is a kind of cross between Destiny's Child and an Ashanti/Ja Rule Song. And Satisfied is just a huge surprise, with the rewind and a masterclass in performance. Angelica is the smartest character in the show, instantly sizing up Hamilton and stepping aside for her sister. The orchestrator of Hamilton, Alex Lacamoire is ridiculously talented, and also orchestrated and created the harmonies for Dear Evan Hansen and In the Heights.

Musical reaction tip- try to pay attention to the lyrics more than the composing. You're losing parts of the story because you get distracted by the build of the sound. Which I know is what you're trained to do but as a viewer it gets frustrating when you ask questions that have already been answered in the lyrics because you're not paying attention. I love your input on the songs as a composer though. I'm learning so much on that side of the music.

You need to listen to Les Miserables for multiple motifs… seeing as that was one of the inspirations for Hamilton (not the film where they butchered the music, the 10th or 25th anniversary concerts).

Burr and Hamilton did start off as friends. But they just never shared the same philosophy. Hamilton believed in openly speaking his mind and taking a stand on issues, whereas Burr kept his thoughts to himself and didn't take a stand on anything, believing that was the better way to survive and get ahead. And while Hamilton took big risks and became successful, Burr's career stalled, which made him resent Hamilton. Also, historically, Hamilton was described as obnoxious, arrogant, smug, a loudmouth--but he was also a genius. You brought up Amadeus before. That movie is told from the point of view of Salieri, who was friends with Mozart and admired him, but he was also extremely jealous of his genius and talent, and he hated him for always being better than him. Same dynamic between Burr and Hamilton.

That's...not exactly the kind of "satisfied" he's talking about. It's more like being satisfied with the way your life is. Hamilton is poor and stuck writing for Washington when he wants to be fighting. Angelica is a woman in a world where women are looked at as insane or just plain strange if they are an intellectual. Like what she said in the song Schuyler Sisters: "I've been reading Common Sense by Thomas Paine. So men say that I'm intense or I'm insane." In that day and age, women don't read, or if they do, they read light things like romance stories. They don't read philosophical pamphlets from Revolutionaries. So, they're both unsatisfied.
