Thanks for going more into it. I see many KZbinrs that review this movie stay in the shock value and bait gore side of the story. I took the story as a very dramatic and sad warning about a society that forgets children in any culture. Plus, I remember listening to an interview with the director where she very lucidly explained how he was aiming at portraying a Japan that most media in general and anime, in particular, try to disappear under that veil of progress. He even mentioned how his movie was a desire to do the opposite of what for example Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyasaki were doing.

I think your take on how the circus performers don't realize how much their trauma wears on others because they've normalized it rings quite true. They don't even consider they've done anything wrong and can still wish Midori well at the same time. I'm not really considering watching the movie given the material, but I enjoy the takeaways and analysis of the producer's motive.

One of the things I see in it is that is doesn’t moralize it’s story, it shows grotesque things but doesn’t really pass judgment on them. It tells a situation, a slice of life for certain people in a certain time and is a brash reminder of how different humans are. It shows the bad sides of the troops and the more friendly sides. Because they like everyone are a product of their upbringing and the film highlights the disparity in social situations that exist, and existed especially back in the time it’s set in. And of course the theme that’s present in so much anime- that all you can do is stand up tall and try and move on to survive. And just how hard that can be.

And I’m a fan of stuff as depressing as Once Were Warriors and Now and Then Here and There

You are right I think about the circus freaks. If you only know abuse, isolation and ridicule then you see that as the normal way of behaving. So the freaks don't even think they did something bad to Midori; they thought of their actions as normal. This is why they wish her well in the end as if nothing happened. Also I didn't get the ending. Maybe she thought the magician abandoned her so now in her mind everyone treated her badly and she feels abandoned once again: so we see the freaks laughing at her; what we see is the imagery of her mental state. Finally, I think the poems at the beginning and the fact that the movie is divided into acts have a meaning but I didn't stay to analyze. (I watched the movie 15 or 20 minutes ago - 18th of January, Thursday, 5:31 am as of now)

Yours is probably one of the only KZbin reviews that doesn't just shit on it. Maybe I'm desensitized, but this movie didn't affect me as much as I thought it would. Maybe it will to people who have children. Maybe the movie is telling the audience to treat people better; be more charitable, so nobody ends up like Midori. I recommend watching his other films sometime: Limitless Paradise (1981) The Death Lullaby (1985) My Love (1994, seizure warning) Horizon Blue (2019, currently only viewable at select film screenings without subtitles)

I watched this movie a couple years ago and saw it was supposed to be much more deranged than the anime Kite. After taking the time to watch this... i can say that, yes, it is much worse than Kite 😱. It makes sense how you are saying this story is nowhere near for the faint of heart because of what the story entails. It may be balls to the walls crazy how the plot is grotesque and has depicting animation, but it has something alot of other movies nowadays don't have which I feel is the way this movie brings you to that sinking feeling of how awful some people in this world treat others less than them. For the main girl, it may seem too extreme to base this on someone this young but in reality that's what is happening to many of our young generation and we need to open our eyes when someone is being treated cruelly to either step in or how to get them out of those terrible environments.
