Good lord this was so good. I still have my Media Play hard copy from 25 years ago haha. Great content as always. The anime industry is almost entirely soulless perpetual single season projects about the occult that nobody remembers the second they end. But people still talk about these masterclasses decades later.

I was at the Naval Academy minoring in Japanese in 2001 and got a digital copy of this in Japanese (four video files). I was only just starting my studies but I understood well enough the story and damn the thing is just so captivating. One of the most gorgeous themes ever- that melody (as they're walking to town). Later when the dvd came out in the states I got a copy and finally figured out the subtleties of the plot.

First saw it on 2004 as a 14 year old. I was obsessed with Kenshin, still sm. But remember it being a Google search and seeing Kenshin with tomoe. That took me on a journey I was not ready for. Had not idea Trust & Betrayal was so dark. Not to mention I got the directors cut at my local Hastings. Then the utter disappointment in reflections. But that's a story for another time.

This really was such a good adaptation. I was so happy that they put that cool peak at young shishio at the end where he kills that one dude. Was worried they wouldn't add that from the manga. Granted it was a little different I'm the manga they were on a mountain road and here it was a small town but hey I'll take it!

this will always be my favorite piece of media ever. it's so near and dear to my heart and always will be. I watched this before I even knew about rurouni kenshin forever ago and I can attest it doesn't ruin the series at all. it actually made it better for me knowing that little piece of info looming over the goofy overtones of the series........... also I actually loved the ending to samurai x reflections :/ "welcome home shinta" brings me just as much PTSD tears as the meruem x komugi scene :/ ugh

I really appreciate your Kenshin coverage. Couldn’t agree more about Samurai X Trust and Betrayal being a masterpiece. I can’t remember if I saw this before or during my initial watch of the 90s Kenshin anime. I recently picked up Aniplex’s Japan Blu Ray release of Tsuioku-hen. It wasn’t cheap but it’s region-free and the beautiful HD video and sound quality is a real treat. Really decent English subtitles as well.

There's something I've thought about for a while in regards to this OVA. It is an absolute masterpiece of storytelling for sure but because it's nature feels so drastically different from the main story,people who experience anything kenshin related for the first time through this OVA might feel disappointment or even straight up hate for the main story of rurouni kenshin because of how different it is. In the manga the purpose of this backstory was to serve as the payoff to kenshin's past sins that were foreshadowed and bulit-up over many chapters where by this point we know who present day kenshin is and what his story is about. But someone who experiences kenshin for the first time through this OVA might get the idea that kenshin is a character who is meant to die a tragic death and probably never be happy because of how dark the OVA is in comparison to the manga. So when they see in the main story this"tragic,never again to be happy character"as someone who has moments of happiness and a place to belong instead gives the impression that the story was never meant to have a tragic ending for kenshin even though that IS the point. The fact that so many people feel that way about the main story in comparison to the OVA is disappointing. It makes this OVA give off the wrong message for the audience due to it being a self-contained story instead of being a part of the main anime series for anime-onlys. The purpose of this backstory is to see where kenshin started from and now in present day we can see how he has finally found happiness and forgiveness,but someone who experiences kenshin for the first time through this OVA without the context of the main story and who kenshin is in the present day,it makes said person get the wrong idea of what the series is truly about at it's core:"That in spite of what you've gone through and what you've done,you have to keep on living". There is no light without darkness in this story,but when you only show the darkness part of the story without knowing what the light was about(the light being kenshin finding friends and a second love through kaoru)leads to misconception and underapprection of what kenshin's story is about. Sorry if my comment might have come off as confusing or out of nowhere. It's just something that's been in my mind recently. My rant aside though,this was another great video from you. Here's hoping season 2 of the reboot meets our expectations(and please for the love of God liden studios bring back the OG ost or at least a remixed version of it)

I remember being confused back in the day as to the watching order and timeline of all the various versions. But I'd only watched Trust and Betrayal after watching various episodes of the anime out of order. So it didn't make sense until I went and watched the whole anime and then T&B many years later. The tone is shockingly different as I can't remember any moments of levity besides the time Kenshin spent with Tomoe. But it worked for me as I was more tuned into the seriousness of the anime.

Rurouni Kenshin Tsuioku-hen is the best OVA I've ever watched. I love the art direction, animation, music and story. I wish the entire series was done in this style. xD I even love that Watsuki payed a tribute to Okita Souji, the 17 year old Shinsengumi prodigy who died too young from tuberculosis. I wish we had a new Rurouni Kenshin competitive fighting game with all these amazing characters. Also you should do Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido arc reviews.

As someone who saw this first it is definitely something you'll appreciate on a rewatch also I am very curious about about how the new anime will adapt this arc. also IMO this arc seems to have directly inspired Hiroyuki Takei the Author of Shaman king who also inserted the MCs backstory in the middle of the story.
@stomper1716 Жыл бұрын
Shaman king in general bears many similarities to Kenshin since Watsuki heavily mentored him such as a MC who seeks peace and non-violent solutions but is forced into conflict (Yoh is one of the most unique shounen protagonists I've seen and a personal favourite)

I watched most of the main show before getting the OVA. Absolutely loved it. Much more intense and emotionally moving. I am planning to re-watch the main series and I expect that I will continue to enjoy both, just for different reasons. Sometimes a little light heartedness is what I'm in the mood for, while still having the redemption arc and grittyness of the OVA bubbling around in the back of my head.

For me Tsuioku-hen is the best OVA series ever made. It does more in 4 episodes, or 2 hours, than 99% of anime. I genuinely put it alongside Eva, FLCL, Berserk and Ghibli films at the pinnacle of what can be achieved in the medium. There are so many iconic moments in it's short runtime and despite that it never feels rushed, everything and everyone is given space to breathe and that allows the audience to adapt to it's epic but deeply melancholic tone. The soundtrack is spectacular too, it's the anime equivalent to The Godfather soundtrack. Regardless of how many years it's been the moment you hear it again your mind will be flooded with scenes from the OVA.

As a fan of kenshin. I can say that this was a masterpiece of anime. My favorite line of the movie is when kashura say. The hitten style should have been used to defend the new world. Not to destroy the old one. That line has been stuck with me for many years. It shows the true purpose of martial arts. Which is to stop violence not making war.

This Jinchu prequel storyline is and will always be a greatest adaptation both as an OVA and the live action movie because it’s serious, mature, has a limited amount of characters which means it’s more character-focused than the other part of the story and only consist of 14 chapters in the manga which makes it the easiest part to adapt. And it can’t help that the music in the OVA is top notch too. Now, the interesting part is the rest of Jinchu storyline because my god, the live action adaptation of that part is awful and I don’t think the new anime adaptation will do it well either because Enishi is such a goofy villain.

The single best anime OVA in history. It was perfect for its time. Personally I'd put it on the same tier as Attack on Titan, FMAB, Steins Gate if not above. It was not a shounen but a serious movie targetted at adult audience.

You missed one more "Samurai X" -- the Sony dub, which is the dubbed used on Hulu. In a lot of countries, the Sony dub aired under the title "Samurai X" which uses the same general pool of voice actors as the Media Blasters dub but have many of the VAs switched around except for ironically Kenshin and Megumi. In addition, three out of the four main character's names changed for some reason (possibly for legal reasons), which is where the names "Kenshee", "Cori", and "Yoshi" come from.

I saw Trust and Betrayal with no familiarity of the original anime or manga and it just blew me away with how adult, tragic and fatalistic it was. Add to it a wonderful choreography and authentic-feeling combat scenes which are perfect depictions of violence and you have a classic of the genre like few others. That being said since my expectations were built in accord with this wonderful miniseries, I was sorely let down by the rest of the IP which hit me as very childish and overly silly. This OVA will however stay in my pantheon of "samurai" properties along with Ghost of Tsushima and many Kurosawa films. Oh and the way Kenshin kills in this really reminded me of The Sword of Doom. Quick and absolutely ruthless.
