I had a female co-worker who loved Kenshin. I hated shonen @ the time 2018. I was 20. When i turned 21 i was unemployed & depressed & felt lost with no purpose. I found this series on Netflix it changed me. One day i worked in the woods doing landscaping. I made $20. I spent the last 6 on the first 3 in 1 volume of Kenshin. Changed my life & i felt that i knew the kind of man i wanted to be. 2 years later i feel more like early Gintoki. But i still hold kenshin close to my heart.

Great review! The only thing missing is just how well Watsuki subtly portrayed PTSD within Kenshin. The author never comes out and bluntly says it, but he shows Kenshin going through it. One of the strengths of comic/manga story telling versus novel story telling. You did talk about the ultiment moral of the whole story, the fact that you are more valuable to the world by staying alive and try to do good than to let yourself die in remorse. I would recommend this menga to anyone dealing with PTSD.

I know this was posted a year ago already, but the trailer for the new RK series just made me come back to this masterpiece. When I first encountered the Jinchuu arc, it totally left a mark on me and in my life from then on. I just want to appreciate how this series dealt with depression, and how Kenshin conquered it in his own time, and the importance of his will to live. Also, it's necessary to point out that the very same answer Kenshin found was the exact one he taught and saved Megumi with in the 1st arc. The way he told her that in the anime left an impact on me as a kid, and it made me love this series more when they revisited that moral. It's just very realistic in my part because sometimes, you already know the answer in words, but your heart doesn't yet. I realized the same thing when I myself experienced depression. I was too optimistic so much on things I don't understand yet, and only then I truly understood their meaning, when I finally learned how put those words into action. " "You can't bring back the people you've killed at your own deathbed. Rather than that, a single person wielding a sword for many... that is the true meaning of atonement" - Rurouni Kenshin Chapter 29. Kenshin taught me to have courage no matter how hard life is. We all make mistakes, but it doesn't mean we can't change and make this world a better place. When I finished the manga, I just cried and all I can say is "wow." It made me realize that life is like a tunnel, there would be a time where it really is dark, but if we keep moving forward like Kenshin does no matter what, we can see the light that is waiting for us. Thank you for pointing this out. Rurouni Kenshin is just often dismissed as simply just a classic and people didn't actually know how amazing and motivating this series truly is. Thank you.

Rurouni Kenshin was and still is my absolute favorite anime and manga series of all time. All the things you said about growing up and not having friends and people to look up to so Kenshin Himura became someone to look up to and a friend was the same thing for me. In fact I fell in love with Kenshin and Japan and its culture and history and especially the samurai history through Rurouni Kenshin. I also have been writing my own samurai manga series as a thank you to Watsuki sensei and especially to Kenshin, Kaoru, Yahiko and Sanosuke and all the other great characters. I hope my story can live up all the feelings Kenshin gave me.

"Living on even when it hurts so much, because you can only do good/better when you're alive" That's probably the most striking message this series has. Kenshin could've gone the easy way and ended himself when realizing all the suffering he had caused. But instead he lived on in a lifelong attempt to atone for his sins. THAT was the real strenght of his character.

Oh, man, I LOVED Kenshin back when I was a teenager as well. My personal favorite was the Jinchuu arc (which is the only one I physically own). I loved the exploration into Kenshin's backstory and fell pretty hard for Tomoe. Every time I reread the manda, or rewatch the OVA I keep hopin that this time Kenshin will make it in time.

I love RK! Since the first moment I laid eyes on the series back when I was a 9-year-old girl, I just felt completely in love with the story, and as I grew older, I came to really understand and appreciate all the complex thematics and morals that lay underneath. I'm now 31 years old and I reread the manga every year! It is my favorite story and every time I read it I find some new little detail about it. Jinchuu is my favorite Arc, as it is more character-driven and we get to see for ourselves Kenshin's true struggle, feelings, and fears.

I share a similar view on fictional characters of fiction overall and never understood people who downgrade the importance of such role models. On emotional level, our brains don't see much difference anyway. We may understand that stories which we read about/watch did not happen and our favourite characters never existed, but on emotional level we can't differentiate. Which is why people cry on movies, get heavily engaged into the plot etc. It's like experiencing a life of someone else and thus gaining emotional experience from it.

I absolutely love Rurouni Kenshin so much that he was a major inspiration for a story I’m writing (I’m an aspiring comic book/manga artist and writer). I actually watched Trust & Betrayal first thanks to an AMV with one of my favorite songs. Then I went from there.

15:44 I just want to say that a story like this is pretty much timeless. People have pasts and inner demons that they deal with in any generation, and the types of stories that are told in this manga are very essential for helping somebody work out the things that torment them. Also, Sano’s past and meaning in the story was so undermined in the Live Action. It’s a lot to flesh out, but I think they did him dirty in the movies :/
