Wrestling Empire is a game that portrays the sport that it's representing accurately. You have to negotiate contracts when signing with promotions, often times getting screwed over or forced to do something you don't want to do, there's separate relationship meters for characters in ring and IRL, you get offered drugs and can do them or not, and characters actually die - either through old age, drug abuse, or another character murdering them. Matches can get so violent that people's limbs fly off and they can die as a result. It's an indie game made by 1 guy (MDickie) who made similar games such as prison simulator Hard Times and Jesus simulator The You Testament, and it's available on PC, Mobile and Nintendo Switch.

Tabletop RPG wrestling games also track double roles sometimes. In World Wide Wrestling you have both your kayfabe persona and the drama with other wrestlers, and the real drama behind it all. We had one NPC wrestler who wanted to keep it quiet that he was family of the league owner. But one PC wrestler decided to talk smack about that on tv. Hitting eachother with chairs in kayfabe is okay... But that was mean.

There was a flash game we all used to plain in school called "Jumpers for goalposts" and it was a football game about your character starting from playing in the streets, playing for local teams all the way up to choosing which team to sign for. It had options for your character to do between games like attending training, going to charity events or just getting drunk. These options changed the way your team was perceived and it effected stats and the way the story played out. For a silly flash game it had a lot of drama.

New Star Soccer is arguably the spiritual sequel to this really, and then some however it misses the mark and takes several aspects away. JFG was awesome, the JFG 90s one they did was great, but the original JfG is where it's at. I'd love someone to do a career mode on it. THe GOAL letters and seeing the keeper stumped always made me laugh, and the starting in the streets with a chalk goal and some random ass kid in goal is where it's at, too come to think of it, just a brick wall with a goal on it in chalk and some kids kicking a football around. I can actually relate with this. I'm a wrestling fan and the wrestling industry is brutal. But my gripes with the WWE 2K games is that they glorify professional wrestling a bit too much. A very big chunk of the storylines in wrestling is influenced by the real life issues that happen in the industry. Hell the biggest storyline going on rn is due to that. But the 2k games don't acknowledge that. I played Wrestling Revolution 3D and eventually played Wrestling Empire and I can say that where Blitz League failed, Wrestling Empire succeeded. The very first dialogue that happens when you start career mode is your coach telling you the harsh realities of the industry. Wrestlers get injured, you can get injured, it could be a career ending injury or a life ending one. People die in the ring, you may enter a controversy for being irresponsible for injuring a wrestler, you can enter actual beefs, not just storyline one, you enter the open world and you're fully responsible for everything that happens to you, you have to workout to keep in shape, you have to be over with your fans if you want to get a contract signing or even have more opportunities. And it's not just career mode. In another mode, you play as the booker of a wrestling company and it's just as brutal. Keep your employees happy, book them properly or else they will become irrelevant quickly, your champion has to be over with your fans to keep the ratings high, the game has a territory system that is way similar to how wrestling was in the 90s. Wrestling Empire Empire may be a random ass game but dude when it comes to authenticity it nails it.

Putting controversial or mature content in a sports game is fine if it adds an interesting wrinkle mechanically and, this is important, has a *benefit* that would make the player want to risk the negative consequences to go for it. A good example is the MLB Slugfest games. In that series there’s a mechanic where you can choose to hit a batter, and it will *usually* cause their power-swing and speed stats to go down for the rest of the game. But there’s also a small chance that either a) they get so angry that they charge the mound, which lowers your pitcher’s stat, or b) the batter’s power will go UP by a huge amount. And that second scenario is guaranteed to happen if you keep hitting the same batter multiple times.
@nicholasbuffone1752 ай бұрын
I personally have a big soft spot for Blitz: The League, but yeah, this is something it struggles with considerably in places. Some of the in-game steroids DO give your players a greater risk of injury (and/or lower another vague rating called "Field Awareness" that literally doesn't get mentioned anywhere else in the game), and there's a chance you'll be hit with a fine if you're caught with your hands in the cookie jar... but that risk/reward rarely matters when there's so little incentive to stick your hand in that jar in the first place: even the mildest steroids are so overpriced --- exacerbated by their short duration, with each purchased buff wearing off after only three games --- that unless you have cash to burn, you're ironically better off just investing in better training equipment and letting your players acquire permanent ratings upgrades au naturel. I replayed the game recently, as it so happens, and while I absolutely had loads of fun with it overall, the only times I ever used the steroids mechanic were when one of my players got a multi-game injury and I used a "accelerate their recovery" boost so their return date would sync up with the rest of the team's training cycles. As a consequence, it's reduced to another way in which The League subjectively falls short of its secondary goal of making the player establish a full-fledged dialogue with these sordid aspects of the sport; if anything, you could even argue it inadvertently encourages them to look away by diverting their attention towards other, coincidentally more "morally acceptable" practices. "Winners don't do drugs" indeed, I suppose. :P (Keep in mind that I'm mostly just spitballing and may have zero idea what I'm talking about.)

I'm sure there are very few people out there that care less for sports than I do, but you somehow got me opening up another tab to start watching Playmakers with how you presented it. As for Blitz: The League, I feel like the only way we'd ever get a game like this nowadays would be from an indie studio. As you mention at the end of the video, corporations would keep things too safe to try anything like it again, but letting a smaller studio who could correctly identify the kind of nuance and authenticity the real drama of sports causes could lead to less overhead from higher ups. At this point, however, I think said studio would just have to make up their own sport so leagues don't try and strike them down.

Nowadays I only watch videos where I know what I’m getting. Even then, I go through what’s available in my subscriptions and recommendations, and pick a couple, then go back and watch them. See, I was doing just that when I stumbled upon this video and, to be honest, I had no idea what it was about based on the title or the thumbnail, but something told me - “stop whatever it is you’re doing and just watch this one.” So I did, and I’m really happy, because this was very interesting and overall just a great video

I've had this idea over the last 5 years that Rockstar and 2k should just swallow their pride and make the most authentic football game to ever exist. One that stays true to how football is played but also brings in the reality of off the field relationships and drama. One that could be built into the GTA world but still stay authentic to what the sport truly is without going to the extremes blitz did. I could rant about it for hours and show off my notebook of gameplay ideas but I feel you so much on this, you have no idea @raycevick how badly I want this. Lol, love the content as always.

Football Manager 2024 my guy. Even if you don’t like football/soccer, it’s the absolute pinnacle of serious sports games with depth and storylines etc. The next title is gonna have an engine upgrade so when that comes out it might be a good time to try it
@gil43352 ай бұрын
i had a great idea half way this video. football manager, but with racing. (theres probably a game like this already and im just dumb) you have to manage a racing team in F1 or some other racing division. you would have to hire drivers, decide how to tune your cars, choose what races to participate in, manage your pit stop crew and assign each of them to what they do best (tire changing; re-fueling, etc). i would play that

3:05 "So this is it. This what we're going to get. Every year, and everything, forever." I look at just about every genre of video games I'm interested in and this is exactly what I feel inside. Sports games, multiplayer shooters, platformers, you name it. Indies ARE great, but every time I start to get deeply invested, the limitations of the dev team and their resources becomes clear. Blitz: The League isn't just remarkable for its own ideas, it's retrospectively remarkable in how many other games of its era are like it; Quality games that do something different and actually have a BUDGET (I'm thinking of the NFL/NBA Street games and Downhill Domination to name a few). I seriously can't believe that Shigeru Miyamoto doesn't have a single new idea for Formula Zero or something wild like a new Kirby sports game. For as much as Valve has contributed to the games industry, I can't help but feel with each coming year that adding hats to Team Fortress has set the industry back by decades. Just as Valve inspired the industry to be the best in can be in the late 90s-early 00s, Valve has inspired the industry to be the laziest and safest it can be today. This is a problem far bigger than games and art, it's a problem affecting all of us in just about every way today.

I feel like way too many people have a weird idea about what constitutes as an indie game and that really holds people back from enjoying shit.
@FreshTillDeath562 ай бұрын
@@Rad-Dude63andathird For sure. You shouldn't be afraid to try anything. An idea is an idea, and sometimes, a fresh idea is more than enough to make up for the size and capability of your development studio.

When I saw that your new video is about Blitz, I really wouldn´t have thought you´d manage to name-drop the sociopathic duo of Nicole and Jecka. Still, if you really think about it they could make fun of people playing Blitz in their game and it would all come around in a cosmic sense.

The problem with pro sports games trying to be authentic is that the life of a professional athlete is insanely monotone. An authentic sports game would have you spend at least 90% of the time on the training field or in the gym or in the fields or wherever the athletes hone their skills. An authentic sports game would be a grind fest like we’ve never seen before

Great video. I wonder how much Blitz 1 suffered from the mid-aughts attempt at making something 'real'. I know we've been chasing the high of a game that feels real but it almost reminds me of STALKER in a way, strangely enough. Or maybe half of ARMA. A genuine attempt at something that feels real, but ends up being held back by that hold on realism. Certainly the x-ray injuries aren't completely real, but by holding to that idea they're setting a certain tone and it shows in Blitz 2 how well that wouldn't go with trying to be serious. Something I need to think on more.

I think a big problem is that games try way too hard to seem mature rather then actually being mature. Because theres nothing more immature then someone trying to act mature. Making the MDickie comparison because everyone else is. The choice to take steriods in that game. It's presented as a stat boost in exchange for money. But theres more to it then that. Building stats can be a long process as it costs health, training one stat can decrese another even without gains, and those gains can be lost during matches. Steriods skip that. And on the other hand, there's no real penalty for taking steriods outside of a small lost of popularity, and maybe a reference to it before your match. It doesn't impact future career prospects, and its quickly forgotten. A lot like real life steriod scandals. Its not presented as a make or break, one off story. But a fact of life. But there is another wrestling game that goes even further. Total Extreme Wrestling, this is a booking simulator that allows you to provide a dirty doctor backstage for your talent to buy drugs from, you can ask wrestlers to get on steriods making them more marketable, and you can ignore instances of stars failing drug tests. And while the consequences can be more dire, it again doesn't make a big deal out of the choices. They are presented the same way as wrestler showing up late, or passing on knowledge to a youngster.
