let me explain about his shikai and bankai the shikai which uses multiple children games to defeat his opponent and the game he played is somewhat like red light and green light from squid game and his Bankai is stage play for adults, so there can also be multiple plays that he can do. So much range for his Bankai Let me explain the plot that shunsui's bankai: The play shunsui is telling is a suicide story of a couple, a man and a woman where Lillie Barro is the man, Shunsui is the woman. In Act 1: because the man hit the woman, he feels great shame as if the wounds he inflicted he can also feel them . Act 2: the man starts feeling even worse for what he did and develops a sickness because of this great shame. Act 3: as a way to atone the man drops into an endless ocean hoping to drown and the woman also drowns with him because she pities him. However, the man becomes a coward, starting to swim up to the surface abandoning his promise to drown along with the woman. Act 4: As a result of all this, the woman wanting to get rid of the man's regret and cowardness, cuts his throat. And when you are at it the VA of ukitake and itachi are same.

This is all implied by the names of the bankai and its acts, which were not translated in anime subtitles for some reason, possibly because they're fairly abstract. IIRC it was clearer in Shunsui's manga dialogue than in the anime as well. Love how theatrical it is.

You nailed it with your description of Shunsui, personality wise he is one of the most complex and interesting characters to analyze, crazy how he actually hates fighting yet he is so strong and proficient in combat when duty forces him to engage in battle. Kubo early description on him mentions that he hated shinigami arts and was forced to enter the academy, and out of thousands of shinigami, he ends up becoming not only a Captain, but also Head Captain, without even want it, just with raw talent, he is an underrated genius. (Cut the throat with a thread-cutting scissors and stain it with blood.) When Shunsui said he hopes that Nanao doesn't get dragged into it, he was referring to the area of effect closest to his Bankai, knowing she was intent on returning to him. In the battle with Starkk, Ukitake reminds Kyoraku that he musten use his Bankai around the rest of the Gotei 13. He mentions in this episode that he had effectively lured Lille to the place where they had first arrived, far away from his allies. The manga did more to show how all of the other characters were experiencing his Bankai from afar.

Anyways, Reikaku = Spirit Sense And the ‘Dharma Doll Fell Down/Bodhidharma Falls Down’ that Lilie Barro recognized as ‘chocolate ingles’ from Spain are both similar, if not identical to Red-Light, Green-Light as a children’s game, which is the gist of Shunsui’s Shikai abilities and like all Bankais, his is the adult/inverse version of that spiritual power. The Theatrical Bankai: KatenKyōkotsu Karamatsu Shinjū (Bones of Heavenly Blooming Madness: Withering Pine Lovers' Suicide/ Flower Crazed Heaven Bone Spirit Withered Pine Love Suicide) To release, Shunsui holds his Shikai out in front of him with the blades pointing down, which prompts several black tendrils to extend out from him like shadows (resembling ink-drawn pine branches) while his Zanpakutō Spirit, Katen or ‘Ohana’ manifests behind him who was revealed along with most other Zanpakutō Spirits in the anime canon Zanpakutō Rebellion arc (Eps 230 - 265) A vast area around Shunsui is subsequently overcast by an aura that alters the perception of those it reaches, making their surroundings appear ‘gloomy, desolate, and full of despair’ while inducing chills, and making the sky appear as if covered in eerie yellow squares, like the paneling of a theater stage, and much like Yamamoto’s Bankai with its 4 directional phases, Shunsui’s is divided into 4 acts of an adult tragic play. Act 1: ‘Hesitance and Apportionment of Wounds’ - A man hits a woman, he feels great shame as if the wounds he inflicted he can also feel them, and it becomes real damage, from mental to physical. In context, Any wounds that Shunsui or his opponent inflict on each other will emerge on their body as well, shareing the pain. In context, black spots appear all over the body of Shunsui's opponent, causing them to bleed profusely. Act 3: ‘The Severing Abyss’ - As a way to atone the man drops into an endless ocean hoping to drown and the woman also drowns with him because she pities him. However, the man becomes a coward, starting to swim up to the surface abandoning his promise to drown along with the woman. In context, Shunsui and his opponent are engulfed in a massive, inescapable body of water, which both are meant to remain in until one of them runs out of Reiatsu and drowns. Final Act: ‘Thread-Cutting Scissors upon a Blood-Streaked Throat’ - As a result of all this, the woman wanting to get rid of the man's regret and cowardness, cuts his throat. In context, After sheathing his swords, Shunsui winds a white thread around his opponent's throat multiple times before pulling it out, leaving a deep cut in their throat that expands before blowing up their head. As for Lille Barro’s transformation, it’s his Vollständig/Voll Stern dich: Ziliel which is based on a biblically accurate angel as he’s the first Quincy to be granted a Schrift by Yhwach as the ‘closest to God’ and has power over light itself.

Shikai: Child's play Bankai: Adult's play Shunsui’s Bankai is portrayed as a stage play called "The Tragic Love of Two Lovers." In the first act, the damage is equally divided, symbolizing the sorrow of the couple who cannot be together. In the second act, a virus breaks out, representing the male protagonist’s long-lasting sorrow and terminal illness. In the third act, both characters reduce their spiritual pressure together, symbolizing the lovers’ pact to die together (“sinju” in Japanese that specifically refers to lovers' suicides). In the fourth act, a clean break occurs, symbolizing the male protagonist’s regret halfway through his suicide, and the female protagonist kills him with her own hands. In the manga they explain that Hana means flower and the letter "O" is an Edo-era honorific that was placed before women's names. Also, the zanpakuto designs from the Rebellion Zanpakuto filler arc were supervised by Kubo Sensei himself, so only the zanpakuto designs from that arc are canon.

But where was Shunsui other Zanpakuto's soul a ninja girl who always was with Ohana? The last time I saw her was in the Zanpakuto Rebellion arc and I was so surprised to see her make a return since I thought she was just anime canon. It still leads to some continuity errors but its still fun to see. I don't think he recognized her "human form" in the rebellion arc, but I could be wrong.

Katen, his bankai sword name, tells a theatrical play and brings it into reality. I think it's safe to assume there are many theatrical plays just like his Shikai has many children's games. In this specific theatrical play, if you don't beat Kyoraku before act 4, it looks like you're pretty much done for. Power Bankai, suitable for Captain Commander.

I think I understand what do you mean with that "happy-sad" vibe of Shunsui's personality. If I remember correctly in Korea they have a word 'han' for it which describes the feeling kind of like nostalgia but mixed with a sadness.

Shunsui’s Bankai explained: In Act 1: Because the man hit the woman, he feels great shame as if the wounds he inflicted he can also feel them (and it becomes real damage). Act 2: the man starts feeling even worse for what he did and develops a sickness because of this great shame. Act 3: as a way to atone the man drops into an endless ocean hoping to drown and the woman also drowns with him because she pities him. However, the man becomes a coward, starting to swim up to the surface abandoning his promise to drown along with the woman. Act 4: As a result of all this, the woman wanting to get rid of the man's regret and cowardness, cuts his throat. His Shikai is children games (reflects his outward calm, playful, chill personality) and his Bankai is an adult theater play (that reflects his more dark, sinister personality underneath) I really dig it.. and his Shikai is pretty broken because he can just stack games on top of games and can just confuse his enemy etc. Kubo also explained in a Q&A that Shunsui can do other acts or plays, much like his Shikai can do other various children games.

I was 50/50 on the CG hand, there were a few spots where it was VERY goofy and taking me out of it, specifically when it was standing up for the first time and whenever it was being very expressive moving back and forth, but the rest of the time I either didn't mind or even enjoyed it. Also, we do see one other zanpakutou manifest twice during the soul society arc, Zabimaru first shows up to talk to Renji when he lost to Ichigo and was handcuffed in the infirmary for challenging and losing to the ryoka alone before he breaks out and then a second time when he finds Ichigo doing his bankai training and he shows that he already can manifest his zanpakutou because he already knows bankai himself, but back then Zabimaru was a white furred baboon with a snake tail, which in my opinion was a million times cooler that the goofy hairy lady and bratty snake kid chained together. I wish we got to see more of them, especially with unique and cool designs like Zabimaru before the zanpakutou rebellion filler arc
